DR RAJ KUMAR: 1930-2006

It is unlikely if a non-Kannadiga will ever understand the Dr Raj Kumar phenomenon, but it wouldn’t hurt to try.

Unlike Amitabh Bachchan, he was not the star of the millennium, ubiquitous in movies, songs, ads, commercials, stage events, voice-overs, documentaries, etc.

Unlike NTR and MGR, he never tried to extract his box office appeal at the ballot box, although he could well have and many political parties did try.

Unlike Prem Nazir, he did not act in hundreds of films, just a couple of hundred of them in a long career spanning nearly five decades.

Unlike Kamal Hassan, Rajnikanth and Chiranjeevi, he never tried his hand at other south Indian languages.

Unlike his own colleague and compatriot, Vishnuvardhan, he never ventured into Bollywood.

Unlike Naseeruddin Shah and Shah Rukh Khan, he was never very comfortable in English and rarely ever tried to explain the secret of his craft.

But….

But, to see star after star of Kannada filmdom sob and cry and to launch into adjectives, and to see them sob and cry again as they fall short of words to explain, to understand the passing of a legend is a small lesson in what an abstract thing genuine superstardom is.

Stardom that transcends the ordinary and nearly touches the divine.

On television, older stars like Vishnuvardhan are saying that as long as the sun and moon exist, Dr Raj’s name will shine on and be synonymous with our language and its culture. “Dr Raj was Kannada; without him Kannada won’t exist,” he says.

On television, younger stars like Ramesh Aravind are talking of how it seems as if every family in the whole State and beyond seems to have all lost the head of the family, all at the same time. “Without him, Kannada filmdom would be nothing,” he says.

On television, T.N. Seetharam is saying how the State, the language and its culture have lost their moral compass that has also had social moorings.

On television, the Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy is saying how there will never be another Dr Raj Kumar ever again.

But even these fail to convey the true significance of a life, a legend.

The numbers tell a small story. An oeuvre of 205 films. A career of 45 years. Ten Filmfare awards. Nine State awards for best actor. A national award for singing. Padma Vibhushan. Dada Saheb Phalke award. Etcetera.

But all of these fade in front of the big ‘D’ that Dr Rajkumar brought to the screen and more importantly, off it.

D for decency.

Decency in his choice of films and topics.

Decency in his public and private conduct.

Decency in the manner in which he accepted victory and defeat.

Decency virtually in the manner in which he went about things.

This decency, in a profession that has very little of it; this decency, in an industry that could do with a lot of it; this decency that is inherent in the average Kannadiga is what tied annavru subliminally to his countless fans.

It is this subliminal connect that is behind the tears.

It is this subliminal connect that makes it difficult to believe.

    Dear Sir,

Kannada Kanmani, kannada rathna has been the only true inspiration for millions of Kannadigas who are not in karnataka. He has been a true role model and has shown us how be a proud kanndiaga, how to love and respect our parents, how to lead a simple life and believe on oneself.
when kannada filmfield was in infant stage, it was dr rajkumar who made it noticed and spread all nook an corner of the state of Karnataka. with him as the inspiration, we established kannada sanghas all over USA, Him as the inspiration, we taught our children Kannada language, culture and tradition.
Dr Rajkumar can never be replaced. There will never be a more popular kannada rathna like him.
Long live dr Rajkumar. You will always live in our hearts.

I deeply condole the death of Dr. Rajkumar. He is the man with colours and decency. He never tried anything other than acting and that shows his determination and love for the profession. His acting was confined to Kannada and that shows his commitment to language. He is a real jewel in the Kannada and indian cinema.
May God almighty will give enough power and will to all who miss him.

  6. chandu Says:

Some people never die….. he remains in our heart forever..

  7. deepak Says:

there are no words to describe the greatness of Dr.Raj.he will always be in the heart of millions of fans.no words to share. another time.

  8. Harsha Says:

Greatest Kannadiga of modern times. Such was the brilliance and presence of the man, without ever being noisy, without ever being immodest. Decency personified, in this age of little decency in the movie industry. There will never be another like him. He was a Genuine Superstar and desreved the tag completely. Larger than life figure. We Kannadigas should be proud to have lived in such an era. Not in the whole of India will there be another like him again.

  9. Yogi Says:

Though I deeply condole the death of Dr. Rajkumar and acknowledge his contribution, i dont understand the need for a Holiday, stone throws, road blockages and numerous other public nuisance. IF you say he has helped Kannada culture, is this the culture that he promoted? indians have long believed in personalities .. worshipped them..and look at the state where we are now. bangalore is deteriorating day by day.. then we say.. it’s due to outsiders. blame others. wow great indian culture.. carry on my people.. i luv u all

  10. Kiran Desai Says:

A genuine article, very true, down to every single word.
    The Legend lives.

  11. Ullas Says:

NaTasaarvabhouma Dr.Rajkumar was a very humble person. He only had primary education. But his knowledge was not less than any Phd holder. He was never greedy(as he never entered politics). He was great exponent of yoga. His was a great personality at the same time very humble person.

  12. hemamuralikrithi Says:

He is a legend who will remain in our hearts through his songs which are just simply great. Even a trained singer cannot sing so perfectly as he did. Let it be classical or filmy, the songs sung by him are just really very very great. My prayer at this time only is Oh!! God, let the sole of our greatest legend remain in peace. It is loss which can never be filled for our film industry.

  13. Harsha Says:

    Mr Yogi,
This is not place to vent your anger. If u can not say a few good things about people, I suggest you dont pass your ‘wise’ comments here.
Thanx in advance for your ‘understanding’

But truth is .. he can never die… his will remain always with us… with his movies, songs, comedy etc…..etc…

  15. Prasad Says:

It is really shocking to hear about the passing away of a colossus among actors. Words would not be adequate to describe the loss of our beloved ‘annaavru’.

I guess, the tribute paid to the legend, here in this blog says it all.

  16. Ashok Says:

Dr Raj demise means a lot ,the other name of Dr Raj is kannada, this is the way its been on my mind since my childhood. Kannada and karnataka is going to lose a strength /power /force which needed to retain the heritage and growth of kannada. One rare personality in the generation who had earned respect of many fans and had the magnetism to allure even the people who did not cherish his charishma.THERE CAN NEVER BE ANOTHER Dr Raj,the one and only who will ever live in our hearts.
It will be hard to explain how you feel when you have met him, except to see a strong change in your mind and feelings when you get closer to him and shake hands with legend ,thats Dr Raj.

    Great Article too.

  17. Girish Says:

    Hi,

For many they may not understand the impct of this. For me who is grown up seeing his films and have learnt the values of life it’s life time loss…. His is the only film we as a family used to go together .. and it was always filled with family values , presonal traits which needs to be nurtured and I have obsorbed those and grown as an individual. even today those scenes of Baktha Kumbara, bangarada manushya, mayor mutthana, jagamecchida maga, sampatthige saval helps me to stick to the core values in life. I know for sure there are hundreads in this state/place who are like me…

As far as Yogi’s comments.. i totally understand that it;s not required for stone throwing.. but friend there are people who mourn silently of this great loss but there are some people who are not used to that so and they will come back to normal definetly. It’s not the culture Raj has thought to his fans.. but there are other influencia (Bad and good ) in this society …

    Regards

Raj Kumar is pride of Karnataka….He is a great actor….He never been to politics unlike other famous actors..There is no words to describe him. There is no words to describe him.

