In Bangalore, there are reporters (not all cubs, mind you) who quiver at the prospect of a “H.D. Deve Gowda assignment”; so sick and scared they are of the arched eyebrows, the permanent scowl, and the fulmination of the humble farmer. The newspapers are too polite to report it, but when he gets real irritated, the former prime minister is not loathe to using the kind of language that, well, a former prime minister should not be using.
But Deve Gowda can also be extremely charming when the need arises. With the poll bells about to toll, that need has arisen. In a lovely conversation dripping with desi sarcasm with the editorial staff of the Indian Express, Delhi, Deve Gowda admits that he has not had a very good relationship with the media. Which is why it has consistently projected him in poor light as “anti-development” and a hindrance to Karnataka for the last six years.
“I am a blunt fellow, and maybe that’s the reason. When I resigned from Ramakrishna Hegde’s government, he asked me why. I told him there was no need to discuss past events. Then he said, “You must know your weakness: you not only tell the truth, but the naked truth. That is going to harm your career. You must change your attitude…. I say what I think is right or wrong. I can’t help it if it hurts people.
“I must accept that I have failed to cultivate the media at the national level. I tried but I lacked the experience, with only a state-level political career of 40 years behind me before I came to the Centre. To cultivate the national media was a new assignment for me. The media was not against me; it was just my misfortune.”
Deve Gowda gives a rare insight into his all-too-frequent visits to temples across the country, and his deep and abiding faith in astrology, and reveals why the cameras always caught him with his eyes closed, even when he was prime minister.
# “My father got my astrological chart written up 74 years ago. This was because my father’s first wife and his three children died in one week. I was his first son from his second wife and he was worried about my life.”
# “[When] Jyoti Basu suggested my name for PM, I folded my hands, I cried, I told him you have 18 years’ experience and I have only 18 months, I have not even travelled through the entire country. That evening, I went home and told my wife. As for me, I went to sleep.”
# “I never used to sleep. But you must appreciate that I work 18-20 hours a day. When there is a bright light, my eyes itch because I am a diabetic. So I just close my eyes. And the cameras are very sharp to catch me at that time.”
In the exchange of ideas, Deve Gowda also reveals why he was at daggers drawn with Infosys’ chief mentor N.R. Narayana Murthy:
“Narayana Murthy has brought name and fame to the IT sector in my home state. But we have a comprehensive Land Reforms Bill, which states that not an inch of land can be given for a non-agricultural purposes unless you amend the Bill to make provisions for industrial purposes. That’s why my officers were unable to clear his requests. Then I introduced an amendment. I earmarked a certain portion of land for the IT industry, including for Narayana Murthy. But I did say that in any project submitted to the government, either by domestic or foreign investors, the project, the nature of the project, its employment potential, all these aspects have to be assessed by a team of officers headed by the chief secretary before the cabinet will clear it. That is the system I had adopted.
“Narayana Murthy had applied for approximately 2,000 acres in different parts of the state. There are 1,600 IT companies in Bangalore and even a company like Wipro, a stalwart of the IT sector, had not taken more than 50 acres. I wanted to know why Murthy wanted over 2,000 acres. There is no personal enmity, but this was poor people’s land and they received meagre compensation for their land.”

How does it concern Deve Gowda 50 or 2000? Oh yeah we know.

Calling this villainous blot a dog or a fox is an insult to animals. The word “filth” easily comes to mind. Nothing he says in the interview is worth a comment.
Why does Churumuri want to be part of an attempt to rehabilitate him or keep him in the limelight? That is the job of the likes of Y. S. V. Dutta.

Devegowda is a phenomenon in Karnataka politics. One characteristic feature of his personality is that he is deliberate vague in his public pronouncements and that what he says he does not mean at all. Therefore his public pronouncements have to be taken with a pinch of salt. He is in the habit of shedding crocodile tears as and when it suits him. What he has said in a chat with the Indian Express Newdelhi belongs to this genre.
Secondly he is insufferable when in power and pitiable out of power. And the tone and tenor of his prounouncements depends on which side of he power he is. If he sounds nasty, it means he is in power. If he is commiserating for sympahy, the reason is obvious. He is out of power and wants to create sympathy which should help him to climb the ladder of power. At the moment everybody knows that he is down and faces the difficult challenge of his public career to put his own party which has turned out to be party of the father and sons back into the political pedestal.
About his treatment of journalists in general. Devegowda has a thorough contempt towards everybody who comes in his way. And the journalists in a way are responsible for the contemptuous treatment they receive from him. For Gowda knows the weakness of the journalists for seeking favours from those authority and after obliging them, he starts treating them shabbily and scrirbes have no guts to hit back even when he is totally nasty in his pronouncements. In the entire tribe of journalists in Karnataka except one or two journalists, who are fortunately remain out of Bangalore, no body dares to put direct questions to Devegowda give him back in the same coin.

