Anil Kumble’s last delivery in Test match cricket

By churumuri

ALOK PRASANNA writes from London: Woke up early on a grey Sunday morning, ostensibly to catch the dying moments of an already dead Test match, debating whether or not the effort would be worth it.

Found out Anil Kumble was quitting.

Had to watch his last bowling effort. Thank god for live streaming cricket.

It wasn’t much. Four overs, sprinkled with long hops, the odd shooter, but mostly consistent stuff. It didn’t really matter of course.

It was just India’s greatest ever spinner going out on his terms.

A bandaged broken left hand, a dodgy shoulder, years and years of forgotten, and sometimes unrewarded toil. So many overs, on so many unforgiving pitches, relentless accuracy, relentless focus, and now it all ends.

Not with a bang, but with a graceful bow.

No theatrics, no showmanship, just another servant of Indian cricket quietly putting his tools back in place, wiping the workbench clean and turning out the lights as he quietly bids farewell to us.

One last spell on his favourite ground, in front of his adoring fans. His home away from home.

We wrote him off, again and again. He doesn’t spin the ball. They’ll play him like a medium pacer. He can’t take wickets on good tracks. His shoulder is dodgy. He is too old. Yet, he came back, again and again, in his own quiet way.

No bursts of anger. No angry ripostes to his detractors. A quiet word, an expression of pain at the lack of faith in him, followed by a promise to keep working. And another five wicket haul would see India winning again. And we would praise the batsmen.

Again and again, he would walk back to his run up. A quick jog to the crease, the high arm action, the ball clutched in his gigantic palm, wrists cocked and ready to release a sarpaastra that would bite the surface and hiss at the batsman before inevitably crashing into the stumps or into the pads.

We won’t see that again. The IPL notwithstanding.

Despite his considerable one-day achievements, Test cricket was Kumble’s forte. Pressure applied from one end. Hour after hour. An unerring length maintained over after over. No complaints about the state of the pitch, no excuses when fielders dropped catches and ‘keepers missed stumpings. He just did what he had to do.

Broken jaw or  no broken jaw.

Whether or not young cricketers aspire to play cricket like him, we can only hope that in the future, young Indians aspire to be like him.

And for being that source of inspiration, Anil-anna, you deserve our heartfelt gratitude.

    very true… good bye Anil…

there was a time when 6 out 11 players on the Indian side used to be from Karnataka… gone are the days… just the Wall (in tests) & Uthappa (in ODIs) left with the team.. hope to see many more from Karnataka…

  2. T Azeez Luthfullah Says:

The most attractive trait of Kumble is his humility. He holds the unique record of taking ALL the ten wickets of a team.

  3. Hiker Says:

His penultimate ball was a cracker! So very much like Kumble…you could have posted a video of that.

  4. Mysore Peshva Says:

Thanks to Alok Prasanna for the heartfelt tribute.

I will miss Anil Kumble, one of Karnataka’s Great Trio who put “gentleman” back in the gentleman’s game. (The others being Rahul Dravid and Javagal Srinath).

    *Azeez*
Kumble’s ten-wicket wipe (against Pakistan) was not unique. Jim Laker had achieved it for England in an Ashes series in July of 1956.

anil kumble (jumbo) is the greatest cricketer India has ever produced after kapil. India has produced great players like bedi, pattaudi, gavaskar, vishwanath, azhar, sachin, javagal srinath, venkatesh prasad, rahul dravid, sourav, laxman, etc. We and our media talk only about Sachin tendulkar which is not fair. let me tell you kumble has won more matches for india than Tendulkar. Our country is heading in wrong direction because of this media. can you tell me how Dhoni got prestigious “Khel Ratna” award and what has he done/given T20 is not the answer plz. Every thing is politics here. Kumble & Rahul deserve this honour than Dhoni. please analyze this and pass this information. And off course Rahul is one, one among the greatest. Jai hind, Be broadminded and a true INDIAN.

Words fail when talking about Anil. Awesome cricketer, Superb Gentleman.. May he enjoy his retired life fully as he thoroughly deserves.

Churumuri changing the Title of its webpage is an awesome tribute. Neatly done, Churumuri !!

As they say – all good things come to an end, Kumble’s cricket career too came to an end yesterday.

India can find and develop another spinner like Kumble, but not the Kumble that we enjoyed all these years – who is dependable, calm, fighter and more than anything a true gentleman.

Last few years were really hard on him given the speculation on his retirement… Wish he had very good bowling spell at kotla in his last test and a win possibly could have made his exit more sweeter.

Let’s hope Karnataka cricket association & Govt honors him well and uses his vast experience to regain Karnataka’s glory back on national scene (a decade or two back, atleast 3 to 5 players from Karnataka were representing India).

  8. H.R.Bapu Satyanarayana Says:

The gentle giant of Indian cricket, Kumble, who during his 18 years captured 619 wickets in 132 tests bid farewell to his cricketing career in Kotla test against the Aussies with his last ball to Mathew Hayden. It is the very venue where he made history, second cricketer to do so by taking all 10 wickets against the redoubtable Pakistani team.It was fitting that he took this difficult but eminently sensible decision for he realised while still his spirits and passion remained undimmed he knew that his body can not cope to sustain his consistency of taking wickets which indicated his awesome talent. When he entered he seemed an unlikely cricketer self-effacing and never flamboyant but gradually his bowling assumed a magical aura when he would beguile the best of batsmen by his trade mark bowling which seemed to hold no threat but proved deadly for he showed what a master craftsman he is with cherry which seemed to obey his bidding with uncanny precision. Yes, he had his share of critics and was in the receiving end of comments which cast doubts about his durability but he bore it all in silence and remained unfazed. Neither he showed his resentment for being neglected by selectors and like a smiling Buddha he absorbed all with quiet calmness. But what stands unique is that Kumble raised the stature of the cricket originally called gentleman’s game which in recent years had been highjacked by all sorts of unseemly happening on and off the field has become a role model to restore its reputation by his personal example. The high point of this was during Sydney cricket match which showed his sterling quality which earned admiration of alll. May his tribe increase

  9. Rob Says:

Was a true gentleman of the game. I will miss watching him play against us Aussies.

  10. Doddi Buddi Says:

Good for Jumbo! Will the dwarfy cretin get it? Can he walk out now? Thanks!

Its so unfortunate that not a single article on Kannada receiving classical status dissapoints me a lot.

  13. AnotherOne Says:

    http://www.mailtoday.in which is a serious newspaper says…

Curator Radhey Shyam Sharma said the pitch was deliberately turned into a flat, lifeless track at the instance of powerful people in the Indian cricket board’s pitch committee. This pushed Kumble into “ premature retirement”.

    ……….

This lobby, led by a powerful BCCI office- bearer, has been plumbing for Dhoni.
    ………..

  14. Hiker Says:

Watch the penultimate ball here at 1:42

That is Kumble says the commentator. Of course!

  15. Tathagata Mukherji Says:

My respect, gratitude to Kumble who has shown extremely rare consistency, accuracy as a bowler for almost 2 decades. I remember watching his epic batting against firey South Africa at the Eden Gardens.
    extremely humble person.

Good luck Kumble. Be happy (and don’t involve into BCCI affairs anytime soon- teach kids if you want- u will be happy. BCCI is full of dirty politics).

  16. santanu Says:

I want to know the date of leaving kumble from cricket

  17. Salty Says:

Anil Kumble was a kind of a spinner who was not well understood by his contemporaries. I mean, his best ball was supposed to be the straight ball. Its easy to comprehend Warne & Murli , conventional spinners that they are. Probably Kumble was ahead of his own times.
