A. NARAYANA writes from London: Enough and more has been said about the media’s overzealousness in the Padmapriya Bhat case. Maybe for the right reasons.
More than the overreach what also stood exposed was the regressive thinking—and the immaturity of men and women in the media—in their understanding of human lives and relationships.
In some cases, it was not just the media’s drive to sell more copies or clock up more TRPs which seemed to have prompted them to put out what they did.
In question is their very motive.
Consider these:
# “He has got an MA in sociology but what has he chosen to do?” questioned a headline in the Manipal edition of Udayavani, referring to Atul Rao, the aide of Udupi MLA Raghupati Bhat, even when no one knew the facts behind his role in her death.
And Udayavani wrote as if it was an established case of ‘Kidnap’ even after home minister V.S. Acharya‘s own admission that it was a ‘half-kidnap’ case. He is yet to clarify what that ‘half’ really is. What was Udayavani‘s source or motive in pronouncing prematurely that it was a case of kidnap?
# A Kannada Prabha report summarily suggested that it was a murder. On what basis?
#Vijaya Karnataka‘s reporter questioned Padmapriya’s decision to discard “a life in which she had wealth and prestige”. “Idella bekitte (was all this required?)” he asks. How did the reporter know that the woman was happy in her marriage?
# The Hindu, of all the newspapers, found it fit to publish every word that Padmapriya’s mother uttered while grieving in front of her young daughter’s body, that too with the wrong translation from Tulu. These are the words every bereaved parent in such a situation would utter. Should they be published verbatim? Et tu, Hindu?
# Deccan Herald and Praja Vani are sister publications produced in the same building but while the English paper said Atul was an engineering diploma holder who resigned from his government job and did civil contracts, the Kannada paper report said Atul did his MA, continued in his government job and did contracts in his wife’s name. (However, it is also a fact the best matter-of-fact reports were filed by the Delhi bureau of these two newspapers.)
# All Kannada newspapers in their esteemed judgment started addressing Atul in the singular from day one while the police still maintained that he was only a witness and not an accused.
There are many more things that could be said about the media coverage of Padmapriya, its ethics, its calibre and its self-righteousness. But, more importantly, there is something to be said about the role of the State.
From the statements of the police and the home minister, it becomes amply clear that they came to know from the second day, if not the first day itself, that it was a case of strained personal relationships and Padmapriya chose to go to Delhi on her on volition.
If this was the case (and there is nothing on record to suggest otherwise so far), the State had absolutely no role to play except making it clear to the public what it came to know.
Going by the facts of the case known as of today, it is also a case of the State exceeding its limits to save an MLA of the ruling party from what would have been considered in our society a loss of face for him.

They sit and get drunk in the press club and talk dirty. Most of them are obnoxious and happy with their power to wield society. Smugs, they are.
The problem is either newspapers/media are run by journalists themselves or some business houses for which journalism is ancillary unit. Journalism needs media entrepreneurs, the cutthroat type.
Accountability in reporting should be introduced. Perfromance parameter is not which big story one journalist covered and exposed, but how many factual mistake he/she’s made in their stories collectively y-o-y.
Drunk biggies should come out of their inebriatednes and establish a media court, jurisdiction and try each of the journalists be it in any newspaper or beat.
Send out marks card on every journalists performance and accord a A/B/C/D distinctions on the press club notice board.

You dont even have to say all these. It does not matter. People who comment on irrelevant personal matters which they have no idea about are only betraying their level of thinking. They think that there are two standards of morality and behaviour – one for themselves and another for women. Quite like the taliban etc.
Your other statement sums it up: “What else we can expect from the Male dominated Kannadiga society?”

She is no more and her parents don’t know many things what happened between her and her husband. Moreover they don’t want to create confrontation with powerfull politicians. I met Padma akka many times .Very calm and matured and never behaved like the typical politician’s wife even after marriage….Atul was with their family all the time and it looks like Atul’s name was just introduced to divert attention from the actual story. Very sad that those two boys lost their beautiful mom at a very young age.

To top it all see today’s (June 21) Vijaya Karnataka centre page column!!! God, will someone teach a lesson of humility and decency to that columnist.
In the name of asking the right questions he has written something which everyone, mainly the members of the bereaved family, will find extremely embarrassing and uncomfortable to read. Is there any way to disqualify a columnist?
When have the mainstream papers begun to answer or to give clarification to what cheap tabloids choose to publish? This column has done just that and in the process repeated the tabloid stuff.
He ends the column with a series of self-righteous questions to MLA Raghupathi Bhat. Who is this columnist to ask these questions when his paper has not yet presented the clear facts of the case. When have newspapers begun to accept columns written on assumed reality? Is this the restraint that the paper promised a few days ago?
If possible, unravel the mystery which still surrounds the case. Otherwise, have the patience, decency and humility to wait till the things become clear..
Thought this paper would improve after ToI took over. Unfortunately, its ‘lorry dhani’ culture continues
Two things become clear:
The difference between mainstream newspapers and tabloids are disappearing
The difference between reports and editorials are disappearing
both are dangerous trends

Padmapriya seems to have got married at a very young age. Any idea about her education? Both the kids seem to be of the school- going age and she must have had plenty of free time and nothing much to do.Added to that, the less time a public man can give his wife.Truly, a case of an idle mind being the devil’s workshop. The media, esp. TV9, went overboard with sensationalising a private tragedy.

