It’s true, political analysis = fortune telling

Astrologer Veenu Sandal on what the stars foretell for Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa in M.J. Akbar‘s fortnightly magazine, Covert:

“His stars indicate that his long experience of more than 20 years in public life will continue to be challenged strongly by dissidents who started their political careers much later but are far more powerful. As now, so it will be upto mid-2010—Yediyurappa will have his back to the wall, with factionalism, opposition and a signficant degree of deceit continuing to be a bane. He will be locked in bitter feuds, pulled between the necessity of devoting time and attention to development work and keeping his detractors at bay. In fact, despite the support extended to him by key people it will be only after September 2010 that he will be able to recover lost ground in real terms.”

    wow, i am truly awed by the power of astrology.

    But this could have also been predicted by anyone who reads newspaper once in 10 days.

    Regular techniques like speaking in riddles employed. “dissidents who started their political careers” is hardly a riddle though.

    Anyway thanks to these guys for reminding me every now and then what a fraud this astrology is.

    Analysts job is nothing more than fortune telling! I remember Prem Shankar Jha, who wrote in support of Natwar Singh, when he left congress and he even said that Natwar singh can hurt congress prospects!!

    How about stock market analysts?? Their analysis typically goes as below…

    “If the Stock can break the Rs.110, then it can go above 125, so one can buy this stock with a target of 110 and a stop loss at Rs.95…” (in other words, you can make profit, you can make loss – that depends on your luck – not my analysis).

    “Since FIIs may find investing in India attractive, Infrastructure play may get a boost. I see significant gains for stocks in this sector, if FII investment climate continues to be bullish, and govt. supports Infrastructure sector…” (in other words, any thing may happen).

    Basically what that they all say is – “I HAVE NO BETTER CLUE THAN ANYONE ELSE, BUT I GET PAID FOR MY OPINIONS”!!

    Proposal: Legally recognize Astrology as profession. Make them to register themselves, before they can predict anybody’s future. Let there be a receipt for the money they charge. Let them give their prediction in writing. Finally there should be a special court to handle the cases of ‘wrong predictions’ and penalty should be so high that, these Idiots won’t dare to predict anybody’s future…

    Who wrote this? Akbar or Veenu?! Or Neerja Chowdhury?!

  5. prajwal Says:

    @cool dude

    harkol has given a good number of examples about “professions” which are legal and yet make money by claiming to “analyze” the trends and to use them to predict the future

    if you won’t penalise them, why do you want to penalise the astrologers. isn’t that discrimination, catching one crook and letting the other crooks go for the same crime!

    The only essential diff between the two categories is that one uses numbers on a screen as basis of predictions, the uses the spatial locations of the stars and planets relative to the earth which are also numbers;
    :D

    I like the Japanese tradition of Omikuji fortune telling, if you don’t like the fortune, you stick it to the tree in the temple and the bad luck stays there instead of coming with you