Massage for yogi: He is pride of Karnataka….There is deffinetely need of a holiday to respect him…If you dont respsct him and kannadigas then you better leave bangalore. Bangalore is not deteriorating day by day. You people(outsiders) are making Bangalore a hell..

  19. Appan Patil Says:

May our soul rest in peace, You will always remain in hearts and minds of kannadigas. God bless karnataka, god bless kannadigas.

May you reborn (as you said in huttidare kanndanadalli huttabeku) in our land and lead us united.

  20. abhay Says:

Its end of a era and its really sad to know that the God of Kannada Film industry Dr.Raj is no more. Many people would remember Dr.Raj in many ways. For me

    As a Movie Actor -
He acted in 200 and odd movies. I haven’t seen any other actor perform the kind of roles he performed in the movies. He played the role of God to Human Being. This makes him a very very versatile actor! Also he has sung many Kannada movie and devotional songs himself. If I have to draw a comparison I would say he had the stature of Amitabh Bachan and versatality of Kishore Kumar and much more.

    As a Human Being -
He was a very humble and down to earth person. It reflected in his talk. He never was political and refused to enter polictics. Unlike his Tamil and Telugu contemporaries (MGR and NTR) Dr.Raj had all the oppurtunity to join politics. If he had, beleive me it would have been a totally different political setup in Karnataka today. Realize that Tamilnadu and AP (atleast till few years back) politics are very much film industry based. It takes a long self will to say NO to politics, afterall who doesn’t like POWER and Money!

Overall its been a sad day for people of Karnataka. People who grew up in our Karnataka will ever fondly remember our Annavaru. Finally,I would like to thank Dr.Raj for all the entertainment provided to us for so many long years.

We are really feeling bad we have lost such a great idol of our kannada film dom.We respect you Dr Raj for what ever you have done for our culture, film and you kept our language alive and proud.
You will be always there in our heart and you will be the proud idol
for our younger generation to keep our kannada language alive.

May your soul rest in peace

ALWAYS BE HAPPY WHERE EVER YOU ARE WE WILL BE ALWAYS THERE WITH YOU.

  22. Vikram Aarella Says:

For me since childhood kannada and karnataka has been synonymous with Rajkumar, coming from a Tamil dominated area i just loved me for his politeness and his humility, he has been a role model for millions of Kannadigas and it was a shocking news for me when i read about his death. may god rest his soul in peace.

  23. channa Says:

Dr Raj was great , No words to write about him. As per as yogi comment concerned it seems he was waiting to point out negative aspects, just ignore such comments and go ahead.

  24. Rama Rao Says:

I’m deeply saddened hearing the demise of “AnnavRu”. I have grown up watching his movies. He is truly A Great Actor and an idol to every Kanndadiga. Can’t express in words….AnnavRe, May your soul rest in peace. Your contributions to Kannada is greatly appreciated. You will be remembered for ever… Farewell…

  25. S. Manjunath Says:

It’s the end of an era. Rajkumar’s kannada was unparallelled. No other actor or actress has such a hold on the language. His flawless speech in Kannada language cannot be imitated by his own sons. Rajkumar was the real Raja for Kannada Cinema and language.

As regards Yogi’s letter, it is quite understandable since he is a refugee in Bangalore and has come to earn his bread here.

  26. Shankru Says:

Dr Raj, we will miss you and miss you and miss you. I wonder who will fight for the cause of kannada now, thank you for being in our midst and helping us secure our pride. Your songs and words will inspire kanndigas for many years to com.

Thanks for all you did for us..Raj.

    Kannadiga.

  27. Harish Kumar Says:

We have lost the one and only paradise of karnataka. Words are lesser to describe him.It is a real shock, still I am unable to believe this. I dont think this paradise can be obtained by us again but I am proud of being lived in his era.

  28. Abhinav Kaiser Says:

I am in the US and it was a shocker this morning when I read that Dr.Raj had passed away. I can’t imagine how Karnataka would look like without him. I actually partially agree with Yogi regarding the atrocities of stone throwing and such. Dr. Raj was a peaceful man and the way you show respect is by being peaceful on a holiday. People in Karnataka try to take advantage of things like this to cause unrest and I am totally against it.

Everything said and done, Raj, we miss you and I am sure the whole country would miss you too…

  29. Mohammed Ilyas Says:

Yogi: Yogi means one who has renounced. Why don’t you renounce your job and get lost to your state where you have no means of earning your bread. We would at least heave a sigh of relief that one unwanted character is gone from our beautiful city Bangalore.

  30. Kavi Says:

Raj, sitting in US my heart goes out to all kanndigas for being part of this great journey with Raj over many years. Your loss in suvarna karnataka year is big loss to karnataka. May your soul rest in peace.

    God bless karnataka.

    Dear all,
I deeply mourn the demise of Dr Raj,who was truly a embodient of dharma, high social values. It pains to see that people like Yogi go around making statements which brings down people of Karnataka. If his memory is working what happened to Madras when MGR died,What happened to Hyderabad when NTR passed,am not tryin to comparing ourselves with them, but its quite understable considering the confusin that was around and people just could not control their emotions.
    MAY HIS SOUL RIP.

  42. shaolinyogi Says:

well definitely today is a very sad day to all kannadigas and film lovers. Dr. Raj, the annavaru of kannada is no more. Well i feel legends like him can only die physically but he shall live in all we fans to eternity. Well i realised one thing from this ariticle that unlike other Matinee idols of south india he acted oly in Kannada movies, it definitely reflects his character and commitment for Kannada (all though he hails from a tamil dominated part of karnataka).
And one suggestion for all yogi and anti yogi PPL , guys this is to convey your feelings abt Dr araj, so plz aviod personal opinions,
    thank you,

It was hard for me to believe that such a person existed in flesh and blood. Now how can I believe that he is no more!

  44. Prithvi Says:

I grew up watching Annavaru movies. More than anything, his values and personality has influenced me a lot. There will never be another Annavaru.

what surprises me is abouty the wokhardt hospital, he was admitted there just couple of weeks ago with chest pain and i really dont know what the doctors there treated him for, i feel they should have done better with him

  46. someone Says:

He, like no other in kannada cinema, depicted real sorrows that people faced every day - oppresive landlords, jealous relatives, sudden calamity. There was sincerity on both sides of the screen - the audience and Rajkumar. I know this souds melodramatic, but when I see your old aunt wiping her tears after watching a Rajkumar movie, I can actually understand what went behind those tears. And he personified the ambitions of a lot of people - both on and off screen.

I still can’t come terms that he has really passed away. RIP, annavre.