Before we bury the topic, could someone tell me exactly what sayings/words of Gowda the self-censoring media do not report. Kannadigas need to learn as much as possible about the man who has singlehandedly done so much to destroy the state and its interests.

how many acres does the Gowda family own? I am sure it is in 100s. Which is more dangerous? A political family owning (through non-transparent methods) 100s of acres of land or an Indian multinational trying to get 2000 acres (at least through transaprent means)? By now it is very clear that Churmuri spices up anything against Infosys. May be for the right reasons, but this story’s headline will be complete only with the figures on the extent of of the Gowdas’ empire

then why is he not using “Karunanidhi brand” goggles?

An unusual ‘Ragi to Riches’ story told by Dirty Devegowda himself! The man is such a liar, he will blame every body except himself. What a string of amusing and hilarious lies! Here is the man who became the PM of India with so little effort. And he continued to conduct himself with the same native cunning of a local civil works contractor. No wonder he is crying out aloud, “Please respect me! I was after all a PM of this country! Give me some respect.” And the people don’t respect him because he did not any good either for the country or the State. So he remains a perennial ‘Chemical Ali’ claiming Utopian deeds and false ideology. When his peers speak of his native cunning he deftly deflects them into ‘virtues’ that can hardly be associated with a man who is more slippery than a well-oiled snake.

devegowda has been away from media glare for many days , he has remained silent amongst these chest-thumping, self-glorifying ,ding-dong america return politicians. may be he is busy formulating strategies to bring back jd s to power.
just as every one wrote off sachin , he came back with a bang virtually giving slap on the faces of his critics. deve gowda may prove all his critics wrong this time too.
set aside his idiosyncracies, devegowda is a far better leader than s m krishna, yediyurappa types.

Is this again a case of missing out on things in our desperate hatred of something obviously devious as HDD. I see a difference between a need of 50 acres and 2000 acres in two corporate entities that essentially market the same products ( if those are the right terms to use). There are many defenders of the IT industry on this blog- I wonder if there are defenders of objectivity as well.

Deve gowda may have thousands of acres of land from ill gotten money, but how does that absolve NRN from what he has been doing?(i.e demanding 100s of acres without justification and blackmailing that he would pack off from karnataka? ) Gowda may be Marcos but that doesnt make NRN a Gandhi

No doubt NRN is much better than Gowda ( need we even say this ). but does that mean he has rights to land or to oppose him is stupid. in this case, let us not shoot the message in our enthu to shoot the messenger.
let infy buy land at market rates. no need to govt intervention for providing housing to northies.

Inscrutable contempt for Gowda stemming from an innate racist mentality has meant that the likes of Kheny and NRN and S M Krishna and D Kay Shi have gotten away with murder and that has inflicted more harm on Ktaka than Gowda ever can.

2000 acres in Karnataka is not all. In many states Infosys got hundreds of acres allotted to itself for a pittance. Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Bhubhaneswar, Jaipur… the list goes on. The only ones who asked them to purchase from the market are West Bengal and Karnataka.
It is sad that we bring this obnoxious weed, Deve Gowda, everytime we discuss Infosys land grab. Can anyone tell me if it is even paying property tax like common men do?

The problem with you Dr. Ramesh, is that you blindly, unquestioningly support any criminal/hoologan/liar IF he happens to be Kannadiga. I am a Kannadiga too, but Deve Gowda and his son will never ever recieve my support, for several different reasons, already mentioned in various comments above.
You will support the Dandupalya gang or a band of robbers if they are kannadigas. Really.. do you ask your patients’ mother tongue before you begin diagnosis? I suppose you would do that too..
