More things change, more they remain the same

History, it is said, first repeats itself as a tragedy, then as a farce. But usually no one is laughing, no one is even noticing.

From Deccan Herald, 25 years ago, 26 December 1983:

‘Kranti Ranga merger with Congress likely’

New Delhi: The merger of the Karnataka Kranti Ranga with the Congress(I) appeared a distinct possibility today after S. Bangarappa had a meeting with Prime Minister and Congress(I) President Indira Gandhi here this morning. The Kranti Ranga leader, who had been forced out of the Congress(I) two years ago following his differences with the then Chief Minister, R. Gundu Rao, arrived here last night. “We talked about the general political situation,” was all he said.

From Deccan Herald, yesterday, exactly 25 years later, 26 December 2008:

‘Bangarappa wants to rejoin Congress’

Bangalore: Samajwadi Party state president S. Bangarappa is all set to return to the Congress. He, on Thursday, said that he was mentally prepared to contest from Shimoga Lok Sabha constituency on the Congress ticket in the next Lok Sabha polls. He said that his main objective in the state’s politics was to fight communal forces. “In order to pevent L.K. Advani becoming the Prime Minister, secular forces should come together and make sure that UPA continues to hold power at the Centre,” he said.

Bangarappa said he would convene Samajwadi Party working committee meeting and take a decision to merge party’s state unit with the Congress. He said he had been invited to the Congress by KPCC President R.V. Deshpande, working president D.K. Shiva Kumar and the party’s Shimoga unit. He would convey his decision to the SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, he added.

Bangarappa’s son and former minister Kumar Bangarappa has welcomed his father’s decision to return to the Congress.

Beautiful observation by the Churumuri. One should not be surprised if the events are repated on 26 December 2033.

  2. Coffee addict Says:

    Bangarappa will never change.

  3. Pulikeshi the Last Says:

It is about time that our beggar political parties decided whether Bangarappa is a gold mine or a landmine.

I am touched by the generous gesture of Kumara B. Didn’t he once say that his father practised political brutality?

  4. mysooruboyz Says:

Maybe collection not good in SP? With people like this ‘leading’… how can we expect progress and security?

  5. Raajakeeya Says:

Bangarappa is a one man army in himself. In his 30 years of politics he has won more than 10 times which shows what he is. Irrespective of party he is the leader who demands respect.

The farmers in my village still respect him because he was the one who gave free current to farmers and did saala manna during his rule.

  6. gagan Says:

co incidence indeed. great that you have observed it !!

  7. Hiker Says:

“In order to pevent L.K. Advani becoming the Prime Minister, secular forces should come together and make sure that UPA continues to hold power at the Centre,”

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  8. Ashwin Kumaraswamy Says:

One needs to adapt to changing times and that is what Mr. Bangarappa is doing – today, BJP which emerged as a force to reckon in karnataka with the help of Bangarappa and Kumaraswamy needs to be disciplied (as the govt cant be for one caste/religion/creed).

I would support the realignment of political affiliations to churn better and progressive politics. But one should not Bangarappa whenever he has changed parties, he has not done so for occupying political power, but he has done so to uphold his self respect. Had he been a power hungry he would have compromised his self respect to be in power on various occassions. Atleast he is better than the curent crop pf politicians who shift parties to extract their pound of political power like what we have sen recently in Operation Kamala.

  10. Not a Sarekoppa Bangarappa Says:

    @Rajakeeya,

Bangarappa has been in politics since 1967. He has completed 41 years in the electoral politics and has won 11 elections out of 13.

  11. thalaeharatae Says:

I was wondering where is our dental doctor Ramesh…

Now we have an equivalent of Dr.Ramesh in Ashwin.

If self respect was so important for Mr. B, he would stay in SP as he gets enough respect there. Also, he would not have taken support of both Con-g and JDS to contest elections last time around.

Truth is, he is finding it difficult to survive alone. He is no longer a force that he used to be or the one that he use to claim . He has nothing to prove toanyone, he has won 10 elections and has done some work. Times have changed now. He should retire now with some self respect intact, else he would forcedto retire with his so called self respect in tatters and this not from yeddy or from any Reddy brothers but his own constituency people.

Else, Mr.B should now join JDS as it is the only party that is untouched by him, that way he would complete a fullcircle of being in every major political party of Karnataka. so much for the self respect, my foot.

  12. Mumbai Says:

The great Indian political circus. When will the people wake up???

  13. Pulikeshi the Last Says:

Without the help of his jaathi and his ability to manipulate it to his own ends, no politician can be a one-man force. Bangaarappa’s dozen wins have not really materially affected his caste. If so, what do those wins mean?

I think Karave is the best party for Bangaaru. It is on the eve of announcing its transformation into a political party. A few more crores in shake down money and it will be ready. Naraayana Gowda can use some help.

