Yella vokay. Sootu-bootu, salwar-kameez yaake?

There is something about “Rome” that makes Indian politicians shed their inhibitions, let their hair down, change their clothes, and become Romans in a manner they never would do in the motherland.

In Bahrain on a business trip on Friday, Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa is all “attention” and his cabinet colleague Shobha Karandlaje is “at ease” as they record their sojourn for posterity.

Gone is the white-and-white safari and the cotton saree. Thankfully, Ramachandre Gowda makes no effort to camouflage his son-of-the-soil credentials.

man…this is the first time i m seein some1 bein slandered for wearin a diff set of clothes as compared to his/her normal standards.

curiosity question to the contributor of the article:

if u are going out with ur frnds or with ur family on some special occassion or to some special event, are u going to wear ur best clothes that are reserved for spl times or are u gonna wear ur worn out daily wear clothes?

  2. Anonymous Guy Says:

Is it just Churumuri or are Yedi and Shobha *always* together?

  3. sathya Says:

For our media friends ….allow every individual to do what he likes….never go on criticizing everybody for every act…Thank God, they are wearing decent dresses…Or, do one thing , you prescribe the dress code….everybody cannot be Mahatma Gandhi ….

  4. nijavaada Says:

Yedi is looking like a half-case in that.. and Karandlaje looks like a fat punjabi housewife.. and bless me! this is what they want to showcase there being representatives of Karnataka in Bahrain!

So with respect to some of the first few commenters out here, let us not forget that these guys have gone there as our representatives and not as *themselves*, mind you! So they ought to actually represent their people, and not their slavish minds that make them think going out there in a seere or a panche is inferior!

The same inferiority that makes them shy away from speaking in Kannada when representing us in conferences, IT/BT biz shows, functions, and other public events – unless of course Kannada happens to be the topic, like during a Rajyotsava day celebration!!

  5. Dr. Sree Reddy Says:

    @Prajawaleshwaradu

Yes we all try to go in our best attire. Can you call her dress best?
She does n’t have beautiful sarees? It is polite to wear one’s traditonal dress in international scenes. If they have gone on a private trip, they are free . But if they have gone there as representatives of Karnataka, then i think it is different.
For many conferences, get togethers and convocations I wear sarees. People have always appreciated.

    @AG
I dont think they are always together, it is just the media and semi-media like Churumuri catch them when they are together.
    madokelasaiddare thane.
Churumuri was busy writing news items on Obulappa (Obama) of USA when Kannada language was elevated to Classical status and celebrating Rajyothsava.

  6. Tathagata Mukherji Says:

When Nehru can say, I am last British in India, why object to Yedi’s dress? Whether its Rajiv, or PV, or EMS, or Vajpayee, Advani- all wear Pants when outside India.

  7. Aatmasakshi Says:

With so-called “Sadhvis” and “Swamis” bringing such a glorious name to Hinduism under narconalysis, with an armyman with links to a Hindu outfit admitting to masterminding blasts, with shady BJP MPs running helter-skelter, it is obvious that supporters of the sangh parivar have lost all sense of humour that they cannot even look at a photograph of Karnataka’s “power couple” without getting all misty-eyed about their virginity. Get well soon, folks.

  8. Vinay Says:

Bidi Guru, let them wear what they want. We can criticize their policies or their actions, but we cannot criticize them for what they wear, what they eat..

  9. lakki Says:

the change in attire of our CM and his colleague is not something that needs a mention in the media.. u guys better look for somthing good to write about… its the wish of the CM or any person to wear what he/she likes as long as it is decent….please come out of this trivial stuff!!!

  10. Palahalli Says:

Aatmasakshi – It’s only a matter of time. Everybody realizes that low numbers invite ridicule. When these get higher, folks like you will be falling over each other to analyze and help out with Hindu grievances. That much has started already. Read Sagarika Ghosh’s latest download at CNNIbn.

What was that again? Kill one and it’s murder…..kill a million and it’s revolution?

  11. Baddimaga Says:

Who the hell cares if Yeddy wears cheddi or suit? Is there anything wrong if Yeddy wears suit? I think he wore it just for a change.

  12. prajwal Says:

    @dr.reddy

i asked if the writer if she/he wud go out in her/his best dress. Which implies the best dress that the individual owns or rather the individual thinks he/she owns. I cannot comment on the attire worn by the two ppl in pic , who knows mebe according to them it is the best pair they own!