  47. Prakash Says:

” Dr Rajkumar” the name that has entwined with kannada. Karnataka, the land of kannadigas, with its rich culture, tradition and language that has its roots which dates back over 5000 years, had found a new voice and a new icon in form of Dr Raj to show the noble facet of idealism. A true ” annavru” of every sort, it’s hard to fathom the length and breadth of his reach, which is much beyond the kannada bhoomi, now reaching the heaven abode.
You will always remain in our hearts,
    Long live Raj,

  48. basavraj Says:

i have grown up with dr rajkumar and immersed my self his good values which he portrayed in his movies and real life, thats what the impact he created on kannadigas life.
he grown up and enriched kannada culture along with many eminent personalities of karanataka.
he is very simple , humble man a family can sit and watch his movies

I do agree that people like YOGI who commented above is a refugee and he has got shelter in karnataka with our open hearts, so we should ignore fool like him and his comments.

  49. Raaj Says:

Today is a very sad day for all Indians and more so for Kannadigas. Sri Rajkumar was an example of Baashyabhimaana, preserving culture , language and one’s roots. All of us should follow him to preserve the richness of Kannada which he so greatly propounded.

The whole night I was thinking about the stature & the space he has for himself in this mother earth. He is more than a film star. The personality he portrayed is worth an example for the present geneartion. No words is also a tribute to this yogi as there are no words to explain him. May god rest his soul in peace. We miss you annavre..

It was really shock for me when I saw this news today morning in US. He was my idol from my childhood. It is not easy being simple, decent and humble with such a huge popularity and fan following. I see him as model person who with his huge success, money and power (people) never forgot his roots and humble beginning and never forgot give due credits to his parents for the right upbringing. I think he had a great inner strength that made him a great man. I have seen rural Karnataka where I grow up people named their sons as Rajkumar and wished they could become like him. There is no doubt he has inspired multi generations in Karnataka and will in future. Off course, he is the best versatile actor I ever seen. Most of the film personalities are liked for their acting and that’s it and not behind that, but for RajKumar people liked him as a great actor first then followed him for his values in life, character and commitment to culture of the land.
I feel my self lucky to be in his era.

    May good bless his soul.

  60. Guy Says:

karnataka putra rajkumar is no more. When my mom told me this over phone, Thousand os miles away from Bengaluru, In US I felt I should have been in bangalore now. The whole night I was thinking about the stature & the space he has for himself in this mother earth. He is more than a film star. The personality he portrayed is worth an example for the present geneartion. No words is also a tribute to this yogi as there are no words to explain him. May god rest his soul in peace. We miss you annavre..

    DIGNITY IS LIFE,
there cannot be a better example than Dr Rajkumar’s life to explain the above sentence..
truly will miss the character who had a magnanimous view of life..
may his soul rest in peace…

  63. Gomatesh Ravanavar Says:

    Dr.Raj,

As long as Kannada film land lives you will be remembered.

If you would have mind you have acted in other language movies.

The real tribute to you is to contribute a bit for the cause of Kannada land, language and culture.

May almighty rest your soul in peace.

  64. Ishwar Says:

I mourn the demise of Dr. Rajkumar.
He was not only the movie superstar, but personified form of Karnataka. There is nobody else in Karnataka who enjoys such widespread support and worship in any field.
His movies have always been in good taste. Perhaps he is one of the very few in the country who was so powerful, yet very humble, ture to the spirit of Karnataka.
As far as the comments are concerned, I get annoyed. Could the intelligent guy who ‘wonders’ if Rajkumar promoted such culture, can he dare to make same comment aboiut MGR in Tamilnadu?
I have met few outsiders in Bangalore who believe that it is paradise because of them. I was a moderate Kannadiga till I migrated to Bangalore. Afetr seeing the ‘ATTAHAASA’ of outsiders, I have become a hardliners. Sarcastic comments from such folks will only strengthen such feeling.

Annavre, may your soul rest in peace. Hope u continue to unite Kannadigas forever and help to live in pride on home soil.

    -Ishwar

  65. RG Says:

:-( :-( :-( A Great Loss. words are not enough to describe our greif at the passing away of the great Dr Raj.

  66. Dr Nagaraj Mysore Says:

it is a total eclipse to the kannadigas and the kannada film land.He was the best example for Decency, Diplomacy,Dignity for the present generation of film stars.
we miss you Rajanna. Rajanna amar rahe.

  67. Rajkumar - Cairo, Egypt Says:

I feel i have lost myself, I was named after this great human being by my dad. Indeed he has been so upright. I wonder if there can be someone so big yet so humble. I never cried when he was held captive, for i knew his inner strengths, but today I weep for him. A man I liked and loved and follow. I miss u………….

  68. Unni Nair Says:

A day Kannada Cries, A day Karnataka cries for the loss of the greatest of Kannadigas. He was a a Giant in his own way. He was an idol in many ways. A man of principle in every sense. Power did not lure him. A True Mannina Maga, A true Bangarada Manushya. My heartfelt condolences.

    Unni Nair

    A Malayali born in Karnataka.

  69. ramesh Says:

i just dont understand the situation in bangalore after the demise of legendary Dr RajKumar, Since the State and nation has lost such a great personality people instead of mourning his death are out on streets attacking every vehicle which passes by mallya road and Corporation Circle.

I was a victim of the mob and was lucky enough with the help of cab driver to escape frm that place..

  70. Prashanth Says:

A towering loss to an film industry and to whole Karnataka. He was hero onscreen but larger than hero ofscreen. The devotion for acting he carried shows in every role. For a true Kannadiga Dr Raj roles are a role model for their life be the role of Bangarada Manushya, Kasturi Nivasa, Jeevana Chaitra or movies like Baktha Kumbhara, Mantralaya Mahatme etc. The treasure he has left can never be matched with money as personality like Dr Raj are beyond the reach of materialistic money. He was true epitome of Kannadigas, Karnataka all over the world. Long live his dreams and may God bless his soul..

  71. Pradeep Says:

No words can express the greatness of Annavaru. Its a waste of effort as nothing we all kannadiga’s can put together to express his greatness.

We’ve lost the lone crusader for the cause of Kannada.

  72. Arun Says:

Sorry for my ignorance. But what’s the Dr. for? Is it a Phd for something, or like a doctor by profession, or an honorary Dr. granted by some institution. Just curious ….

  73. Ashwini Says:

    GREAT LOSS…

What a sad news.. We lost a gentleman actor .

I don’t think we will get to see another actor like
him who stood for his principles (doing what he did
    best)

Popular saying “kannadakkobbane rajakumara” is so
true.. A respectful homage to this “bangaradha
manushya” who entertained 3 to 4 generations of
    kannadigas.

May his soul rest in peace.

    we will miss u Dr.Raj

  74. Shree Harsha Maiya Says:

    JAI DR. RAJ.
    WE WILL REALLY MISS YOU.
    OUR HEART CRIES FOR YOU.
    MAY YOU REST IN PEACE

  75. Sandeep Says:

Words are not enough to explain the kind of loss incurred by Karnataka and all the Kannadigas. He was a powerful representative of Kannada people who brought great value to the Kannada film industry and also had been a moral support for the the Kannada/Karnataka revolutions.