  14. Bomma Says:

    Pulikeshi,

The cheddis and their brahmana overseers will do all in their power to disrupt KRV coming to power.

The BJP and the RSS cheddis call themselves principled, but why did they do all the deals with the mining reddys to come to power?

Because they know that their jaathi rajakeeya cannot succeed directly anymore. So the new games of hatred and division.

With the rest divided now and power by means of deals with various lobbies (including non-karnataka people), they will oppose KRV – which is a party with a real base among common people. If KRV does start gaining as a political party, it will be mean disaster for the cheddis and their caste games in Karnataka.

  15. B.N.Gururaj Says:

Mr.Bangarappa has only one agenda: How to ensure that his family is close to the seat of power, though not actually in power. He miscalcualted when he joined BJP and quit it rather prematurely, without waiting for BJP to come to power in Karnataka. Now he has no choice but to join congress band.

Mr.Bangarappa, who started his political career in the early seventies as a socialist (add a bit of acting in Kannada movies), is not new to the game of changing parties, forming parties, merging parties, all with the noble goal of keeping communal forces at bay. A cynical politician like him does not himself beleive what he is saying, much less expects others to believe him. He has to give some reason for changing camp. The reason might as well be the weather of the day! He beleives that the voters of Shimoga district worship and will accept any yarn spun by him, except that he has forgotten the recent electoral debacle. Another routing of his family in the election might bring some sense.

The losers of this political game are firstly the voters of Karnataka, who might still be voting for Bangarapa’s party, and of course, Mulayam Singh Yadav, who was dumb enough to trust Bangarappaji, to give roots to his party in the south!

  16. Isotot Says:

KARAVE can never come to power as long as they are not united.

  17. VALALE SUBBANNA Says:

Mr Bum out of power is like fish out of water. He is ready to sacrifice
anything for power. He is not a mass leader but of his caste. He is fighting
his last battle(coming parl election). Was Adwani not there when he joined BJP, what bullshit is he talking now.India’s number 1 opportunistic politician.

  18. krishna Says:

    Look at who is speaking:
He said that his main objective in the state’s politics was to fight communal forces.

This monster was the architect of the cauvery riots which hit Bangalore where lots of people were killed and business destroyed. He is just a crass opportunist. With Mr Deshpande he can sell this entire state to Pakistan for a neat profit.

  19. Raajakeeya Says:

Dr.Ramesh – Why is that everyone who supports JDS becomes Dr ramesh?

Hey,lets respect each others opinion.I like sidaramiah some one may like kumaraswamy and other may like yedyurappa.

I can’t understand the “Only I am right and only my taste is good” attitude prevailing here.

  20. Coffee addict Says:

H D Deve Gowda’s fouth and last son’s name is also Dr. Ramesh. He runs H D Hospital.

  21. VALALE SUBBANNA Says:

    @Mr.bomma,
1.One of the mines reddy’s “chela” is now KRV’S Bellari dist president.
2.Mr.Yediyoorappa inagurated blood donation camp on Mr.Narayana Gowda’s birthday.
    (read:YEDDY=CHEDDY & N.GOWDA=MR CLEAN according Mr.Bomma)
I think I have answered your baseless conspiracy theories.

  22. thalaeharatae Says:

@RaajaKeeya – I agree, Yes, you are right everyone is entitled to have their own opinion. I’m not denying that.

all I’m saying is being an educated person stop hero worshipping, get real see the obvious.

  23. Doddi Buddi Says:

    Dear All,

    Read this nugget in thatskannada.com

I believe Master Hiranniah has been calling Dirty Devegowda ‘Nelson Mandela’. That is ‘Nela’ ‘Son’ = ‘Son of the Soil’ (1)

    ‘Mandela’ = ‘Mandey Illa’ (2)

Now quickly adding (1) + (2) we get Son-of-the-Soil Brainless.

    So Devegowda = Nelson Mandela
    QED

  24. Raajakeeya Says:

Some of the intresting names which members have given to politsians in this forum

    Devegowda – Nelson mandela
    Yedyurappa – womeniser

People can add on this list.

  25. Ravindra Joshi Says:

One need not for 25 years. Every 5 years Mr Bangarappa would change parties. May be once in 5 cycles he might be returning to Congress, knowingly or unknowingly. He reminds us of Mr Charan Singh, the man everyone loves to hate.

  26. Doddi Buddi Says:

    Politics!

    A slight clarification:

Dirty Devegowda = Hassan Nelson Mandela

Yeddi = Womaniser = Big Game Hunter
HDK = Womaniser = Small Fish Lover

  27. Raajakeeya Says:

I can add some spice here

    kutantri devegowda
    kamuka yeddi
    kuchestheya kummi
