After all, an airport doesn’t open/close every day

Change is the only constant in life. And, last night, as the first Air India flight landed at the gleaming new Bangalore International Airport at Devanahalli, beaming passengers were welcomed with flowers and bouquets (top) not by touts and auto drivers.

Meanwhile, at the HAL airport at the other end of the City, a wistful young Muslim family got off from their two-wheeler on the ring road (middle) to catch sight of one of the last flights to land at a landmark that was but no longer is.

And somewhere in between the past and the future, the self-appointed soldiers of the land (below) were bringing further glory to Karnataka and Kannadigas by unashamedly turning the naming of the airport into a caste issue, Balagangadharanath “swamiji” was threatening an “anahutha” (disaster) if the name of Kempe Gowda wasn’t slapped on to the new airport.

***

The new airport saw the usual teething troubles in its first few hours. A flight that was supposed to land didn’t, and a flight that wasn’t supposed to, did. And the queues were still there as passengers waited to board a flight to Singapore (top).

But for the Kingfisher cabin crew it was a real breeze entering the new airport without having to wade through autos, motorycles, cars, cargo vans, taxis, luggage carts, passengers, visitors, relatives and sometimes whole villages (bottom, left). And as the first flight landed, BIAL chief Albert Bruner welcomed the captain and in-flight crew (bottom, right).

Who are these Morons to decide the name of the Airport. There are several names floating around and KRV and its Goons cant predecide on the Name. The VOKKALIGA Centric Self Styled Godman warning of consequences if the Name Kempe Gowda is not approved is the icing on the cake.He must be sent to parapanaa agrahara for making provocative statements.

Decision on the naming has to be made based on consensus not being dictated by a few lumpen elements in society. If these demands are accepted what stops them from asking all Companies / Banks / Schools to be renamed based on some leader ??

What next ? Some Muslim organisation rooting for Tipu or warning of terrorist attacks or some Lingayat / SC/ St / Dalit Leaders coming up with names of their leaders. Some drastic action is called for IMMEDIATELY to stop this ROT.

  2. Vitlan Potli Says:

What is this “anahutha ” that this esteemed balangochi swamiji threatening about? pray please enlighten us all

  3. Chintaka Says:

Had Ka Ra Ve fought for the job reservation for kannadigas in the new airport they would have got support from all quarters.

Had Ka Ra Ve fought for the sake of taxi operators, they would have got support from all quarters.

Atleast had Ka Ra Ve insisted that naming of the airport on some logical and rational basis, it would have got support from all quarters.

Fact of the matter is this is an outfit headed by a gowda and wants the airport to be named after another gowda. Thank god they didnt insist on naming this after Deve Gowda. To that extent im thankful for this outfit.

If this madness of naming everything after Kempe Gowda doesnt end, then there might come a day when demand will be made to name even vidhana soudha as kempe gowda soudha!!!!

  4. nijavaada Says:

At the bottom of all this pomp and show of talk about this naming business on almost every page that deals with Karnataka & India on the web, I feel a simple question stands unanswered even today.

What is the harm of naming the BIA as KIA, Bengaluru?
There was a proposal in front of the central govt. to give the airport the name KIA, about an year or more ago. The minister – Mr. Patel, cleanly rejected the name and said it isnt “international enough”!! Then what is? Bruner? Gandhi? Tipu? No. We all know that Tipu was himself a son of a man who “came” into this land and then ruled. So were the descendants of Babur. Although we have great respect for Akbar and his families in our text books, we dont have as much reverence paid to him while naming monuments and public places of interest. Not as much as some other individuals who have “been” here..

And as the question arises immediately, why not Sir MV? But clearly one needs to notice that this matter is only about Bengaluru, and not the entire state as a whole – because Sir MV is someone the entire state can relate to in one way or the other, whereas Kempegowda is a man only people who have been “here” in Bengaluru and its surroundings can relate to. He originally ruled out of Yelahanka too, sometime during his regime.

So, while there are so many affirmative remarks supporting the positives of naming a structure as important as the BIA after this man’s name, it really should make no sense debating it because to all of us Bengaluru and Kempegowda essentially are synonymous! So why not give it a name that’ll invoke far more renewed interest across the world (which we expect will travel through this airport sooner than later) than the already widespread name of Bengaluru. The history of this splendid city is immediately exposed to the entire world’s perusal and thereby understanding what Bengaluru really was/is.