Now, coming to Mr.Yogi’s comments, we should blame it on the Kannadigas itself. Look at his audacity in making comments about our great hero when the entire forum is meant to express the condolences. These outsiders don’t have any value for the good virtues-Kindness,accomodativeness,humbleness and tolerant behaviour of the Kannadigas. Added to this they screw up our happiness at our own places.

  76. S. P Baradwaj Says:

Who said Dr. Raj is no more ?
Is jesus no more ? Is Mahatma Gandhi no more ?
The work done by Great people never dies.
Dr. Raj is too good to take place among the greatest Human beings on this planet.
TODAY IS THE BIRTHDAY OF DR. RAJ in the Heaven of gods.
We as a proud Kanadiga should not mourn for Some one who never dies, that is our great ” Chiranjivi Dr.Rajkumar”.

  77. Harish Says:

Legends never die!! They become Immortal!! Long Live Dr. Raj

  78. Raghu kengeri Says:

when i read or think about any historical hero’s rama, krishna, arjuna, kannapa, shiva, kanakadasa, kabeera, krishnadevaraya, mayuravarma, kalidasa, mahishasura, hiranyakashyapu, ravana, bhakta kumbaara, the only one face comes in front of my eyes is “ANNAVRU”I was very much impressed with is simplicity ,It was my memorable moment when i met in the sets of “gajapathi garvabhanga”in abhimaan studios and “JEEVANA CHAITRA” and took is autograph. he is one and only real super star inside the sets and outside the sets of indian cinema.

  81. Ramesh HP Says:

Gayana Gandharva, Rasikara Raja, Karnataka Ratna, Kannadigara Kanmani, Natasarwabhouma Dr Rajkumar!!! He was a major influence in my life. He was the hero I worshipped in my youth. I started appreciating his art (both acting and singing) more and more as I matured. Can’t think of life without his songs and movies - what a great dimension to the cultural landscape of Karnataka. His movies like Bangarada Manushya, Kasturi Nivasa, Bhakta Kumbara, Babhruvahana, Kaviratna Kalidasa, Sakshatkara (and many more) were masterpieces. He would live for ever in the hearts of his fans - both young and old alike. His songs on Raghavendra Swami and Lord Ayyappa were among the best in devotional music. His great acting, his dialogue delivery, his multi-faceted talent for any kind of role (mythological, historical, social, new age… ;) is a trend setter.

These days we keep losing the stalwarts one after the other… Just another reminder that life is short and we need to make it worthwhile.

    With tears,
    Ramesh

  82. Ignatius David Says:

    “Avana Niyama Meere Jagadalenu Saagadu…….”
Nothing in this world can deviate from the laws of Almighty…

The call came came from the Heavens…. and our Bangarada Manushya left us for the heavenly place.
May his soul rest in peace

    For Mr Yogi:
Voilence was not something that was preached by Dr Rajkumar. Even when he was kidnapped by Veerappan, he requested the public to maintain PEACE.
People go out of control when emotions are running high. It will be the same when similar things happen in our family circles. But it will be to a lesser degree. Can’t u undrestand simple facts of life??

  83. Prashanth, USA Says:

Shoot! No mood to work. I received numerous text messages from my siblings who are in india about the news and situations that makes me miss my bangalore a lot! I grew up watching his movies. It makes me very sad when i see that he is history now… I still remember when my uncles were trying to by-heart his dialogues in babruvahana and mayura - “chikkappa, hahaha….illi neenu chikka appane horathu illyarigoo dodda appanalla…”

His black and white movies takes me to a different era. It truly reminds me about my parents in a big family entrusting on family values and culture!

What makes him to stand ahead of his contemporaries are his body that can be moulded to any type of character he plays, his clear pronounciation of words, his easy flow with the acting to name a few…

Conclusive note with his famous evergreen song-
“Naaniruvude nimagagi naadiruvudu namagagi, kanneer yeke bisi usireke…”

    Finally,
“Aadisidhaata ‘aathura thori’ aata mugisidaa….soothrava hidida bombeya murida mannaagisida…” But, he exited from this planet gracefully…

    Truely “Kannada Dhruvathaare”

  84. Dr.Sheshadri Says:

A day of darkness has struck so cruely over all of us, kannadigas. We lost a legend who has showed all of us how to live life with dignity n simplicity.Dr.Raj will be in our soul n breath forever…..!!!

  85. ramya Says:

Dr Raj kumar is one such personality who could be seen in once life time, he is a legend by himself and really a great loss to the kannada industry to have lost him.Being a kannadiga , listening to his songs brings back life in me,such people are born only once and we are all deeply lost in sorrow , of losing him forever.

  86. simran Says:

Dr Raj kumar is one such personality who could be seen in once life time, he is a legend by himself and really a great loss to the kannada industry to have lost him.Being a kannadiga , listening to his songs brings back life in me,such people are born only once and we are all deeply lost in sorrow , of losing him forever.

  87. Krishna Says:

There are no words to express the anguish of the passing away of Dr.Raj. He was a very simple man, I have met him in person as a child a number of times. In his death, the language of Kannada has lost one of its greatest children. As a homage to him people should make it a point to be proud of Kannada language and culture as long as they live. This in particular applies to all Kannadigas, in India or around the world. Let us say a simple prayer for his soul to rest in peace.

    Krishna

  88. prashanth shiva ,Germany Says:

    Dr Rajkumar,

We are missing you a lot.
    I am speechless……….
May his soul rest in peace.
    Jai Raj

  89. Kiran Gowda Says:

If anyone wants to know what genuine success, aplomb, resilience is — It is Dr Raj. If anyone wants to know what life is — It is Dr Raj. Dr Raj will live in our Kannada hearts as long as this universe exists. May peace be with Annavru’s atma.

  90. Phanindra Says:

Thanks for bringing out the attraction in Dr. Raj. Its not all those awards but the Decency..which is a rare commodity in the world these days. Dr. Raj was DECENCY personified. Rest in Peace my friend…NagunaguthaNali Nali yene agalli..yalla devara varavede ni tilli…..

  91. SHIVA SUMAN Says:

Body dies but the soul is Immortal

  92. sanaulla sheik Says:

Dr.Rajkumar is a Legend. His contribution to the Kannada cinema is unimaginable. I dont think any other person can contribute and touch the heart of every kannadiga whether in the city or the village as he has done. I always liked his movies specially him as a detective. He has shown the film industry that age is not the bar for a good actor. We cannot forget this day when we have lost a jewel.

  93. Ragu Says:

They just dont come like him anymore. They say that if you live a clean and honest life, you live it twice. The present and later on when you look back at it. That was Dr Raj. Simple, humble human being.

    May he rest in peace.

  94. Raja Says:

I think the author of this passage needs to chk the facts. Raajkumar acted in atleast one telugu movie. I cant recollect the name as it is a very old film(Black & White) but its based on Bhakta Kannappa(No, I am not talking abt the one in which Krishnam Raju acted ).

