From Yadavagiri to every part of India i.e. Bharat

There is nothing, well, almost nothing like memories of the macho sound of an Ideal Jawa or Yezdi motorcycle with a “Made in Mysore” label plastered on it.

At the 7th International Jawa Yezdi Day celebrations at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bangalore on Sunday, a 60cc “Colt” catches the eye of shutterbugs (top), while the bigger Roadkings are lined up before the proud owners vroomed off on a symbolic rally to Channapatna on the Bangalore-Mysore highway (below).

the “colt 60″ was one aesthetically challenged bike: an underpowered moped with foot-shift gears, a step-through frame, and a shapeless fuel tank.

in the mid-1990s, the colt’s only real competition was the 60 cc enfield explorer, which was much better engineered (thanks to discarded italian technology imported for enfield’s silver plus). plus, of course, the explorer had far better paintwork. but at rs. 15,500, the explorer in 1993 was about rs. 2,000 dearer than the colt.

my good friend gowthama (of maharaja’s college) owned a road-king. i cannot forget how well he loved that bike — yet how eagerly he sold it! i sometimes wonder how he’s doing, and his old bike.

A visit to Jawa plant in Yadavagiri was somthing i and my cousins did during our annual summer holiday trips to Mysore. We would take the bus to Vontikoppal, the trek the way to Jawa factory. Ofcourse, we dint dare go inside..but used to stand in front of the gate, spend sometime hanging around. eat raw mango pieces and then go back. We used to hold the bike and its factory in such awe ..

Felt terrible that factory land is taken over by real estate guys who are contructing apartments there..its like defiling a worship place ..

My dad used to work for Ideal Jawa what a company it was that time and I remember all the labourers used to go often on strike and then finally it had to close down. Now recently when I went to Mysore I saw apartments come up in this place. ..

I am a proud owner of Jawa 250 (1973) which I bought new.More that once I had gone to Mysore to have a glimpse of the birthplace of my machine.I had seen the plant from ouside but in the absence of any references I did not get opportunity to visit the plant.
Now I understand that the land has been sold to some real estate dealer. It is absolutely unfortunate.I FEEL VERY BAD ABOUT IT.
