Dr Raj Kumar’s Top-10 Films
MADAN KUMAR writes: If one were to look at the kind of Hindi films that are promoted and hyped, virtually every one of Dr Raj Kumar's films would easily rank as a classic, rendering a top-10 list redundant.
Still, if a very focussed attempt were to be made to zero in on Dr Raj's top-10 films, this is how my list would read, not necessarily in the same order:
1) Kasturi Nivasa
2) Bangarada Manushya
3) Mayura
4) Kaviratna Kalidasa
5) Sanadi Appanna
6) Babruvahana
7) Bhakta Kumbara
Gandhada Gudi
9) Naa Ninna Mareyalaare
10) Shankar Guru

i do agree, every film of dr raj were different, unique and always had a social message. i liked all his films, i love him in saksathkara, nandi,satya harischandra, bhaktaprahlada, bahaddur gandu, sampattige saval, jeevana chiatra along with all his old films, he has played a role in every human’s character

Great list. I would like to include the following in the top-10 list:
Mantralaya Mahatme
Sakshatkara
instead of: Naa Ninna Mareyalaare and Shankar Guru…
By the way, Mantralaya Mahatme was a personal favorite of Dr. Rajkumar as well. I read about it in an interview. His two songs from Mantralaya Mahatme are immortal:

Of course, Sakshatkara was one of the most emotional classics - typical of the great Puttanna Kanagal.
May the great soul rest in peace I am no mood to work today. In fact, I broke down while having food. It is a personal loss to me. I had seen him in my dream just a day ago. It was funny. He was with me in the dream, I saw him and try to pull his leg by singing “Aakasha Kelageke Bantu…” Then he asked me: “Now tell me in which movie this song is featured?” I was not sure. I replied: “Kamana Billu”… Wrong answer. Then I thought and thought and thought and finally said: “Samayada Gombe!” The answer was right but Dr. Raj was not there. It was morning already and I just woke up to realize it was all a dream.
I miss you dear Raj. You will live for ever!

I enjoyed the pair of Rajkumar & Narasimha Raju and also Balakrishna. The comedy was so natural & It always feels refreshing.
No other language might have people still enjoying the Black & white movies as in Kannada.
Though its a sad day, but I am seeing hope that Kannadigas are awakening…..

As long as Mayura is on the list, I dont care what other movies make it to the list. My top 10 aNNavru’s movies would have Mayura 1-10. Sanadi Appanna would be 11.
Cant imagine any other actor in the world playing that role. None! Infact, the same can be said of most if not all of aNNa’s movies.

i bought the movie’s vcd:”Bangaarada Manusya”
however,the vcd has no english subtitle, i don’t learn the language “Kannada”…….what’s a pity!!
can any friends here offer the movie’s english subtitle for me????

All 206 movies of Dr Raj is great. Each and every movies gives moral to adopt in our life.
If Bangarda manusya is watched, inner goodness of every man will come out. We will feel to be good for family and others. Lazyness is destroyed.
Bhakta kumbara… says how should we follow bhakti maarga.
Bhagyavantar, Halujenu……says how should we love our wife
Badavara bhandu……..says how should i love my father
So there is no end….infinity.

mayor muthanna, naandi, haalu jenu, saakshatkara,these are exeptional movies raja nanna raja, badavara bandhu, devatha manushya are movies which cannot be forgotten forever, would you beleive that raj kumars influence on chi. udayashankar forced him to pen the evergreen numbers such as halliyaader eanu shiva, baanigondu elle yellide, koodi baalonavinnendu seri dudiyona, maanavanaguveya illa danavanaguveya nee maanava kulake mullaguveya. imagine if these two people had been healthy for atleast a decade more, kannada indutry would have probably acheived dizzy heights.

WE DONT HAVE WORDS TO SAY ANYTHING ON HIS ACTING. HE DID NOT ACT ANY CHARACTER. THE CHARACTER ACTED. MOST OF THE SONGS OF HIS MOVIES WERE HIT IN THOSE DAYS. IT IS VERY SAD THAT HIS MOVIES AND SONGS ARE NOT WIDELY AVAILABLE IN MUMBAI (EVEN IN BANGALORE!). YOU CAN GET ALBUMS OF PAKISTANI AND SOME UNKNOWN ARTISTES BUT GOOD KANNADA MOVIES AND SONGS ARE A RARE COMMODITY.

This is a tough job. When I sat to make my list of top 10 of Raj’s movies, mmmm, just coudn’t come up with only 10. It has to be atleast 50 movies, that have etched a permanent mark in my heart. How could you forget ‘Bhagyvantharu’ guys? Remember, when his son (played by Ashok) comes to fill petrol to his car, my God, that expression on Raj’s face, no one, I repeat, no one in the world can give that. The way he used to say ‘amma’ gave goosebums to me. The romantic look, sad look he would show on his face, boy! he was God sent. What a samskara born in Kuruba community. Never spoke ill about any one, lead a simple and humble life. Just the song picturization of ‘Idu Yaru bareda katheyu’ in “Premada Kanike” was enough to get him a National award. With great difficulty I have come up with my favourites-

Druvataare annavru’s all films are on top 1 only. No other actor on this world, in past or present, acted versatile roles like him. Not only that, but he was Hero in all the films, started his carier and in last film also he was a Hero. Thats why HE is FOREVER-HERO.

please buy the book tittled ‘bangarada manushya’ by a.n.prahlada rao. It lists all the movies of Dr. Raj, his heroines, music directors and directors of all the movies. Worth having it for Rs. 100. The book is available in most of the book stores. Please watch ‘Bhagyavantharu” if you have not watched it yet. Real classic movie.