  95. Ramesh HP, Cupertino, CA, USA Says:

Forgot a few things in my earlier note:

Among all his movies, Mantralaya Mahatme (life story of Sri Raghavendra Swamiji) was a personal favorite of Dr. Rajkumar. I read about it in an interview. His two songs from Mantralaya Mahatme are immortal:

    Kaliyirondu Pathavannu Kannada Taaymakkale
Indu Enage Govinda (a composition of Raghavendra Swamiji himself)

Both these songs are sung by the great Dr PB Sreenivos - PBS was to Rajkumar what Mukesh was to Raj Kapoor.

Of course, Sakshatkara was one of the most emotional classics - typical of the great Puttanna Kanagal.

May the great soul rest in peace I am no mood to work today. In fact, I broke down bitterly while having lunch. It is a personal loss to me. I had seen him in my dream just a day ago. It was funny. He was with me in the dream, I saw him and try to pull his leg by singing “Aakasha Kelageke Bantu…” Then he asked me: “Now tell me in which movie this song is featured?” I was not sure. I replied: “Kamana Billu”… Wrong answer, Dr. Raj was amused. But not me… Then I thought and thought and thought and finally said: “Samayada Gombe!” The answer was right but Dr. Raj was not there. It was morning already and I just woke up to realize it was all a dream.

This dream is just one example to get an idea how Dr. Raj has become a part and parcel of so many lives, especially Kannadigas. A true role model.

I had seen him in person in couple of occasions: once in 1986 or 1987 near KR Circle in Bangalore. He was leading Gokak movement then. Later, in 2003 January, I saw him visiting the great poet Dr K S Narasimhaswamay’s (of Mysooru Mallige fame) house, to pay his respects to the departed soul. The same day veteran actor Gangadhar had passed away… and GV Iyer just a few weeks ago. Dr. Raj was so sad and said a few words about the loss of these personalities. I didn’t dare approach him on that occasion. I really wanted to meet him sometime but it was not to be.

I miss you dear Raj. You will live on for ever!

    Tearfully,
    Ramesh

  96. ramegauda Says:

we all respect Dr Rajkumar avaru ji but this respect should have been shown to the way we mourned his demise today in the city of bangalore - what is being achieved by this way of public outcry affecting thousands of children, kids, elderly and familied people who were moving across the city/Railway station/bus stand when all this public exhibition of feelings started.. we are sure that Annavaru would not have liked this behaviour of his devotees .. atleast his family can appeal to the fans to make it a private affair of silent mourning .. that is the best way of tribute to this doyen great kannada idol.. With sincere prayers for the departed soul and may his soul rest in peace .. god give strength to his family to bear this grief.. and strength to all of us to go thru this suffering of our daily routine

  97. Bharath Says:

    Huttidhare Kannada naadal hutta beku,
    Meetidhare kannada manna meeta beku,
    Badhukidhu Jataka Bandi,
    Idhu vidhi odisuva bandi..

Please Dr. Raj Come Back Again,
Never thought that such a day would come and never imagined that i would miss him one day.

A simple man, a humble being who never forgot the values…

Annavre, May Your Soul Rest in Peace, and if there is life after life May you be born as Dr. Raj again and all of us as your children..

Reminds me of a song from Nirvana..
    Come as You Are,
    As You were,
as we all want u to be..
    as a freind , as a freind
    as an old memory
Take your time, hurry up ……

  98. Dinesh Says:

I stay in US and hen I saw his picture today morning in Times Of India website. I thought he might have got one more award or something. Such was his personality. But when I read that he is no more, I just couldnt digest that. I cant digest it even now. Hope god give strength to his family and millions of his fans including myself.

  99. Lakshmi Says:

I am in complete shock and misbelief. I have seen almost all his movies. I especially loved his historical and mythological movies. I think he was the best actor in the whole world and will be for a long time to come. He was also like a perfect man with good qualities and values. He had a devine radiance. In his role as Krishna Deva Raya, you just feel he was the king himself. Whenever you watch his movies, you don’t feel like you are watching a movie, you totally get lost. All his movies were meaningful, decent and versatile. I just don’t know what is going on in Bangalore right now, I can’t even imagine. I wish I was there.

  100. Shyam Kishore, New Zealand Says:

Very sad news. I am really not able to express the loss. How versatile was an actor he is. Really he was the only and will be the only superstart of Kannada film industry.

  101. vivideesh Says:

He was one great human being who is a epitome of simplicity

  102. Shanth Says:

Dr. Rajkumar was a real idol to millions of Kannadigas in many ways. He was a non-smoker, non-alcoholic and refused to act as a drunkard in his movies. He was known to perform Yogasanas daily which kept his spirits up when he was kidnapped by bandit Veerappan. Unlike many other Indian film starts, he was not ambitious to get political power. One instance was, in 1977 during emergency, late PM Indira Gandhi lost her MP seat from Rae Bareli (U.P) and came to Karnataka to win MP seat from Chikmagalore constituency. At that time main Indian political leaders requested Rajkumar to contest against Indira Gandhi to defeat her. He said no to election and never tempted to enter politics. Had he been entered politics? he would have ruled Karnataka for many years. This show his greatness. He was very simple and humble person.

May his soul rest in peace
    Jai Raj
    Jai Karnataka
    Shanth

  103. Prashanth, USA Says:

No, i can’t work… seriously! Can anyone plzzzzzzzzzzzzzz tell me it is just a joke or rumour ??? I can’t buy this - ‘Raj bid good bye to his millions of fans’….

  104. Anand (USA) Says:

I am in USA and I was shocked to hear this morning of Annavaru’s death. When I was in Bangalore recently, he had been admitted briefly to Wockhardt but he had recuperated well. Though I had seen most of his movies, I had developed renewed interest of late and purchased all his published VCD’s and DVD’s - Bangaradha Manushya, Aakasmika, Saakshathkaara, Chalisuva Modagalu, etc.
As somebody has rightly pointed out on this forum, it is extremely difficult to explain to a non-Kannadiga, what Rajkumar was to Kannadigas. He was literally a phenomenon.
It can well be said to the thespian’s credit that he led a full life.
May his sould rest in peace.
While one cannot predict the future, it is my personal belief that it is highly unlikely that any person will ever capture the hearts of Kannadigas the way Dr Raj did. Einstein’s quote on Mahatma Gandhi comes to my mind.

  105. Unknown Says:

Why are people here copying and leaving the same messages over and over again ?

  106. Sumanth Channapatna Says:

It is a really sad day for Karnataka to have lost such a champion and ambassidor of Kannada. He leaves behind a vacuum which will not be filled. I don’t think there is any other personality that can make Kannadigas keep their head as high. He was the embodiment of the values of the state - honest, simple, extremely humble and polite. If I was in Bangalore I would have paid my last respects to such a noble soul at Palace grounds.

  107. SK Suhas Says:

    We will always love him.

    Suhas

  108. Priya Says:

Dr Rajkumar the Legend that will rule Karnataka for ever. I cannot imagine how will I overcome the emotions that will flow every time when I hear to his voice , his songs…..Oh God. I pray God let this legend be born again in Kannada nadu and make us proud and cheer. We love you Dr. Rajkumar.

