Sauce for the Gowda ain’t sauce for the Gandhi?

For the literate, “decent” middle-class, H.D. Deve Gowda‘s invective-laden outburst at B.S. Yediyurappa may underline the limited vocabulary of modern politicians. But why did Gowda, who has not used such language in public in the last 50 years, calmly repeat the words on national TV?

For the urban chattering clases, Gowda’s rant may only confirm their worst fears about the coarseness of politicians from the rural countryside. But how come we are so much more accommodating of a Varun Gandhi, whose London of School Economics education did not stop him from showing his “killer instinct”?

Narendar Pani, professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), in Mail Today:

“It is important not just to say the outrageous but to say so in a language that will attract the attention of the national media. Gowda’s Kannada phrases in that verbal attack before television cameras was foul in itself. But it is unlikely to have got him and his son on national television.

“It was the use of English swearwords that allowed him to take his case against the project to a national television-viewing audience.

“Such an approach does, of course, further distance the former prime minister from English-speaking policy makers. But it brings him closer to those who are hurt by liberalisation and believe there is no way they can be heard. This is not as small a constituency as growth rate figures would have us believe.”

“how come we are so much more accommodating of a Varun Gandhi”? IMO, that is a strange comparison – I doubt the English media (and English speaking audience) was accommodating of Varun Gandhi. Disdain for Gowda need not be for his rural roots or lack of LSE degree – plenty of other sane reasons to detest the man.

  2. dodo Says:

Haha churumuri, I was waiting for this! How come you abuse any other political party ,without abusing the chaddis in equal measure. But I did not anticipate that, to equate the balance you will go back in history and bring up this footage. If you have any memory left, you’ll recognize that Varun’s bravado drew a million time more criticism and negative publicity than the humble farmer’s fumings drew.

  3. kavitha Says:

If I remember correctly Varun was also arrested and put in jail under NSA for this…are we planning something similar to the sin of the soil ..:)

  4. maald Says:

    generic churumuri recipe:

One spoon of blaming any person or party to be immediately followed by two spoons of blame on BJP and its leaders.

  5. Anshuman Patel Says:

Perhaps Chrumuri is asking this rhetorical question to it’s own regular posters (In it’s own words – literate, “decent”, middle-class) on this site.

Yes, there was quite an outrage about Varun G’s remarks in the national media and in the non-BJP political parties. But then they are the usual so called secular suspects right? Nothing surprising about it.

However it would be quite instructive to go back in time and revisit some of the threads in Churumuri circa March 2009 – ie when Varun G made those (allegedly if you will) nasty remarks about the ‘katuve’ and ‘kaat doonga’.

Go through the comments for those threads and you wouldn’t notice muc of moral outrage and pillorying(as it’s in the current DG case) – except by a few. Many others seem to nicely sidetrack the main issue and play on the tangential. It’s quite instructive to say the least.

First the distinction. Varun is an Idiotic ‘baccha’, who is a green horn – an upstart… Deve Gowda is an Ex-prime minister, ex-chief minister and senior most politician in the state. Someone who should guide the younger lot instead of being a bad role-model.

Secondly, Varun’s leg was held to flame by all media and right thinking people, including the courts. Where is similar action in case of Gowda?

Thirdly, Varun’s comments weren’t specific to any person. It was against a community (not that it is any less dangerous). But, it is plain hate speech, of which so many folks can be held guilty of (Even in this forum posts). Devegowda’s was a specific, directed attempt to denigrate, and abuse the sitting chief minister.

Varun deserves to be punished for Hate speech, and hopefully will be disqualified as well. And, Deve gowda should be banished by the people for his uncouth behavior in the past few years.

  8. December Stud Says:

Really? Cheddis are that bad, huh?

Long live Deve Gowda and his outbursts…. For the sake of ‘intellectuals’ and their funny arguments.

  9. Simple Says:

When will BJP get over the Gandhi fixation?

A news report says that Varun Gandhi is slated to become the National youth President of BJP.

And to think that is party was against dynasty rule – or to be more specific, Gandhi rule!

    Hypocrisy at its worst!

  10. huttadallihutta Says:

First there was Nehru, then it was Indira Gandhi, for sometime it was Sanjay Gandhi, then came Rajeev Gandhi followed by Sonia Gandhi and now Rahul Gandhi.