And coming to churumuri’s remark about the “unashamed act” – it is but natural for a guy standing out there inside the new branded airport taking photos of “beautiful scenes” of invasion happening over Kannada to feel another guy’s desperate attempts (although in vain) at saving that invasion from happening even while he is, unlawfully though, prevented from entering the battlefield where this invasion is taking place..

What a pity, there’s hardly a soul here that thinks this exclusion of fair-fighters of invasion from the real picture is indeed the shameless act being enacted now.

  5. Hiker Says:

KRV should fight for jobs for locals at the BIA rather than fight over naming of BIA.

  6. subbulakshmi Says:

like Delhi has a Indira Gandhi airport and Mumbai has Chatrapathi Shivaji airport and kolkota has a subhashchandra Bose airport why cant bangalore have kempe gowda airport? not that Bangalore international airport is bad. if there is someone asking for kempe gowda why not give it to them? or are you against it just because they are asking for it?

  7. N Says:

The airport should be named as Hardanahalli Doddegowda Devegowda International Airport – no short forms allowed. For all that he has done for Bangalore, surely, this much can be done?

  8. nijavaada Says:

Lets keep sarcasms away for sometime. I am sure we all have these skills packed tight in our bags. Lets get serious and lets all become serious Bengaloorigas and talk about this.
Otherwise, this place is just another pastime – which churumuri wants or not to happen, is of course left to the churumuri maker..

  9. oochara Says:

    @NIJAVAADI

i support you in total earnest. You have definitely seen the first light of this argument. Karnataka or even Bengaluru Airport is great. However, the Kempe Gowda isn’t any short to great even.

    @ THE REST

The CAUSE here is bigger than CASTE. Churumuri makes a shockingly libelous statement: “unashamedly turning the naming of the airport into a caste issue, Balagangadharanath “swamiji” was threatening an “anahutha” (disaster)”. And hence upping itself on the list of skullduggery-induced inexperienced writers!

What in dickens does caste have to do with B Swamiji’s entree? Yes he represents a caste and so the defence comes first as a reflex. But isnt it true that when your house is on fire, you will be the first one to go out and call for help? Now you dont go banging on the doors of your caste people alone to save your burning deck. And that is what the action of swamiji indicates; it is just an SOS call invoking other mutts and kannadigas (irrespective of castes to support).

Hell with the CASTES, folks. I’m solely interested in the person, Kempe Gowda, alone!!! Without having to use his last name, that i believe is somehow deriding and digressing from the whole contribution of that person, KEMPE is the quintessential architect of bendakalooru. KEMPE’s vision, ambition for a city for the sake of its Prajas (irrespective of who it would be) is commendable. One has to live outside to definitely relive the experience of this beautiful bengaluru’s boulevards. And yes, with total concurrence with Nijavaadi, bengaluru is synonymous with KEMPE.
For me, no one stands more for Bengaluru as much as KEMPE. For me, it is about a person more than his caste. For me, I should confess, it is about the state first than its extraordinary citizen. And so KEMPE might come fourth to India, Karnataka, Bengaluru—if you get my order of seeing things.

Praful Patel who thinks it’s not “international enough” to have names like Karnataka or even Kempe Gowda, Basavanna or Mokshagundam Visvesvarayya (if asked to comment), I would suggest to take a leaf from the Italians or French. He would go bonkers to call himself New Yorker than a Delhiwalla.

  12. Bhamy V Shenoy Says:

This may be an ideal time to generate names to find out who has done maximum difference (in terms of contributing to the maximum good of the state) to Karnataka.

Of the names suggested Sir MV stands out the most. What has Tippu done which is making any difference today to Karnataka? We see the impact of vision of Sir MV even today.

We can easily forget HD Deve Gowda though as an accidental PM of India. But for the enormous wealth he has accumulated and dirty, unprincipled, and outright caste politics he is continuing to play we can certainly forget.

We can also think of one of the constitution writers from Karnataka, Benegal Shiva Rao. It is india’s constitution with all its faults (it must be faulty when it has been amnded more than 100 times) has kept us as a nation and its writer has indeed palyed a great role.