May His soul rest in peace. Let us all pray.

  110. VINAY Says:

SILENCE Is the ONLY way ANNAVARU SPEAKS…..the SILENCE is SPEAKING!

  111. uma from California Says:

I heard about Dr.Rajkumar’s demise at midnight when my SIL from bangalore called me. I couldn’t sleep after that. Yes, it is a great loss for all of us. I have not been able to convey this sad news to my kid who is 5 years and loves Rajkumar, though he has seen very few movies and loved them all. I cannot forget that the first song that he learnt in Kannada was the one from Rajkumar’s movie. So, even a kid can fall for him while watching his movies.
Being far off from Bangalore, we are at more pain than kannadigas at Bangalore. Reading peoples comments from all over the world and how they feel, does ease a little bit of pain.
This article has made a good effort to capture Dr. Rajkumar.
Hope more of Dr.Rajkumar’s movies come on DVD’s or VCD’s so that we can keep him alive in our lives.
I don’t have any more words to explain his loss to me, my family and fellow kannadigas.

  112. Sampath Ramareddy Says:

Deepest condolences…It’s hard to beleive that Annavru is no more! Undisputedly, the star belonged to the whole Karanataka state and was close to the heart of all Kannadigas. We are really greatful to be part of his era really.

  115. Raghu Says:

I deeply condole the death of Dr. Rajkumar. I’ve always liked his acting.

They’ve missed another comparison to most of the actors in the list, that Unlike Most of Other actors North/South, Dr. Raj has not helped common people of Karnataka in Charity / Seva / Etc.

  116. dhanu Says:

the person of this name Dr. Rajkumar may be invisible or may be lost forever but his voice and fame will always be heared .May god give the strength to his family .WE LOVE YOU RAJKUMAR

  117. Dr.venugopal reddy Says:

such a unfortunate thing happened to Kannadanaadu, the stone has fallen and the biggest star has collapsed.

  118. vishal and dheeraj from scotland Says:

  121. Prashanth Says:

I came to now only from rediff, I was really surprise to see this.

Rajkumar is one of the greatest actor the nation has ever seen.

He is acted in almost KIND of roles. I cherish his ‘Bond’ films like
    ..Goa dalli CID 999 etc.,

He had made kannada film Industry no less then any other film Industry.

  122. Rajan Says:

Though I am not kannadiga and live in Trichy, but I know from my relatives more about Rajkumar because of his good movies. He made lots of good movies which are worth watching especially for family members.

I don’t understand Yogi’s anger. Mr. Yogi if I am not wrong you are also Indian like us and you know it is very hard to control emotions of very few percentage of fanatics like you, who create all kind of problems when their emotions are running high. But 99% of Kannadigas and non-kannadigas living in Karnataka are very nice peoples and can control emotions and have great respect on Rajkumar, kannadigas and beautiful state of Karnataka.

  123. Ramesh J Says:

    Dr Raj,

He is just a legent of the film industry. No one is compared to his acting talent. he is the star which never can be replaced and no star can be like that. It really a huge huge huge loss to the film industry of Kannada.

A deeply confession on his departure.

  124. simplicity was his greatness Says:

Being a Telugu speaking person resided in Bangalore for the past 5 years, I could never see Late Dr. Raj and Karnataka as separate entities. He was a true kannadiga and was an inspiration to my kannada learning.

dear ……, Man is mortal. whoever has taken birth on this earth, has to depart one day or the other. But one can become immortal by his behaviour, his deeds and virtues. While coming from India I brought with me almost all the dvds of Dr Raj’s hit songs and didn’t expect his sudden demise. We’re all shocked…
May his soul rest in peace.

  127. Naveen Says:

It is indeed a loss. I remember growing up to songs from Dr. Raj movies on AIR Vividbharathi when I was a kid and later the first movie screened by DD Bangalore, which was Krishnadevaraya. You can indeed say that Dr. Raj and his movies have been an indelible part of life and experiences for me and a lot of my family and friends.

As a line from one of my favourite songs go..
‘Avana niyama meeri illi yenu saagadu, naavu nenasidanthe baalalenu nadeyadu’. Though we would want him around for ever, that is not to be so.

It is a fervent hope that the current crop of actors (including his very own progeny) can live up to this great man’s standards.

  128. Ganesh Says:

Some where in the heart, i felt shallow on hearing that Rajkumar is no more. Didnt realize who was Rajkumar till i heard his great voice 3 years ago.
    May god bless him.

He was a gifted artist with extraordinary acting skills and very sweet voice.

The legend is no more with us, we can never see him singing and dancing on the stage the favourite song of all Kannadigas “Huttidare Kannada Nadalli Huttabeku”.

Annaavru was an amazing actor, he was brilliant, witty, sentimental,,,,list goes on and on..

His movies are evergreen - can be watched any time any where and it fills you with emotion and many a times touches you.
Annavru movies are always entertaining and complete family package. His movies can be watched by whole family be it at home or theater.
All his fans be it kannadigas or other are going to miss a great personality. Rajanna thank you for your service to the great karnataka people.

I come from a Taluk where Rajanna was born. I still remember childhod days

The impact of Annavru’s movies on the surrounding town/village people were so so s greate that people visit to the movie halls with their complete family (village family means father/mother/grand../children/uncles/aunts/,,,, ) in bullock-cart and have a little picknic for a day or two. This normally happens days after festivals like Ugadi/Ganesh Gowri/Deepavali/,, and the celebrations go on for days and days.

I still have this picture as I used go school passing the theaters.

    Maan what an effect!!!!!

That’s what you call Dr. Raj’s Phenamenon

  145. Ramesh HP, Cupertino, USA Says:

Here is my musical tribute to the great actor/singer…

Dr. Rajkumar (1929-2006) was a towering personality in South Indian state of Karnataka. He was a super-star actor par excellence, a great singer, a cultural icon, a role model. He was one of the most respected citizens: with a fan following spanning people from all cultures and ages.

He acted in 206 films, in a career spanning about 45 years, starting in 1954. He played all types of roles - mythological, historical, folklore, social, bond — just everything. He won several awards: including 10 filmfare, Padmabhushana, “Karnataka Ratna”, and the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke.

He was the only hero in Indian cinema to succeed both in acting and singing. He started off full-fledged singing with the magical ‘Yaare Koogadali’ in 1976 (though “Thumbithu Manava” was his first song, dated 1958). Veteran singer P.B. Sreenivos used to sing for him earlier.

I dedicate the following iMix on iTunes to the great soul who left us today:

  146. Nishu Says:

Dr. Rajkumar is no more. I am sorry. The ailing veteran actor passed away at the age of 76. I wonder if it is an awkward age to die, keeping Indian males life expectancy in view (63 years-2001 census) .God damn he was no immortal with drops of ambrosia mixed with his bile juice. Then why so much fuss tension especially in the suburb of Bangalore in Kangeri. My friend (a non-Kannadiga) was threatened by grieved public just because he wanted few vox pops (people’s opinion) on Dr. Rajkumar’s demise. Mob ripped his shirt and forced him to talk in Kannada. The poor fellow knows only one sentence “Kannada gottilla” (I don’t know Kannada). But he didn’t mean to convey that he was indiffrent to the sentiments of Kannadigas.

