What if KaRaVe started doing this instead of that?

E.R. RAMACHANDRAN writes: That Karnataka is rapidly sliding up the totempole of corruption is no more a surprise to anybody who follows the raids conducted by Lok Ayukta Santosh Hegde and his team, and the booty seized by them and publicised with pornographic detail by the media the following day.

Starting from the lowly peon who lets you in to see ‘sahebru‘, corruption courses all the way up to the very top of our government departments, institutions and organisations—to the “concerned” clerks, section officers, assistant directors, joint directors, managing directors and who-have-you.

Not to put too fine a point on it, corruption seems to have embraced every aspect of life in Karnataka, and become a way of life.

Nobody in namma cheluva naadu is spared, as the latest Transparency International ranking Karnataka on top of the ladder shows.

Strangely, nobody seems bothered either after the initial hoo-ha.

Not the government, not our political parties, not our political leaders.

Not our NGOs, not our good samaritans, not our media.

At least not after a point.

Here’s a thought: what if the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KaRaVe) jumped into the vacuum and decided to redirect its energies to live up to its name—that is of defending Karnataka from the biggest threat facing it, namely corruption?

# What if KaRaVe’s workers and supporters decided to keep an eagle eye on corruption across the State? What if they carried out a Statewide campaign? What if they decided to bat for the common man and woman trying to get things done in government offices? What if they helped the media to expose the corrupt at every level; in every village, town, city and district?

# What if KaRaVe peacefully agitated in front of offices and officers who are stripping those whom they are supposed to serve? What if they peacefully agitated in front of Vidhana Soudha for action against MLAs, ministers, officials, departments making things difficult for the average Kannadiga?

# What if KaRaVe staged a dharna in front of the Chief Minister’s office till such corrupt ministers and officials are sacked, not just cosmetically suspended, even if it means we may not be left with much of a ministry or bureaucracy in the end?

Etcetera.

One is not advocating vigilante justice, where anybody with red and yellow slung around his shoulders takes the law into his hands and become judge, jury and executioner if something or somebody, somewhere, does not meet his standards/ expecations.

That can be dangerously anarchic, and one is aware of the possibilities.

What I am advocating is channelising the simmering energies of young and proud Kannadigas to good, positive use for the State and its five-and-a-half crore people. Not because they are the only ones capable of doing so because no one else wants to do anything about it.

When corruption is so rampant, and the general attitude towards combating it so blase, somebody needs to plunge into the cesspool head first and get the hands dirty.

Why can’t Karnataka Rakshana Vedike walk the talk, if they mean good for the State?

In doing so, KaRaVe will be doing yeoman service to the people of Karnataka and bringing about effective change. They will be ushering in a real revolution the likes of which one has not heard of but only seen in the movies.

An entire nation will sit up and take notice.

What the courts cannot do, what the Government is not interested in doing, KaRaVe can probably get done in about six months, and take the efforts of the Lok Ayukta to the logical conclusion. In so doing, KaRaVe will earn the undying gratitude of the people, in whose name they are fighting.

Do KaRaVe’s leaders, supporters and followers have it in them to rise to the occasion?

Sounds like asking wolves to keep a watch on sheeps!

  2. Anonymous Guy Says:

Isnt this what the taliban does?

  3. hinfinity Says:

Nah! won’t work. KaRaVe’s core competency is goondaism and rowdyism. They must plan to diversify into related areas.

  4. Vinay Says:

More like “Asking wolves to keep watch over foxes” (somehow politicians/bureaucrats and sheep don’t seem to go together) :-)

  5. Vinay Says:

And no, this is not what the Taliban does.

  6. hari Says:

The problem with such organisations is that they have to eventually breed the issues they protest against – for their own survival. And often it goes too far… almost always.

If what is hated ..dies, so does the hater. And that’s not a sustainable business. So, since all like to live long… hate must survive. And all live (un)happily ever-after!

It all starts with some well-meant purpose probably, but ends just so… always.

  7. Yella OK Says:

ERR – Kudos to you for atleast trying to “bridge the divide”. Militant protests must meet “intellignsia” in Karnataka. Hope it does.

