Twenty-five years after they passed out of Marimallappa‘s High School in Mysore, the “10th B” batch of 1984—including one very, very famous Mysorean—walked down memory lane last Saturday, 29 August. They sat on the same benches they warmed a quarter-century ago, compared notes and (hopefully) compared paunches.
In the picture below, the group pose for posterity.

Sitting (2nd row from top, L to R): M.P. Manjunath (Keeki), J. Srinath (Babu), S Manjunath (Akasha), H.S. Shailesh

Why no girls?

Hey!
All the guys seem to be sitting the gals side! I was in teh same class some 12 yrs ago!
We had strange surrogate keys(co-rdinates) assigned to gals. Deepti, who was class sweetheart would was the first on the second bench and was assigned a vector 21!. But Idont have fond memories of maris. Because its a school that practised apartheid (‘B’ Section). Teachers, save B Seshadri and a coupel of others were most uninspiring and a few like YNR/KM were real sadists!

10th B in the photo is a very small class like most of the classrooms of Maris. At least, during my batch(99), the 10th C classroom was bigger than any other class.

man ..our school never had so many fans ( MES)
4 September 2009 at 8:46 pm
@vinay forget fans! Look at the ceiling. When I was there, we were always under the constant fear as to when it would fall on our head!

It is heartening to see the very very famous Mysorean take the time to re-live some of that nostalgia. Says volumes about the man. Hats off to you sir..
@Vinay,
It’s that Mysore thing I guess — close knit, everyone knows everyone kinds. I wish Bengaluru had some of that.
In any get togethers my conversation goes thus “Neevu Girinagara na ? Naavu third phase. Neevu first phase aa ? ok.. “; akward silence; switch topics, blame the politicians — always works :-)
Replace Bengaluru with Mysore and my wife, unlike me, can somehow find 5-10 people who she and this stranger are mutual friends/related. Have seen that with most Mysoreans.

Wow! this room brings back soo many memories! Of reading CSR and random quiz books to know for the next quiz tomorrow, solving infinite question papers to know how to ace the public exams, escaping classes on the pretext of practicing for the next invocation for the random event coming up, discussing Harry Potter excessively, and of course listening random trivia from teachers!
They seem to have put a different ceiling and fans too!
Yeah! guys are sitting on the girls side.
Nice to read this just before teachers day… If any of my teachers are reading this, I had a wonderful three years there!

@Vinay, You literally meant fans ? As in ceiling fans ? lol, I got that completely wrong !
4 September 2009 at 11:47 pm
Was in 10th B, 97 batch.
used to sit where Srinath is sitting in the first photo…
So nice to see the work done on the cieling.
The entrance to the building had a set of plaques of 10th std rank holders on the wall… i see its still there.

Thanks for this post and congratulations for the 1984 batch to celebrate this occasion in style. Well done friends.
It feels nice to recollect memories that we (my batchmates and I) had in this same room (10th B). We are just 1 year senior to this batch and missed the opportunity to celebrate the occasion last year.
We are all spread across the globe and have not been in touch, since our PU graduation. Now we are trying to locate our friends. If any of the reader of this blog has studied high school (1980-83) and/or PUC (1983-85) at MMHS and MMJC respectively, please visit and subscribe to the following googlegroup or get in touch with me at ydevaraj@gmail.com
http://groups.google.com/group/marimallappas80-85/
We missed the opportunity to celebrate silver jubilee of High school graduation but we still have time to celebrate the PUC silver jubilee which happens next year (1985-2010). Let us not miss the one we have on our hand.
Thanks.

Some of my fondest memories of life relate to my three years at Marimallappa’s: Eighth Grade (1959-60); and two years of High School.
Some of the best teachers I ever had were from this institution: R. Anantharamu (English), K.B. Nanjappa (made me love math), JMT Rajan ( a dynamic headmaster).
The School Day was a great affair. Representing the school at the Education Week, drama competitions, inter-school debates bot inside and away from Mysore, participating in Scout Janbooree – I am grateful for all that opportunity.
Whenever I am in Mysore, I make it a point to drop in. The reception is generally good – a young student or a attendant – they are always graceful and helpful. A principal a decade ago, I must admit, was both graceless and dismissive.
Last visit, was in January 2008 and I was accompanied my brother Kashi, another alum of the school. We both missed seeing our favorite globe!
Now we live in US and have been for the past 30 years. I am in touch with a couple of contemporary friends like Dr. P. Chandrashekar, his brother Vishwanath (former Mayor), and Dr. Vijay Vaman.
If there is anyone else from that era, i would love to get in touch with you (K. Dinesh, B.S. Ananad, C Muralidhar, B. S. Prabhakar, B.S. Ravi, Ejaz Hussain, Salim, Swaprabhananda Aradhya – anyone home?!

It is so nice to see the younger generation visiting and enjoying their almamater. Although I never studied i MMP HS, I know a lot of people that did. besides, I used to go tere often with my father who was the headmaster in late forties. Recently, I did visit Mysore and also stopped by the school to get some pics.