@Narayana, If you had seen TV9 reporting , I am sure you wouldn’t have cared to write about other papers. It was height of sensationalising. They krpt telling ” padma priya mattu avala priyakara Atul”. They reported that she ran way with her lover Atul. They didn’t spare her brothers even when she is dead and asked them about her relationship with Atul. Gosh..TV9 made a complete mess of whole incidents.

Deccan Chronicle ran a page 1 lead story – after Padma’s death – that Atul and Priya were having an affair..
How does DC know this ? Did Padma or Atul tell them ? What business does DC have to say something as damaging as this without adequate proof ? Can they even undo the character assisination they indulged in ?
In this entire episode the actions of Govt were irresponsible while that of media was worse – it combined insensitivity with speculation and sensationalsim.
True, media did ask some relevant questions and kept the govt goof up in arc light..but the amount of damage it did by their utterly unprofessional and rank sensationalsim is shameful

Narayan has finally realised what a bad stock of people journalists are. I wonder why he did not realise this when he was a journalist. Or was that the reason he quit journalism.
But, Narayan has a point. I don’t remember him writing reports that invaded into people’s privacy as long as he was working with Deccan Herald.
Journalists live in a world of assumptions. They give verdicts on many cases long before the courts decide on even admitting petitions. I think we should wind up all the courts in the country and refer the cases to these pompous journalists, who walk the corridors of power as decision-makers.
Journalists in Karnataka tried to make Padmapriya’s case into a la Aarushi case. But, the north India-controlled television media did not allow Padmapriya case to overshadow Aarushi, which is getting more eye-balls than even an Indo-Pak cricket 20-20 match.

You have missed one point. While the media did many things which it should never have done, it did not do something which it could have done. For example:
on the day Padmapriya’s body was brought to Bangalore, DH ran a story which suggested what could have been the last nail on the camel’s back as far as Padmapriya’s decision to end her life was a phone call to her by a former MLA. The report said in this call Padmapriya was told that unless she returned, Atul will be killed. There are many questions about this:
1) Is the report true. If yes, it is a good report and gives a new perspective to the case.
2) It quotes the family members of Padmapriya as source
3) Why DH did not follow it up despite it having a good Delhi bureau?
4) If this was true, that call was responsible for her death more than the media publicity which in any case she would have expected
5) Who was that former MLA who made the call.
6) Details about who called Padmapriya on that fateful day could be easily verified based on the numbers in her mobile or by checking with the mobile company. The police surely have the info. Why DH or anyone is not following this up? Ran out of steam?
7) What is this investigation report from Delhi which IG Southern Range A M Prasad says the state police have been expecting. Haven’t the Delhi police washed their hands off saying it was clear case of suicide
8) Everyone says the case is under investigation. Which case? Missing case? If so, it has already been solved. There is no other complaint or issue before the police. If there was one, then Atul would not have been released. There is a complaint by Raghupathi Bhat now saying Atul had kidnapped Padmapriya and even stolen her jewels. I am sure the police have examined this angle before they decided not to arrest him. So, what is the investigation which the HOme Minister says is under progress
9) Atul said on his return to Mangalore that he would make everything public within two days. Two days are over and why has he not come out with what he has to say? What is it that he has got to say?
10) Finally, if Padmapriya were to choose a destination within Karnataka instead of Delhi, the police version of the story would have been different perhaps.
I agree with Narayan that it is more a case of state’s excesses. Not just that of the media
@at bakedgrainappa
Yes. How could Vishweshwara Bhat, after claiming self-restraint, could allow today’s column ‘Bettale Jagattu’. The self-restraint note said no more will VK probe the private lives of the public figures. But Pratap has done exactly that…

I read the article in Vijaya karnataka today 21-6-08. I think the author has raised some valid points. Does any woman with two small children, whom she adored so much, try to elope with a married man? Is sex so important that she would abandon her two children? Very very unlikely. If she wanted physical contact with someone, she could have easily had it, without eloping or getting into such a mess and finally losing her life. I heard she was a bold lady, as Pratap in VK pointed out, she would have known the risks of running away from home and would never dare do something like that. My gut feeling is that R.Bhat plotted it with Atul. Is it not strange that Atul is in ICU for acidity problem? They all need some time to cook up a story against that innocent girl.