Ashwini – what a poor response to a positive post. Shame on you.

  8. Tarlemaga Says:

ER Ramachandran has lot his nutz…..

There are enough and more law enforcement agencies to carry out these duties.

This will be beginning of Jungle Raj even if remotely suggested.

  9. nijavaada Says:

    @ashwini
if you think you are sheep, then everything to you must be a wolf!

Open your eyes wide, and realise that there’re other *real* wolves out there, and they’re disguised as your brethren sheep.. ploying to hand you over to death.

Well, in reality, KRV has really done nothing that can harm kannada, karnataka and kannadiga – neither has it broken any law till date in its agitations against unfair steps taken against K-K-K.

  10. nijavaada Says:

KRV is surely the single hand that has the capability in it to do all those that the author manifests here in this article. But the author must also realise that all that repair is not a one-night’s job, and even if it were, it wouldnt be possible if we all just played audience to what KRV orchestrates.. we need to extend our supporting hands and boost KRV’s confidence in this battle of sorts it is fighting for the common welfare of K-K-K..

I hope the author implicitly meant this :)

  11. Vishnu Kumar Says:

no one authority can police the government it has to people and the media.

Media seems to be gearing up in the past few year but certainly not the people. With the chalta-hai, parvagella sire, adjust maddi attitude, i dont how long its going to take.

well they seem to vocing their opinions over the current church attacks.
Atleast they have good intentions and are pro kannada not religion.

  12. Rama Says:

KRV even wants the brandnames on products to be written in Kannada. Black paints on otherwise Kannada hoardings in Kuvempunagar shows that. To be a KRV member they should make at least SSLC pass as mandatory. They are confused lot. I think when they buy WILLS, they’ll first blackpaint the pack and then smoke!

  13. nijavaada Says:

    @ vishnu kumar
    you were right there..

language surpasses all religious barriers.. you’re one with your surroundings soon as you speak their tongue, not when you pray like them. religion is synthetic. language is pure, and natural! Comparison made simple, eh!?

  14. Yella OK Says:

Rama – You must be living in another age. How many FMCG products dont have a brand name written in regional languages? It is not as if KRV wants sun to rise in the west.

  15. vijay Says:

ERR, what you mention is already happening. Other than taking up core issues of Kannada-Kannadiga-Karnataka at the state level; KaRaVe is already addressing many governance related issues (corruption, health & education infrastructure related, physical infrastucture related, etc) at the local levels (district, taluks and village level). Otherwise how does one explain the growth of KaRaVe in the interiors of Karnataka. Interior parts of Karnataka do not have issues related to migration of outside state people for jobs / businesses, also they are not directly affected by issues (border, river water, etc) Karnataka has with neighbouring states. KaRaVe has 25000+ branches / 4 million + members across all the districts & taluks of the state. All this rapid growth has been possible only because of KaRaVe’s ability to address issues at the local level.

  16. senthil Says:

VIjay, why cant KRV stand up in elections and get elected? 4Million Members is 10% of electoral and they can dictate bigger parties. Dont go by numbers put up by them. KRV is confused a lot. They can only scream about problems, they can not solve any.

  17. vijay Says:

senthil, KRV will stand for elections when it deems fit in terms of preparation and timing. they can definitely give the more established parties a run for their money. and about the nos of members, they are there. i am not just going by their nos but have collected info abt the organization from independent sources.

and they arent confused. my assessment is that they are acting according to a plan & have strategy / roadmap to execute their plan.

  18. Dr. Sree Reddy Says:

    @ Rama
I bought pesticide in Bengaluuru this sept. Surprisigly it did not have any instructions in Kannada, English, Telugu, Tamil etc how to use it or the cautionary measures, at all.
I could not make out Languages printed there. (probably gujarati, bengali, marthi, urdu?, hindi)
Earlier I have seen products sold in Karantaka with all the 4 southern languages and English. But now why are they imposing languages that no one understands in the South
I am thinking of taking the matter to consumer court.