  147. mathav Says:

When we are all feeling sad and condoling the death of our revered leader Dr Raj, Times Of India has no article published in their front page online. They have a Mallika Sheravat’s photo instead. It is an insult to us Kannadigas. When Yahoo, MSN, Reuters could have the news on main page TOI has neglected it. They had it only the first day with a picture article. They give importance to all nonsense irrelevent issues. I call upon you guys to abondon reading that website/paper. I’m not trying to spoil the mood but felt hurt with the neglectance they are showing on this important subject.

  148. Pradeep Says:

It’s a sad day for all Kannadigas. No, i would say for all Indians.. Rajkumar was the most illustrious son of Kannada Thayi. He gave everything for uplifting the cause of Kannada. He was most supportive of Gokak movement. It’s just not fair on the part of God that he was snatched from us.

Rajkumar may not be anymore in this world physically, but he will always be present spiritually. He taught us to love our mother (Thayige takka maga, Amma, etc). He taught us to love our language (Huttidare kannada naadali huttabeku…). He was like a brother to thousands of sisters, father figure to thousands of people and a role model to all of us.

As you have rightly pointed out, it’s in his humbleness was his greatness. He had lots of achievements but they were nothing for him, as they were ” abhimani devara krupe”. It’s sad that we will never get to see Raj extolling good virtues on screen, will never get to hear Gana gandharva’s voice, will never see “Amoghavarsha Nrupatunga or Bhakta Ambarisha”. Still the legacy he has left behind is sufficient for this Yuga.

    Nishu,
I can understand some people creating trouble. It should not be done and it should condemned.
But your comments ‘I wonder if it is an awkward age to die, keeping Indian males life expectancy in view ‘ is in poor in taste and is deeply lacking in common sens and respect. I really wonder if u belong to the educated group or the uneducated crop of uncivilized hooligans.
By the way no man is immortal. Buddha died, Swami Vivekananda died and Jesus died too… Its the deeds that makes a man immortal not drops of ambrosia mised with bile juice, in case u didnt know. Shame on you and your petty mind.

  152. Chittu Says:

Annavre, You were the epitome of Kannadiga’s culture, honesty and down to earth nature. I still remember all those movies of yours which I managed to see when I was a kiddo. Sitting here in Australia, I am at loss of words to explain to some my dumbfounded colleagues who can’t understand why our Bangalore counterparts cannot come into work today just bcoz of the death of one of those actors and the entire state being shut down !!! Am equally at a loss of words to explain to them the way we feel about YOU. But you know it alright the kind of place we have given you in our hearts. Don’t know why I feel some loss down deep in my heart. May GOD bless you and may your soul rest in peace. Annavre, neevu namma Devara hage. We will miss you. Rajanna nige Jai.

  153. Harsha Says:

    Nishu,
Since u dont seem to support people living for long years, I wish people like u perish early. The sooner the better. Your indifferent comments are desrespectful and pathetic at best.
Raj is an immortal and will stay immortal no matter how much u crib.
And my sincere apologies for what happened to your friend. Just because of a few bad apples here and there doesnt mean greatness of Raj is diminished in anyway.

  154. A non-Kannadiga Says:

Why do you want everyone to cry with you? Why do you want to shut down the entire city? Why can’t you grieve in private?

  155. Ramesh HP, Cupertino, USA Says:

    Mathav,

You are right. Shame on Times of India. There was no hurry to put Mallika on the front page when such a great personality breathed his last. Just a proof that ToI is the National Rag of India. I’m not going to read ToI anymore. I find Hindu much better - they have just the news and not some sensational crap.

May Dr Raj’s family find their peace. It was so sad to hear about the disturbances (I heard Dr Raj’s sons and other senior film personalities pleading public to maintain peace - how sad)… And Mrs. Parvathamma Rajkumar had to plead as well… May the almighty help them to overcome this unfathomable grief.

  156. Chittu Says:

Nishu, you silly woman, don’t talk like you have been dropped from heaven. Just because one of your boy friends got raptured (am using a dignified word as I don’t wanna be too rude on this forum, if u know what I mean) doesn’t mean that you have all the bloody right to speak against Bangalore and Kannadigas. Every Indian vents his or her emotions in this way when they are crestfallen. And if you find a place better than Bangalore, why don’t you get lost ?

And you Non-kannadiga, why don’t you now shut your bloody mouth and get lost to your own state ?

  157. Nav Says:

Raj - No more !!! When I read this news, it definitely came as an unpleasant shock. It was hard to believe. Raj was a household name in Karnataka. Many have grown up seeing his movies. One can easily say that Raj’s simplicity and decency in his acting had inspired millions of fans to such an extent that they started incorporating those fine qualities in their lives. Raj was a part of every Kannadiga’s life, inspiring them to become good individuals who never took to smoking and drinking and always harmless and well natured thus making the state of Karnataka a peaceful place to live. No wonder people from all over India come to Karnataka to earn a living and a part of that credit MUST go to Dr. RajKumar without whom it would have been difficult to imagine a peaceful state. Hats off to Dr. Raj!!!

May his soul rest in peace!

    Nondha abhimani

  158. Great Says:

TOI has been a typical ‘Page 3′ mag since quite sometime. This is not the first time. Its best to ignore such news sources. No point paying attention to what they do. Guess they prefer to see Mallika sherwat and other top models on their home page because it sells.

    Non-Kannadiga,
We dont want anyone to cry with us. We would be thankful if could shut your dirty mouths for 3-4 days. Thanx for understanding.

  159. Ramu Says:

  160. Srikanth Tyamagondlu Says:

Can’t describe the loss in words. DaRaKu meant much more than an actor
or singer to me. As many readers have already pointed out, the loss is
much more for those who have grown up watching his movies, tuning to
his songs and dormantly imbibing many good values he conveyed. Today if I am non smoking, non-alcoholic, respect women, parents and practise healthy religion, I clearly see his role in them. I feel it is due to this
bonding, it makes the DrRaKu and kannidigara relationship totally
    unique.

Though he hasn’t been active recently, I had taken it for
granted that he will be with us for a long time. But as he sung, “huttu
saavu baalinalli eradu konegalu, bayasidaaga kaanadiruva eradu
mukhagaLu”. I am bidding a heavy hearted farewell to DrRaKu. We will
    miss him big time.

    Srikanth

  161. Shobha Says:

What will I say - I am so deeply affected by this gentleman’s passing, I have no words to express my grief. In this world of lies, vulgarity, violence and duplicity, he was a true human being. Humility and modesty personified. For him, the world began and ended with Kannada and Karnataka. No amount of money or fame could lure this true son of Karnataka away from his mothertongue and motherland. People talk of donating their organs etc, he did so without every bleating about. A great human being, a great living and an even greater way of demise.