None of the past or current political leaders from Karnataka had a great impact at Karnataka or national level. One would have come close would have been Nijalingappa. But he is alreday a foot note to history having palyed some role in the break up of congress party.

Of the saints, poets and authors, Purandara Das can be considered and so also Kumar Vyas. These names may not be internationally known (well Shivaji or Subhashchadra Bose are also not known for that matter).

    How about some more names?

Caste lobbying !!! I’m surprised when the Lingayats did the same things like protesting in the public like little kids for some books made me wonder if that book on Basavanna was really a true story and as for as the Brahmins its already been proved in the past/present they are more caste centric/favouritists than any others. Why don’t you see two Brahmins fighting in politics ,anywhere like the others its just that they are not broad minded and secular,so why the bias ??

  15. Gokulam 3rd Stage Says:

What will KRV do when they find out that Kempe Gowda’s court language was Telugu and not Kannada? He even authored “Ganga Gouri Sallapamu”, a Telugu Yakshagana!

  16. nijavaada Says:

    @ Gokulam 3rd Stg,
KRV will indeed feel proud that there could be places in Andhra where admirers of KGowda reside! That is what it’ll do because we’ll know, and KRV knows better, what KGowda meant for Bengalooru and for its people – Kannadigas i.e.

Building controversies is easy, dude! But realising that the truth is but one, and only one is difficult.

In fact a better answer to your question would be – I’d call a Reddy guy in some corner of Bengalooru who speaks fluent Kannada (apart from his Telugu) and makes his living in Bengalooru by doing so, a far mature Kannadiga than you – a person who has such basic doubts about things that actually matter.

  17. Ambika Says:

It is insane to think about other names than “KEMPEGOWDA”. We can be greatful to the farmers for sacrifcing their land and livelihood for the development of Bangalore.

    See the below link.

    http://www.hindu.com/2008/05/23/stories/2008052361100300.htm

We just have to move on to help them by spending less time for keeping the name for the airport which means provide them some basic job etc.,.

  18. Hiker Says:

    Amibka,

Please give us some gyaan as to why it is insane to think about names other than “KEMPEGOWDA” for the BIA.

  19. Gokulam 3rd Stage Says:

Nijavaada avare, please be careful as you get off that high horse. It is very easy to falter into a sense of self-importance on the internet; almost always undeserved.

KRV has shown no signs of intelligence so far, and I doubt they would appreciate your attribution of a sophistication to their discrimination. My question was valid considering they claim to promote Kannada/Kannadigas, and want the airport to be named after Kempe Gowda.

  20. nijavaada Says:

    Mr. Gklm,
Please ask yourself what research have you done about KRV and its actions/deeds to comment in that fashion. It is not being personal here, but you seem to be just throwing tantrums in the air, and have nothing in your pocket to open up and display as explanation of your allegation against KRV.

If you find out what all KRV has been doing in the case of BIA alone and if you have what it takes to understand, you’ll realise KRV has been actively pursuing and following up with the big shots at BIAL to procure enough info to understand the proceedings under the carpet in BIAL quarters. And all this is just w.r.t BIAL matter. I can bet you know not even a bit of what KRV’s intelligence has acquired in this regard.

And, for the last time, giving KGowda name to BIA has nothing to do with discrimination, and neither is calling someone a Kannadiga and someone not a Kannadiga discrimination. It is but a description of one’s belonging. And if you’re not proud of what you belong to, you dont belong anywhere.

  21. kotresh Says:

This whole story of how KRV is acting like pro vokkaliga organization is a big lie. Let me remind you about KRV’s other two important demands which everyone here seems to be carefully ignoring
1> Giving employment to the family members of all those poor farmers who have sacrificed their land for the project.
2> Creating kannada maya vaatavarana in the airport. Why have none of the guys here are not writing a single word about these 2 legitimate demands of KRV supporting the sons of the soil??

I definately agree when people say Sir MV should considered for the name of the airport. Sametime, I would like to question the careless statement of relating Narayana Gouda to vokkaliga caste. If Gowda was so inclined about being a vokkaliga. then why would have he faught relentlessly for the following causes?

