On the day his party was tasting defeat in three States, Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa sips tea the old-fashioned (down market?) way in the company of the (more suave?) home minister, Dr V.S. Acharya, at the BJP office-bearers meeting at Malleshwaram in Bangalore on Thursday.
Of course, there will be those who will say tea and coffee taste better this way, that drinking from the cup is a colonial hangover of Resident Non-Indians, but surely there will also be those who will say that the chief minister of a State ought to exhibit more “class” in front of the cameras?
Of course, there will be those who will say this is the CM’s personal style, that he has been doing it for years, that he only does it among his own, not in front of world leaders, but surely there are better ways of suggesting that you drink like the aam masse than to slurp (noisily?) from the saucer?
Of course, there will be those who will say this is none of anybody’s business, but why shouldn’t it be?

…but …where is the bun ???

Unnecessary post. Who told you that you could not drink from a saucer without slurping? And what is the relation between BSY drinking tea from a saucer and his party losing elections in 3 states ? Compare this to the photo churmuri posted some time back of the yuvaraja carrying a empty plastic bucket and walking behind a daily laborer girl for Photo ops purpose.

:) So long as he does not claim this makes him more Indian and closer to the aam aadmi.

I fully support Yeddyurappa’s drinking style! He is a villager. Why should he behave like a city snob?
22 October 2009 at 9:47 pm
… and since you have already mentioned all the possible ways of analysis of this post, you have effectively blocked anybody’s enthusiasm to comment here.
hope you had a good reason to waste your time super-analysing this post, cos you definitely wasted mine by making me read it.

Hi,
If you ever ask a tea taster and coffee cupper , they will tell that that is the best way to ge the real taste of ea or coffee. The reason for the better taste is that more oxygen meets the liquid increasing the taste while when slurps.
However both tasters and cuppers do not drink tea and coffee when in a tea shop and cafe for the reason you know why.

i commend churumuri for this brilliant commentary — brave, meaningful journalism.

Man of the moment is BSY.
In the recent assembly polls, BJP lost badly,it not only lost seats, it also lost vote share.
Karnataka sent the highest number of LS seats to BJP at the centre.
In karnataka, not only did BJP register a thumping increase in seats but also a significant increase in vote share.
The defeats of BJP in state after state make BSY stand out like a real lotus among the squelch.
So instead of rancid pickles, articulate TV debators, and clumsy spin doctors or shrieking women as PM candidates of BJP, it is about time, we had BSY as the future PM candidate of BJP.
WHy?
Simply because he has delivered the max number of MPs to BJP in Entire India.

Nothing wrong in this.
Saucer is used like that only.
stop criticising everything unnecessarily.
23 October 2009 at 3:26 pm
Here is my take:
There is saying in Kannada ” Ballavane Balla Belladha Ruchi”…roughly translated it means people with taste appreciate their gruel..
The BSY act of having chai is just that..
As an ex Hyderabadi i fully endorse BSY style..trust me tea taster better in a saucer !

Can some body tell as to what is the colour of Yeddi’s UNDERWEAR? Probably Churumuri can tell!!
23 October 2009 at 5:38 pm
Ah, the tea tastes good when you drink it from the saucer. If you slurp, it is tastier. Class? Bah! I remember an old cartoon by Mario. A person with sute, boot and tie (obviously an Englishman) is sitting on the chair, with one leg folded like we sit ( Kokkare style). Looking at him, another one says, oh! I guess you have been in India for a long time!
23 October 2009 at 5:44 pm
I found the post interesting. If he had made a remark AGAINST those who enjoy their tea from a cup, that would have been trying to score a point where none is deserved.

Crap post!!! who asked %^&$# to click at that time and then rant about it. It’s high time KP visit Jindal rejuvenation center

What a kind of non-sense post is this? Can we expect some thought provoking posts here rather than dumb one like this.
Churumuri seems to be online version of English news channels.

I support yedyurappa here.whats wrong in being quite honest in your manners.
I also support simple’s words about elevating yedyurappa to igher post.Let kannadaigas hod major power in National party.

Scientifically,
1.Putting tea on clean plate without insects falling increases the surface area of the liquid to dissipate heat quickly. Extremely helpful when there is shortage of time.
2.Drinking at moderate temperature is a good healthy habit.
I really don’t know what “class” the writer wants to convey to be superior than science.
Seeing the photo (assuming it’s not edited) I think he is balancing it very well, acknowledged by a visibly surprised Acharya; and not slurping it noisily since any kind of imbalance at this stage would lead to stains on his bili shirt . After Clinton episode Stains are quite scandalous for politicians, although surf excel maintains Daag Achche hai!!

like raaja’s comment!
25 October 2009 at 3:25 pm
high class people have time enough to drink their tea slowly, hence do not need to cool their beverage by drinking from saucer. drinking from saucer and being in a rush reduces the opportunity to have an engaging conversation. being “classy” is not a requirement for the post of cm, needless to say however yeddy is not classy. even in the middle class social milieu of a district town, he would be considered a laggard in term taste and refinement.
perhaps all these things, taste, refinement, and class are overrated qualities,, , contemptible even..all i’m sayin is that he doesnt have them
25 October 2009 at 7:54 pm
Yeddi is in a hurry to drink tea and be done with it or he is looking forward to a stimulating time with Shobha K that famed dentist’s delight? At least the man is humble enough to drink tea humbly. Gentlemen and ladies, I give you ‘The Humble CM of Karnataka’!!
25 October 2009 at 8:55 pm
@scoob
“high class people have time enough to drink their tea slowly”
Are you kidding? – high class and tea ??
Which class did you dropout ???
26 October 2009 at 12:54 am
@raaja
yes, it is rumoured that there are those among the higher classes that drink tea from time to time…. crazy, but true
26 October 2009 at 3:29 pm
Everybody has freedom to drink and eat the way they feel comfortable and happy doing it. Once upon a time(early 1920′s or 30′s, 40′) it was fashionable to drink the way present CM is drinking. How does it matter?
Why should it be an issue at all?
Let anybody eat /drink they want…..
mado kelsaillavaa…..!!