Who m i to decide if the best dress another person owns is a sari or a suit or a mini skirt or just underwear, its upto the individual to decide wat looks good on him/her bcos they know the importance of the event they are going to attend!

And also i really don’t know how/when salwar kameez became a non traditional outfit, i always thought salwar kameez and diff types of saris are types of indian clothes since forever! but i may be wrong, i dont study history of clothing, its not important to me as long as i am covered.

@ commentaries stating they should wear clothes that represent us

Ok, they are going to represent us, so pray tell what attire are they to wear, assuming that they are representatives of kannada and karnataka, lets see now, some options i can think of

    1. just a lungi for yeddi n a worn out faded sari as worn by farmers working the paddy fields in the sweltering sun

    2. Formal shirt/pants worn by sales represenatatives of MNCs, IT company employees etc.

    3. Khadi kurta and jeans and a cloth bag as worn by a lot of reporters and artists(i have seen on ppl i know, so feel free to say otherwise )

4.the attire worn by dr.rajkumar in the song “huttidare kannada naadallhuttabeku”

    5. a sari for yeddi like a lot of eunuchs who go begging from vehicle to vehicle at a lot of traffic signals in bengaluru.

    6. uniforms like worn by school children and DRDO NAL/HAL employees

    7. police uniform

    8. jeans and fancy t shirts n salwars as worn by college sudents

    9. bling jewellry and really fancy gaudy clothes worn by film actors and actresses for a song sequence

    10. uniforms worn by hotel waiters, waitresses and cleaners

    11. traditional couple wearing sari and formal pant and shirt

All the above and many more all belong to karnataka and kannada speaking populace, so pray tell which of the above are the 2 representatives supposed to wear. Kindly do speak out of practicality n not out of sentimentality all d time

  13. Kannadiga Says:

Wearing lungi or panche is banned in Baharain and Dubai. This may be the reason yeddi wearing western clothes. The picture looks like the couple celebrating their silver wedding anniversary.

  14. yenka Says:

yake ee 3 jana ne yella kade hogthare .. ulida mantri galu satthu hodra?

  15. C Says:

Hmm, I bet if it was Sonia Gandhi wearing a dress or a women’s suit instead of a sari everyone would be condemning her as being the Italian bahu..

  16. Avva Madesa Says:

elli hudukidri saar? photo maatra priceless!

  17. prajwal Says:

hmmm…i have a curiosity question for all the ppl commenting here,

HOW CAN WE BE SURE THAT THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN IN BAHARAIN??

I mean, i could think of a few places in bengaluru itself(one of those posh huge multistar hotels for e.g.) that have pretty grand entrances! So i really cannot say if this photo was shot somewhere in India or in Baharain, and upon observing i see that everyone in the photo looks like an Indian, so the ppl and their attire doesnt suggest that this is indeed baharain,

All i am saying is, the visit to baharain might have been true but this photo might as well have been shot when yeddi and his political buddies were having an unofficial evenin out! so it is pointless to argue about what they are wearing when we aren’t even sure if the allegations made in this photo were on a sound basis!

  18. alvaa matte Says:

Whats your problem, whats bothering you, churumuri?

  19. Adi Bahrain Says:

This is ridiculous. Dont these guys have right to wear any thing they wish??

Delegation from karnataka attended an Investors Meet and also visited big Bahraini companies on that day. So, CM was in complete formals. The photo you have posted was taken at the Investors meet organised by Bahrain Kannadigas.

Next day he attended Kannada Vaibhava-2008 organised by Bahrain Kannada Sangha. CM was in his regular full white Safari and Shobha madam was in yellow sari. Minister Ramachandra Gouda and MLA Gopala Bhandari were in regular white khaadi costumes.

We are happy that he attended our programme and also announced that the Karnataka govt shall help us in building our own Kannada samskruthi Sabha in Bahrain.

Some of the comments posted above are really disgusting. You guys are insulting your own brothers and sisters. Mind it.

  20. B.N.GURURAJ Says:

    Mr. Yadiyurappa,

Suits do not become you. Why do you emulate bygone dress styles. Be original! Less said about your companion’s baggy salwar, the better!

    Gururaj.

