Is'nt the question about how much can you accomodate??

Don't we see this trend in bigger cities of the states than the smaller cities. In a smaller city like Mysore we are more than happy to attend to any guest in their language. We go out of our way to help them utmost we can.

If you come to a bigger city like Bangalore we cannot tolerate outsiders anymore. When we started off about 15 years back people in Bangalore were like people from Mysore very accomodative but being accomodative became a requirement and not a courtesy anymore and visitors totally forgot that they are in a land where there are locals and need to respect the same. If you go to 9th Block Jayanagar and talk to a vegetable vendor in kannada they will ignore you or show little interest in you. I have also heard you will get better rates if you speak in Tamil. If I insist on talking in kannada Am I Parochialistic??

As Indians we all unite when we get out of the county. But the same does not happen when in our own country. This is true with every person around the world not only us indians. I am sure Americans will not tolerate Indians if we do not blend into their culture and their values even though America is a land of immigrants.

I think only solution to this problem is develop multiple cities at a time and do not beeline to one city at one time. Ofcourse politicians will never let that happen.

Ragpicker,

I am a Kannadiga too and have travelled extensively in the North. My observation was that if you do not know Hindi, you are discriminated...plain and simple. Look at the statments of Lalu Yadav today on what he has said about reservations for locals.

The discrimination was not started by us. In fact Kannadiga's were always accomodating but now it has become a question of their own survival in their own state and hence the precaution.

As the saying goes...Good fence makes good neighbours

systematically kannadigas are denied employment inspite of merit. there is a conspiracy of COW-BELT politicians to see to that kannada, kannadigas should be made to suffer and more and more migration of BHAIYYAS into bengaluru should happen.
now a mysuru -ajmer train is announced.

>> So stop this crap.... pay attention to your own States instead of leeching and doing piggy back....>>

For your kind information, I am a Kannadiga, born in Karnataka, living in Mysore since the past 30 years, have worked all over India, never faced any discrimination though my knowledge of Hindi is poor. If a fellow Indian comes from UP or Bihar and there is no reverse migration, it is because job opportunities are less in those States. And reverse migration is not something that is "allowed" or "banned". It is inherent right of every Indian to travel where ever he wishes to and work.

To state that all jobs should be given only to locals smacks of chauvinism of the worst kind. Please come out of your hermitcally sealed cocoon and be accomodating. That is a true Kannadiga trait. In case someone considers this is a sign of weakness, it is their problem. But should we stoop low so as to brazenly discriminate people on the basis of their region of origin, the language they speak and the culture they practice ?

The hatred being spewed against fellow Indians reminds me of the tribal feud between the Hutus and the Tutsis in Rwanda when in a span of 100 days - between April 9 1994 to July 16 1994 - about 1.3 million people were massacred on precisely these issues. And the world stood by and watched.

INDIAN NATIONAL's "They came first... I did not speak up.." is apt under the conditions.

>>And as for mass migration from different states like Bihar and UP, well… as an Indian I have as much right as anybody to settle and work where ever I want… India is as much as my father’s property as yours.’
>>

Is the reverse immigration and settlement allowed in UP/Bihar and will the southies able to settle comfortably and earn a living in these states? I doubt it...it is almost impossible to survive in UP and Bihar if you do not know Hindi. In fact you might be ill-treated also for being a "Madrasi".

So stop this crap about having the right to settle anywhere in India etc. It is not a one way street. Moreover, pay some attention to developing your own states instead of leeching and doing piggy back on the southern states.

_
Yesterday I had to visit Mysore and I was trying to catch an auto from Indian Express to Railway Station at 6AM.

I found an auto. To my surprise the driver looked like an UP guy. I asked, 'station ge barthira?'. He said, 'stasionnn, 40'. A northie auto driver in Bangalore ?! A first for me. I said, 'ippathu'. He looked blank and I had to search another auto.

In the station, I felt like having a coffee and went a bru coffee booth. He gave me coffee and it was Rs 5. I asked, 'iinoorige change ideya?'. He was blank. I asked again and then flashed the 500 rupee note. He said, 'no change'. This guy looked like a Tam/Mallu and he knew zilch of Kannada. I gave him 5 rupee coin and boarded the train.

Kannada fans want Kannadigas to speak in Kannada, atleast in Karnataka. In Bangalore, even if you speak in Kannada, there won't be anybody to respond.

ragpicker,

'And as for mass migration from different states like Bihar and UP, well… as an Indian I have as much right as anybody to settle and work where ever I want… India is as much as my father’s property as yours.'

Yep, exactly the attitude expected which will feed the fire.

Problem is some fathers have too many children since the law doesn't forbid it and the government doesn't discourage it. There is the right to move anywhere which is fine, but no duty to reproduce with thought for the future natural resources around you, which for some reason our founding fathers forgot to put in the constitution.