In this hour of grief, when emotions are riding high, I request my brethern of Karnataka to show restraint and not to revert to violence. It is god’s decision to take him away from us, it was not the act of any other human being. So why do you want to punish your fellow brethern for this. They are as shocked and grieved as you all. So please do not resort violence, it will not bring our dear departed soul back to us. Let him not suffer in death what he did not in life. Let us not give his soul for grief by our actions. Let us mourn for him in peace and pray god to rest his kind soul in peace.

  163. Rangappa Says:

have no words to express my grief, only thing i can say is , we lost our great singer and actor Dr Rajkumar. He was a real pride of karnataka

  164. Arjun Says:

Dr Rajkumar will be remembered for as long as today’s generations are alive. And even beyond, we might say. A great man. More importantly, a humble man. Never one to venture into the “I-Me-Myself” world of politics. Not a scandal against his name. Even when he was kidnapped by Veerappan, though there was a lot of name-throwing and blaming going on, not a single word was spoken against him. Such was his blemishless character. He will live on.

However, the violence being shown on TV is truly deplorable. They’re burning buses and beating up policemen and others needlessly. Women and children are in the crowds there and they’re being forced to run and hide as rampaging mobs attack them. True fans of the great man, the ones he always used to address as ‘nanna abhimani devarugalu,’ would respect and emulate his peaceful and loving nature and pay their respects to him and his legacy in a non-destructive manner.

Dr Rajkumar. Man, myth, legend. Sir….no, no, Annavre, you are immortal.

  165. sridevi Says:

    some people die…
others live in the hearts like dr raj

  166. Arut Says:

I am sure Dr Raj would have lived for many many years to come but for the veerappan issue. For a person like Dr. Raj who never had any bad habits and practised Yoga regularly this was too early to happen.

May his Soul rest in peace.

Lastly, my sincere request not to address the non-sense comments as that of Non-Kannadigas. It may be more appropriate to address them as Non-Bangaloreans. Because every Banglorean irrespective of being Kannadiga or Non-Kannadiga will know what a Great Legend Dr Raj was. Each one will miss him and greave the loss equally.

  167. rajesh Says:

I guess i will have to agree to the above thoughts. I am a non kannadiga nad have been in Bangalore for the last 5 years. Everybody loves this man and sometimes i used to wonder how can all this be possible? Even in IT industry, wehre there is a more cosmo culture, people respect him.It is a sad day indeed for everybody

  168. Mohammed Ilyas Says:

Real Sad day in Bangalore. I can very well imagine sitting here in Germany the way would be happening in Karnataka and how all Kannadigas would be mourning their departed anna.

I just cannot do any work here, though I am supposed to give final touches to my report. My mental peace is disturbed. Dr. Raj, Your loss is just unbearable.

Kick out all non-kannadigas and the likes of NRN of Infosys who spoilt Kannada and Karnataka culture.

  169. JobMilan Says:

Dr Raj Kumar symbolizes the true simplicity, down to earth nature of Kannadiga.
It is great loss, I can feel the pain though I am a “non-kannadiga”.Karnataka and Bangalore has given more value and meaning to my life than my home state Orissa.

I liked Kannadiga people so much that I learned kannada as the only Indian language I know apart from my mother tongue.

May God Rest The Kannadiga Idol Raj Kumar in peace.

  170. Nagaraj Paduvare Says:

    Hi,

I am in the UK now and got to know abt this unfortunate demise of Annavru of Karnataka…a man whom words will fail to express the greatness…..Dr.Raj.
He was the One and Only Super star of Kannada cinema who held sway for such a long time and was the Kannadiga answer to Andhras NTR or Tamil Nads MGR.
As humans we all have to leave this world and so has this great legend, but his memory will stay on!

  171. jay subramanyam Says:

Hailing from Lucknow, I spent 5 years of my life in Bangalore studying engineering from 1985 to 1990. During the period, the one thing that remained unchanged was the aura, the mass appeal and the evergreen persona of Dr. Rajkumar. Humble in bearing, he was a demi-God and literally worshipped by the cine-goers. It was a common sight to see his huge, life-size cut outs in virtually every street corner. He was like a binding, cosmic force for the people of Karnataka.

Today, I can well imagine the plight of Kannadigas, who have truly been orphaned.

May God bless the departed soul. Dr. Rajkumar was a legend, in every sense of the word.

  172. Abhimaani Says:

This piece is written beautifully. Being from bangalore, I think I can never explain to anybody the admiration that everybody holds for this simple, humble, decent man. Thanks for making it a little easier for me to explain to people what Dr. Rajkumar was about.

  173. parimala rotti Says:

He was a great man, even though he fathered many bastards like vinod raj (leelavathi’s son) and actress bharti vishuvardhan had 2 miscarriages from rajkumar.

  174. Sriranga Rao Says:

We lost a family member. Thats what I am feeling now. When ever we talk about kannada ANNAVRU has to come into that. He was almost synonym for kannada. Annavara athmakke santhy sigaly yendu devarally prarthisutheene.
    Sri

  175. Arun Says:

ANNAVARU was sun in morining and moon in nights for kannada, and non kannidagas we dont have to explain u how great he was, if u are not hurted with his dismissal but with our expressions then v are very sorry for u, U dont deserve to stay in our state, RAJANNA WE ALL WILL MISS U V V V V BADLY, u r simply superb, u gave kannidigas a v good identity.we love u , we miss u.
    Arun.V.Reddy.

  176. ramjy Says:

My late grandmother was a huge fan of Dr.Raj to the extent that she would
give a running commentry of the stories when his movies were on TV.
The roles he donned were/are till today liked and enjoyed by one and all.
It was truly a golden era of Kannada cinema. And what a gift this
Nata Sarvobhoma has given all of us Kannadigas. His contribution towards Kannada,Karnataka and cinema are exemplary.
The best tribute to this Bangarada Manushya would be to develop
Kannada Bhashabhimana and uphold our Kannada culture.

And to all outsiders in our Karnataka-We welcome Both U and ur culture.
That is the Greatness of our people.Be grateful.Honour our Land,Language,Culture & Generosity. Its appalling to see a lot amongst these
    outsiders are abusing this.

  177. rashmi Says:

Its a great loss to kannadigas.he was a great man who practiced wat he preached.he’s a legend.there are no words to express my grief.
im shocked to hear the plight of bangalore today.why are people disrespecting Dr.Rajkumar by resorting to violence?he always spoke to his fans to be peaceful n was against violence.this is mob mentality.everyone is mourning but that doesnt mean we have to kill each other.
everyone has something good to say about annavaru except a few pathetic sadists people like parimala rotti and yogi who have no gratitude wat our land has offered them.
let his soul rest in peace

  178. Ravi Says:

The decency of average kannadiga was very evident today in bangalore, what a mob frenzy, shooting, killing. Amidst these decent kannadigas, Mr. Rajkumar was an exception. How he managed to be an exception among these uncivilised is indeed a 8th wonder. Time every kannadiga learns!

  179. Thimma Says:

Well said Ravi, the garb under which the kannadigas hide - decency, decorum, openess all have been exposed today - not that they were not exposed before, but today it has been exposed before many cameras. Let the kannadigas not claim any special status - they are no bet