1> Fighting for group D employment in railways for kannadigas, where lalu’s discrimination against kannadigas was very clearly visible to everyone. You think vokkaligas are the only ones who wanted those group D jobs and hence Narayan Gouda faught for that cause??
2> Belagavi saw a kannada mayor after 18 long years and KRV’s role in that has been appreciated by one and all including our very own Vishweshar bhat in one of his article. Now, do you think KRV faught for this cause, coz Belagavi has huge vokkaligas and hence Narayan gouda wanted to become a hero in belagavi’s vokkaligas (where in reality, not a single vokkaliga exists in belagavi at all !! ) ??
3> KRV has taken an army of 25000 farmers to delhi to stall the Kaveri tribunal judgement from becoming a law and you think KRV did all that coz Kaveri belongs to only Vokkaligas ??
4> KRV staged a huge rally of farmers in hubbali for the quick implementation of Kalasa banduri canal project for drinking water supply for hubbali, gadag areas and do you think they did so, coz some vokkaliga leader told them to do so?

Just the way our Sir MV did all those for all the people of Karnataka, KRV’s legitimate fight is against the injustices meeted out against all kannadigas.

I, myself hailing from khanapur taluk in Belagavi, know how dedicated and committed KRV is about Kannada and Karnataka. Just 5 years back, my uncle in Nippani used to dread about MES goondas and it is KRV which has given the confidence among kannadigas over there to get united and fight for our cause.

  23. Satish Says:

    Hi, Guy ,

The New BIAL Airport (Bengaluru International Airport Limited ) is gateway to Karnataka as whole so It should feature the Name relevant to Kannada and its people’s and not to limited to Bangalore’s founder name of Kempegowda,

I am not against it, but it is not in line of full reflection where entire Karnataka’s Kannadigas can associate with it in Proud as it is his own.

Instead think of Karnataka Founder King Dynasty KADAMBA or The Pride of Karnataka the Vijaynagar’s Dynasty HOYSALA ,

Epic Name : KISHKINDHA used in the ages of Ramayana in describing the area where Load Hanuman Lived is also meaningful than any king or politician name’s.

Due to its black and thick forest and its rich Black soil it is also known as KARUNADU

Its Western Mouth an range or Ghats it is known as Sahyadri which runs from North Karnataka to South is known as BILIGIRI , NILGIRI in South Karnataka

You should consider the riches of Kannada LITRATURE, its Land resources like GOLD Mines , Unique Fabric of this region Mysore SILK just like Basmati Rice.

Knowledge beamers like Kavi SARVAGNYA, Guru BASAVANNA, Kavi DASSA

Modern Literature persons like Dr KUVEMPU , GOKAK, Dr Shivaram Karanth

RIVER’s Name , Heritage name’s are lot to find out . pls help in your suggestion to BIAL.

  25. An Idea Says:

After reading Kanasu’s link, I was thinking if something can be done about it, Lets just start conversing with the staff in kannada in the new airportu . (If you do not know fluent kannada but believe in the ideology talk what ever little you can.) .If possible avoid translating into their language. I do not believe in discriminating others but want the law/language/culture of the locals respected and LISTENED TO. If are not able to manage in only kannada please make sure you fill the whatever relevant feedback form. I believe this is a way to register my protest and let us see if this can do some change to the farmers/locals who have donated their land so that all others make money out of it. I am already thinking of what to say for “aisle”.

  26. vijay Says:

@chintaka, if you want to know what KRV has been protesting for w.r.t BIAL, please refer to these links.

  27. kssomeswara Says:

No one tries to emember Sir M.Visweswariah without whom modern Bangalore was non-existent. It is he who encouraged starting many industries including HAL and also educational institutes like IISc. We Bangaloreans should ever remember his name day in and day out of our life. Except his name no other persons name is fit enough to name the new International Airport. Also, he hails from near by place Muddnahalli in Chickballapur.

  28. Ambika Says:

    hiker,

you could not follow the link, the entire land belongs to Vokkaligas who are now lifeless and Kempegowda is a vokkaliga who is know to all Bangaloreans. The name and the jobs in the same name at least would satisfy the lifeless loosers and they forget their daridra.

    Do you need more explanation!!!