    This is dynastic rule.

Varun Gandhi is the first of the Gandhi family to be in BJP. So where is the question of dynastic rule here??? His mother is an ordinary MP in the party, thats it.

Hypocrisy?? I would call it ignorance at its heights!!!!

  11. J Says:

I was wondering why Churumuri hadn’t come up with a comparison but now it appears on your blog. Wonder what took you so long?

I am happy to say that I am a proud reader of Churumuri. Three cheers to Churumuri.

  12. Simple Says:

    Hutta

A Gandhi family member in Congress is wrong.

A Gandhi family member in BJP is right.

Whoa! Hats off to your slimy, rib-tickling post.

Now, BJP has two parivars that will control its destiny.

The Sangh Parivar. and the Gandhi Parivar.

(In Karnataka, there is a third parivar: the Reddy parivar)

This remote control by two or three Parivars will further erode whatever little bit of self identity that the BJP had.

It is an insult to lakhs of hardworking BJP workers who have been neglected, to choose a person to head the youth wing merely because he is a Gandhi.

Maneka is a BJP MP. Her son too is a BJP MP. Isn’t this dynastic rule?

Maneka was a cabinet minister in the Vajpayee govt. Her son is slated to become the National Youth President. Isn’t this dynastic rule?

  13. huttadallihutta Says:

For the people, by the people, of the people. Is what democracy is all about. Right??

In your party, it takes a different meaning. Congress is

    For the Gandhi family;

    By the Gandhi family;

    Of the Gandhi family.

Varun Gandhi is just one head of a wing in BJP. BJP’s existence is not because of this one person. BJP existed when there was no Gandhi in party, it will exist when this Gandhi will walk out of party.

BJP is simply using the age old philosophy of ” mullanna mullindale tegibeku”

May be the Gowda drama has had its effect, suddenly we find a sympathiser for LAKHS of hardworking BJP workers!!!! Well, if it is insulting to lakhs of hardworking BJP workers if Varun Gandhi is chosen to head the National Youth Wing, what do you say of a situation in Congress??? Was the party built only by your madam and her son? No, right?

Simple, let me put it simply for you…

Madhav Rao Scindia – Jyotirdaadtiya Scindia is not dynastic rule.

Rajesh Pilot- Sachin Pilot is not dynastic rule.

Kapil Sibal – His son when he comes into Congress, is not dynastic rule.

Bangarappa – Kumar Bangarappa is not dynastic rule.

There are other examples too, but let me stop here and tell you why.

Because these bachchas will not have the entire party bending backwards to accomodate them in whatever nonsense they do.

Because they will not be made heads of any party wing just because their dads were prominent persons in Congress.

Because they will not be begged by the PM in an open forum to join the cabinet if they are not part of the cabinet already.

Because their photos will not adorn the publicity materials of the party, no matter for what reason the publicity is done.

Because the chair of PM/CM will not be kept waiting for them, just for their yes.

You are getting the drift, right??

So Maneka being a minister in Vajapayee govt and her son becoming the National Youth wing president is not dynastic rule. By any yardstick of RATIONAL imagination.

But we know what imagination the CONgies have, dont we?

  14. Simple Says:

    hutta

Lol lol. nice to know people like you, who post who write unintended humourous pieces, over and over again.

BS Yeddiyurapp’s son getting an MP ticket is not dynastic rule
Vijayaraje scindia’s daughter being made CM of Rajasthan in not dynastic rule.
Bommai’s son being made minister in karnataka cabinet is not dynastic rule.
Pramod Mahajan’s daughter getting a ticket for MLA elections in Maharashtra is not dynastic rule.

The entire reddy family being made cabinet ministers is not dynastic rule.

Maneka Gandhi’s son being made youth president is not dynastic rule!

There are several more in BJP.

Cong never claimed it was against dynastic rule. It was the BJP which had screamed hysterically about dynastic politics and now every other leader in BJP seems to be a strong supporter of DYNASTY.

    hahhaha.. keep the rambling on.

  15. huttadallihutta Says:

Well, I am glad I returned the favour to you…

I explained you what dynastic rule is. If you still cannot understand, what can anyone do??
