Hugs, kisses, smiles ‘n’ the sweet smell of success

The only feeling headier than the last question paper tackled successfully, is the receipt of better than expected results. At Mount Carmel College in Bangalore on Friday, a bunch of girls are cock-a-hoop on learning how they fared in the PUC examinations.

In our society, marks and rote learning have become measures of success. Little attention is given to creativity, scientific inquiry and pursuing ones interests. Everyone is waiting to become a doctor or a software engineer. Those who cannot make it end up taking other subjects (alas, such as mathematics, physics, economics, history etc.) No wonder, Indian IT and BPO companies are engaged in menial jobs (a.k.a. software coolie jobs) while all the “real stuff” happens in the US of A or Europe (in universities such as MIT, Stanford, Princeton etc. and tech companies Google, Volkswagen, Boeing, Airbus, Microsoft research etc. there).

Still I believe, our primary schools and PU colleges are very good (although they can be improved too), not much complaint about them. The real transformation from man to monkey happens after PUC in our undergrad colleges and so-called universities (which are supposed to be centers of excellence, education and research but not sure if any research happens in any of the state universities). When will we (if ever) have a good higher education system that would really transform these young Indians (who are smart, aspiring and second to none) so that they all can achieve their dreams?

63 years after independence (18 years after economic Independence) and counting……hmmmm

Looks like standard of MCC has come down quite a bit ;)

hey mr. div your perception of todays generation is not correct. infact today you see more students walking other ways. today colleges have a broad range of subjects to offer. at one time animation was a simple thought for indians and today you see more and more collages offering courses in animation. same is happening with other fields. so better you go out in the wild and see what others do. its not like your generation who was totally moron and dumb boxes. we are dynamic.

mr. karihaida you seem to be a person who has been frozen into time. my society is dynamic where new ideas keep coming in and we accept what we think is good not like your old generation who needed parents spoon-feeding. if you wanna a rotting frozen society, you better take a pic of your favorite part of indian society and everyday look at it. Please leave us alone and let my society be dynamic where ideas keep coming from every direction.
you are among those who are tradition fanatics. hollow tradition with no real meaning. you useless oldies have ruined dynamic indian society.

Call me narrow minded, bigoted and whatever you want, but I hope that these students are Kannadigas.

I hope these students do not forget to speak Kannada.

In a few years, the children of outsiders in Bangalore will grow up. Most of them will not know a word of Kannada, even after having lived in Karnataka all along. The scenario is really scary. All efforts must be made to ensure that ousiders’ children learn the Kannada language.

Dream on, Gaby. Patriarchalism is here to stay.

    @ akram

dude, please think before you make personal comments on a public forum! I wonder how the moderators allowed a post that personally abuses somebody.

I agree that young Indians are dynamic and talented, my comment was not about them but about the education we have in the so-called colleges and universities. You can go ahead and check online any ranking of the universities world-wide and you will know the truth. Except for IISc/IITs (which also usually don’t figure in top 250 or so according to many rankings) hardly any university makes it to the list. The fact that India always signs “deals” with developed countries to get ships and planes is a testimonial of this fact. You can also find online what CNR Rao, one of India’s greatest scientists, has to say about current state of higher education in India. You can check the impact factor of scientific research that comes out of India.

While “courses” like fashion technology, culinary skills, animation, film technologies might have their own value, there are far more serious and much important areas of study that play a bigger role in a society.

By the way, there is a good chance that you have called your own generation (which would of course include you) as being moron by abusing my generation as being moron!!!!

I completely aggre with div .Pure science is in its death bed,Everybody even with a pass in pu wants to become a software enginear.students studying other courses are looked down in front of students styding be.Before reccesion software and computer orineted courses was hot favourite now animation has taken this position. Most of the parnets and students wont see the interest and ability of children they just see the “TREND” OR “SCOPE” of the subject .You see hugeof students in eng colleges only countable no of studnets will be there at degree colleges.Students and parents has to understand the importance of styding other subjects .
