By churumuri

With just four days to go for the first phase of polling in the 2008 Karnataka Elections, there is now a buffet of opinion polls, pre-poll surveys, internal surveys, to pick and choose from depending on your political taste:

CNN-INN-Deccan Herald: Congress 114, BJP 60, JDS 37

The Week: Congress 89-97, BJP 83-91, JDS 13-21, others 19-27.

DRS-INX News: BJP 130, Congress 65, JDS 30-45

BJP internal survey: BJP 119-129, Congress 60, JDS <20

Anglo-Indian Unity Centre: Congress 46 per cent, BJP 39 per cent, JDS 6 per cent

Kannada Prabha-Suvarna News (first phase): Congress 43-44, BJP 22, JDS 20

  3. Bhamy V Shenoy Says:

We Indians have well deserved reputation as outstanding statisticians. Looks like these random numbers generated by different polls will tarnish our image. What a pity.

Where are our well trained statisticians? Or is there a quota for taking surveys also?

  4. Alok Says:

    To quote a famous movie:

    “[They] can’t handle the truth”

the truth here being that it is virtually impossible to predict an election in India given the size of the constituencies and the difficulty of getting anything like a representative sample size. That itself should be enough for people to stop pushing half baked statistics, dressing it up with a little mumbo-jumbo and serving it up as “psephology”.

  5. pragmatic Says:

man…these polls are driving me nuts!

  6. desi homosapien Says:

The DRX-INS survey has given BJP more than even its “internal” survey. The internal survey of any party reflects the “best case” scenario harboured by political parties.

Will BJP get more seats than it best expected or will the DRX-INS’ credibility plummet ?

The Congress clearly appears to be winning Karnataka given its wide support base.

  7. Not A Witty Nick Says:

    desi homosapien,

and your comment is an index of your credibility? :D

The Congress clearly appears to be winning Karnataka given its wide support base.

Why not! They had their trusted foot soldier governing the state and had their men in EC to draw the constituencies in their favour… why not!