This is what I like about broadcast media, they are always late for editing and early for reporting. That immediacy brings lot of transparency. Everyone becomes one in media’s eyes be it a labourer from haveri or labour minister from Udupi.
Imagine if we only had print, this PP would have suffered being made a maid in her own house or been a ghost story of naxal kidnaps. We would only read what the editors had to say the next day in the newspapers. A lot of cash, caste and class would play in the newspaper offices.

Of course, there are some valid points in Prapath’s article but
1) No mainstream newspaper said she ran away for fun etc……so whom is he clarifying for, TV9 and tabloids….?
2) Why is he assuming that everyone except he bought what TV9 and tabloids said. Does he realise that by writing that stuff he is giving publicity to the very versions which he is up to condemn
3) More importantly, after claiming self-restraint, this column has phrases like ‘Raghupathi Bhattarenu Shreerama Chandrane?’ etc. After expressly clamining that we are not going to interfere in the personal life of the public figures asking this question amounts to gross violation of privacy.
4) Finally read these two:
1) http://kendasampige.com/article.php?id=903
2) http://www.kendasampige.com/article.php?id=880
They make some good observations. They raise some reasonable doubts about the whole episode. They in essence ask some of the valid questions but in a dignified way unlike Prapath Simha’s cheap, pompous and arrogant version…

we have seen lot of comments about how the police and the state mishandled the case, about the “Good news” comment of the home minister and also the ever lasting speculations in the media.
However when we start analyzing the events keeping aside the visual and the print media, things will be a bit clear.
Friday @ 1pm news broke out that a car belonging to the wife of Udupi MLA was found abandoned with clues that might lead to some kind of force. Law enforcement officials start their investigation, all the dignitaries visit the spot. Simultaneously, the media goes wild publishing so many, that the public was taken on a wild ride. Every outlet started their own story attributing to reliable source. However no one has mentioned the so called ‘source’. It looks like the officials came to know about the where about Padma priya by late saturday evening. It was also confirmed that she was OK (apparently she talked to Atul via cell phone) and based on this ocnfirmation, the home minister informed the Media that some clues have been obtained and that a good news will be announce the next day. This was necessiated in order to counter the wild run being carried out by the Media. Also, I think it would not have been appropriate to leak her where about albeit the Media would have swamped her in delhi.
Also since the speculation was that Pradma Priya was kidnapped and her staying alive was in doubt, the home minister might have wanted assure the public that was not the case. Well, no body can read anybody’s mind and it is unfortunate that she later committed suicide. However, having known what we know now, I think it was appropriate for the Home Minister to make that comment.
Now nobody officially confirmed about the Malur, Murdeshwar, darmapuri episodes. However everybody now claim that the Govt had informed them about this. How can anybody blame the Govt for getting carried away by rumors?

PP is dead and Atul has some information. Sure he was the mastermind who fixed up PP in Delhi and all that. However virtuous PP may be she deserted her little kids and I fault her for that. Her husband Bhat may be the most horrid man but the overactive imagination of Atul and PP has proved fatal for PP. Also, being a virtuous woman PP must have felt the real force behind her actions after watching the local Kannada channels. I don’t think anybody’s phone call pushed her to take that extreme step. Even the clumsy attempts at abandoning the car and planting evidence could have come from Atul the bad dude who is conveniently playing the martyr card now!

@Radhika, here is what happened:
PP was forcefully taken to Delhi by her husband’s accomplices. Later the husband (may be with help of his buddy Muthappa Rai) killed her and made it look like suicide. The husband, this time with his another buddy the home minister, closed the case as suicide in the official records.
Why did the husband got her killed? Many girls just ‘adjust’ and get along. PP, after having watched her husband closely, couldn’t come into terms of accepting a crook as husband. She tried to persuade him by non-violence. The husband, fed up with efforts of his wife to reform him, got her away of his way by violent means.
Yeddi is not bothered because he will lose 1 count and go dangerously close to the 113rd mark.

A negative piece of writing in Churumuri. I have seen all the stories covered in the media, especially TV9. Yes, I agree that TV9 has exagerated the news and hyped it. But the day after her death, TV9 coverage was superb. They showd all the documets of the flat, registery, and an interview with the security guard.
Throughout their coverage they had raised several unanswered questions. I had ringed up the tv9 reporter in new delhi. He has a lot of things which went behind the screen and which he can’t share on air through tv9.
Even the same reporter has written a piece on Padmapriya in his blog. There he has asked several questions over her death based on his observatins on spot. Please go through all those questions. If you have the answers to those questions, then please reply.
I have heard many police officers from Mangalore appriciating the TV9 coverage after her death saying that they are really investigating the the incidetn.