Actually people like you need to grow up and realise that this is a growing problem - and the solution doesn't lie in hiding behind one right, while conveniently skirting the bigger issue. And then take the necessary steps to curb the problem.

So the the often-quoted poem "...They came for....
has been given an Indian twist but with a communal tinge in the tail. This is how all sectarian conflicts end up. Remember Nellie in Assam in 1982 ? It began as an anti-foreigner purge during the Assam agitation and was initially directed against the Bengalis but soon took an anti-Muslim turn... And as for mass migration from different states like Bihar and UP, well... as an Indian I have as much right as anybody to settle and work where ever I want... India is as much as my father's property as yours. People need to grow up.

"Why this mass migration from states like UP/BIhar??"

Each family has 5 children. Each of these 5 children have 5 children. And so it goes on. In 3 or 4 generations, they exhaust all the resources around them and most are be forced to migrate elsewhere. Where they take their strength in numbers.

Its the same with all living creatures - rats or humans.

And that Indian twist about the oft quoted poem:

They came first for the Punjabis,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Punjabi.

Then they came for the Assamese,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Assamese.

Then they came for the Marathis,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Marathi.

Then they came for the Kannadigas,
and I didn’t speak up because I was a Kannadiga.

Then they came for me,
and by that time no one was left to speak up for me.

And eventually the whole place was overrun by the ones who didn't believe in family planning.

The rabid and the virulent hate being spewed against some communities by "educated"doctors and echoed by a few others on this site underlines the deep-rooted animosity among a section of our people. If the likes of KRV in Karnataka, Raj Thackeray in Maharasthra etc are not crushed and allowed to go scott free then rest assured India will be the scene of ethnic cleansing in the future and join the league of Rwanda, Uganda, Congo, Darfur....And not the G-8 or the likes that meet at Davos that most dream of.

The media including Churumuri has not helped matters either by raking up North Vs South non-issues while Biharis have been specifically described by the timmas of this world as pain in the "ass" (sick)...

Pathetic people who need to grow up, get some dose of Indian history and its culture and outgrow their narrow and provincial outlook and develop a breadth of vision that will make them .And those who sympathize with the goons of Raj Thackeray need to remember, his father's outfit Shiva Sena had targetted "Madrasis", Muslims and now North Indians.

And those who endorse the sectarian violence and applaud the hammering of Bhaiyas need to recall and internalize this verse reckoned to have been penned by Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the silence and thus the acquiescence of German and world intellectuals following the Nazi rise to power and the purging of their chosen targets, group after group:

They came first for the Communists,
    and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

Then they came for the Jews,
    and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
    and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.

    Then they came for me,
and by that time no one was left to speak up for me.

Perhaps it could be revised to suit the Indian conditions.

If the likes of KRV in Karnataka, Raj Thackeray in Maharasthra etc are not crushed and allowed to go scott free then rest assured India will be the scene of ethnic cleansing in the future and join the league of Rwanda, Uganda, Congo, Darfur….And not the G-8 or the likes that meet at Davos that most dream of.

The media including Churumuri has not helped matters either by raking up North Vs South non-issues while Biharis have been specifically described by the timmas of this world as pain in the “ass” (sick)…

Pathetic people who need to grow up, get some dose of Indian history and its culture and outgrow their narrow and provincial outlook and develop a breadth of vision that will make them .And those who sympathize with the goons of Raj Thackeray need to remember, his father’s outfit Shiva Sena had targetted “Madrasis”, Muslims and now North Indians.

They came first for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant.

    Then they came for me,
and by that time no one was left to speak up for me.

Perhaps it could be revised to suit the Indian conditions.

I think the media, dominated by NIs, is blowing this out of proportions. Apprehensions of Marathis/Kannadigas are justified. These cant be addressed by repeating the story of some taxi driver being beaten up by hooligans ad nauseum

I was surprised to find myself empathizing with Raj Thackeray. The devil in me really relished seeing those images of a pink T-shirt clad goonda hitting the hapless taxi driver. I admonished myself, but at a deeper level, I relished it. After a few minutes of munching on the mindless media-fed frenzy fodder, when I dug still deeper, I saw that these offshoots of hate-politics are nothing but the proverbial snake trio trying to out-gulp the adjacent one, making an eternal circle.

We are in the cauldron. Love, hate, jealousy, richness, poverty, amazing success stories, doom all are just elements of a vibrant society such as Mumbai. Bengaluru is becoming a Mumbai. Some say its good, some resent it. Can't help though. We are what we shit. So, I think we deserve such an event, framed well by the profiteering media, gleefully latching onto the expert opinion bandwagon.