  21. Hiker Says:

    Churumuri,

What is your problem with sootu bootu and salwar? On one hand you defend Shreya Saran wearing a revealing dress in a public function and here you crib about someone wearing sootu bootu and salwar. Why such intolerance?

  22. Azamgarh Says:

    Nothing Wrong in the approach.

When we can wear any kinda dress, why cant the politicians….

Funny Punny Media…. They dont have news concerning development to sell I guess.

    Juicy …News has its limits..

  23. Dakshin Says:

Bidi geleyare, they have freedom to wear what they like and they wore it. Good photo breaking the usual montony of both here. What’s wrong? They are two beaming leaders in full bloom.

  24. Dakshin Says:

Bidi geleyare. Good photo breaking the usual montony of both here. What’s wrong? They are two beaming leaders in full bloom.

  25. Cheddi Chikka Says:

Traditionally Saree typifies the male dominated hindutva sterotype of the cosmetic women with her primary place close to the hearth and home. The churidhar is symbol of the women on the move. A women free from all shackles of misogynist expectations of the typical males chaunistic soceity much propogated by the Sangh Parivar. A women in the churidhar can ride a bike, can run catch a BMTC bus, can give a kick to a predatory male agressor and be part of the productive process through work and industry.
In light of this and the dialectic materialism of marx how do we analyze Shobhakka’s change in attire from the typical Hindu women in her nine yard saree to the churidhar. Shobhaka’s atire in Bahrain is not so revolutionary and neither does it symbolizes the new agressive feminist policy tilt of the Sangh Parivar as we are made to believe. Her supposed disdain towards wearing Sarees is a smokescreen and trojan horse to maintain existing class struture and bourguiese values. There is a high degree of hypocrisy exhibited by Shobhakka and her efforts to showcase the women’s liberation within the confines of the arcane framework of the sangh parivar is hypocritical to say the least.
However some streams of marxist intellectuals have hinted that Shobakka’s atire might be a precursor to a new kind of female militancy of the Hindutva vareity. But based on the dialectic reasoning of marxists it needs to be seen how the Thesis (saree) and the anti thesis (churdhar) would crystalize into a synthesis of the nature of women’s attire in Hindu soceity. More so this change in attire must be viewed from the lens of class struggle and the changing trends in the clothing of proleteriat working class women. Much research needs to be done in this field before any conclusion can be derived.

  26. govinda Says:

the photo seemed to me like morphed one at first look.

why couldnt yaddi wear a tie…

  27. vasu Says:

Ah, one point i wanted to bring up. Yedi & Shobha go to Bahrain to drum up investment for our bengaluru…why? As it is, we have no electricity here, poor infrastructure, shitty roads and garbage strewn all over the place. Why the hell are they going to Bahrain? Sheer waste of money – my money, your money, the tax payers money….all going down the drain. First Yedi – please clean up bengaluru, give more powers to lok ayukta, crack down on the rampant corruption and get cracking…if you want to be known as someone who did something for us prajas. or otherwise you can go down in history as another good for nothing CM — a long list indeed.

  28. southernbelle Says:

come on of all the things you can take potshots of……..this person goes for clothes.

hmm as they say critics and cockroaches never die.

  29. kannadiga:) Says:

Shobha K looks like the captain of the kARNATAKA ladies Kabbaddi team wearing a churidar.

  30. Dr. Sree Reddy Says:

churidhar a symobol of women on the move???
really have you seen how churidhar clad women in Haryana or rural areas in the North? Are they on the ‘move’?

  31. Dr. Sree Reddy Says:

    @ prajwaleshwaradu

What does your mother wear for family functions/festivals/ weddings?
i am sure she wers something formal and looks diginified. right?
That’s what i mean wearing a decent, good, presentable dress.
You have mentioned so many dresses which all form one’s daily attire and everyday affair.
Is visiting foreign countries as a dignitary is everyday affair for yeddi and shobha?

somebody has rightly said Shobha K looks like a kabbadi player. For me she looked even like a kustipatu.

  32. kannadiga:) Says:

Somebody should tell Ramachandre Gowda not to wear see-through shirts which reveals his undergarnments :)

  33. simhapuri kannadiga Says:

i am sure many of you would have liked them to be naked….

  34. anamika Says:

    Shaeb Biwi aur ghulam.