  29. Dr. Sree Reddy Says:

It is petty to say, Kempe Gowda is a Telugu and he is a vokkaliga therefore BIAL should not be named after him.
Normally important buildings, landmarks are named after city’s founder.
He hailed from present Tamil Naadu.
By the way, do you know there is not much difference between Telugu and Kannada, especially in the script.
Regional boundaires based on languages were drawn in order to promote and protect languages. Thus reorganisation of states began in mid 1960’s based on languages. You will be surprised to see there are so many regions interwoven and embedded with different linguistic communities.
In Tamil Naadu you will see many Telugu speakers and Kannada speakers. There are also Marathi speakers.
Kamaraj and Karunanidhi can speak fluent Telugu.
    Jayalalitha speaks fluent Kannada.
In Karnataka, Telugus are the biggest linguistic minority. In Maharashtra, you will see Kannada speakers as the largest linguistic minority.
In Andhra Pradesh, you will see both Kannada speakers and Marathi speakers in equal numbers.
    They are there for centuries.
Sir M. Visweswariah is again a Telugu.
Can you call him a less Kannadiga, because he spoke Telugu at home?
I speak Telugu at home, do you guys want to say I am not a Kannadiga?
Narayana Gowda of KRV is working hard.
People should think before writing comments.
Both Reddy brothers from Bellary were born and brought up Bellary. Both of them speak fluent Kannada.
Ramakrishna Hegde’s daughter Mrs. Mamatha can hardly cut a decent conversation in Kannada!!

  30. Seena Says:

I agree with Dr Reddy …. But some how i am not happy that you proudly included Reddy brothers in this,These two are looting Karnataka( and APs) natural resources…. and making money..
You cannot mention SMV and KG alon with these guys.

  31. Anil Says:

I am a staunch Kannadiga. but let me tell you, we must not make any discrimination between Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. Because, essentially all these are the same ONE Language called Adi Dravida Bhasha. In this part of Dravida Desh, this language (ADI DRAVIDA) is only called Kannada, infact it is called Telugu in the present Andhra Pradesh and it is called Tamil in the present Tamilnadu region and Malayalam in the present Kerala region.

Infact none of these languages can claim that they were born earlier to one another. Because, all these languages are mere styles of the ADI DRAVIDA BHASHA.

It is no different from HINDI spoken in different dialects like Bhojpuri, Avadhi, Mythili, Chambal, Himachali, MArwari etc. Essentially all of it is from Sanskrit.

It is only some people who state that either Tamil or Kannada was born earlier to other languages.

We must live together happily else we will all be routed out.

If we go into the depths of the Language, we will all be shocked to know our identities. We may not even belong to one creed.

    Regards

    Anil, Mysore

  32. అనిల్ రెడ్డి Says:

First things first: There has been no difference or separation between Telugus and Kannadigas since medieval ages. Srii Krishna Devaraya was famous for Telugu as well as Kannada and he had poets of both the languages in his court! Its only after state-reorganization in 1956 that Telugu and Kannada areas were separated, on exactly the same day! We share the same day of formation. When I travel from AP to Karnataka, it is like saying a tearful adieu to “Telugu Talli” and a joyous embracing of “Kannada Talli”.
Let there be freedom of language to be spoken by people. Never force people to talk only one language. People will automatically learn any new language once the need arises,so there is no point in forcing them, Saying “My language is great” is nice, but saying “ONLY my language is great” is arrogance/foolishness. I speak Telugu at home and I come from AP, but consider myself a proud bangalorean rather than Andhraite, because of the love shown by the city towards all people here: south-north-east-west. The identity of bangalore lies in this spirit.
So let the airport be called by any name. Anyway finally the people will use the abbreviation: BIAL!

  33. అనిల్ రెడ్డి Says:

Give me an option I would consider Bangalore being a second capital of Andhra(especially since Hyderabad is facing some serious internal issues with the T-agitation)! It is soooo close to Telugus. In fact many people, especially those from Rayalaseema region would be happy with bangalore as the second capital city of Andhra Pradesh(if it is created out of Telangana)!

  34. Anonymous Guy Says:

    Anil gaaru,
Yeah given a chance, you would make Washington DC, New York or any other city second capital of Andhra Pradesh.
Forcing someone to speak a language comes up when a language is being diminished due to lakhs of others spilling into Bangalore.
The welcoming attitude stops when it comes to self-preservation.
