GOVINDA K. writes: It is blithely said that the people deserve the kind of leaders they get. But two recent incidents of the misbehavior of newly elected elected corporators in Mysore shows that there is more than an element of luck or chance involved in the election of such leaders.
That “We, the People” are more responsible than we would like to claim culpability for it.
In one case, Congress corporator of ward No.53 Anwar Baig, alias Aftab fired at Nasir, a tenant of a house at Rajiv Nagar on December 1. According to the police, Baig, who is also into real estate activities, reportedly wanted to move into the house, and was exerting pressure on Nasir to vacate.
Nasir lodged a compliant with Udayagiri Police, but inspector Dhananjay said the accused was absconding. A case had been booked against Baig for attempt to murder and under the Arms Act.
And in the other case, Mahadesh aka Avva Maadesha, a JDS corporator from V.V. Mohalla ward, is said to have slapped the driver of a Mysore City Corporation van carrying garbage and used vulgar language. The driver Jagadeesh tried to lodge a complaint with V.V. Mohalla police station. But the police refused to register the complaint.
The incident took place on November 27. When police took no action, Jagadeesh approached Corporation commissioner P. Manivannan through the corporation workers’ association. The police have now registered a complaint but have claimed that the said corporator is absconding.
These two incidents pose a number of questions. Why do we elect such representatives? How do they go around with guns and revolvers? Why do they have no control over their tongues and limbs? How do they manage to “abscond” at the drop of a hat? Why do the police seem so reluctant to act against such leaders?
And above all, is there no way we can evolve a mechanism to recall such recalcitrant representatives instead of being stuck with them for the next five years?
Remember? Haaloorige uLidavanE gowda!! That’s where our political system has become to.
This begs much bigger question – Why did our society reach such a low point? Honest answer is…majority of the society is corrupt. Majority of the society tries to bend/twist/break the rules. Politicians only represent our societies…
Isn’t it the core difference between ‘developed’ and ‘chaotic’ countries?
After all, following the rules is not such a dumb thing to do. Sooner we realize, better for our country.

The main reason such people (criminals) are elected as representatives is because a majority of the people who can make a change and cannot be bought over by money or gifts or liquor, etc., (the educated class) dont bother to cast their votes and the ones that do vote (the illiterate and the poor) are easily bought over by money and gifts and are treated as vote banks by such scoundrels.

* Real estate rivalry leads to blood bath * Victims from Paduvarahalli were hiding in farm house * Corporator Mahadesh main accused
Hunsur, May 15 (MRS&KK)- In a gory incident, two persons from Paduvarahalli in Mysore were hacked to death here last night and three others were injured following a dispute over a land deal.
Rajesh alias Gandhi (21) and Ramu (26) died on the spot when a gang allegedly led by Mysore City Corporator Mahadesh attacked them with longs.
Sunil, one of the survivors in the attack, who is undergoing treatment at the Government Hospital here, told the Police this morning that Mahadesh (JD-S), also known as Avva Madesh, led a gang of eight which attacked them in a farm house on the outskirts of the town behind APMC between 11.30 pm and 1 am.
Another survivor Devu underwent treatment in Mysore, it is learnt.
Rajesh alias Gandhi and Ramu had a dispute with Mahadesh over a real estate deal.
The survivor told the Police that the gang chased the victims around and attacked them brutally with weapons.
The murder took place at the farm of Muddappa, who has leased it out to one Poovaiah, residing at Hunsur.
Superintendent of Police Rama Subba, Additional SP Ramesh and Dy.SP Vijay Dambal visited the spot this morning.
According to a statement of Sunil recorded by Inspector Sundararaj at the hospital, Ashok, Rajesh alias Gandhi, Ramu, Srinivas, Devu and himself (Sunil) came to Hunsur on May 12 after learning that Mahadesh gang was planning to eliminate them. They travelled to Hunsur in a Tata Sumo (KA 01 P — 1440) and the driver Dinesh and his friend ‘Jayalakshmipuram’ Shivu returned to Mysore after dropping them at Ganesha Lodge.
The next day, however, Rajesh alias Gandhi called his friends Mahesh and Sandy in Mysore asking them to suggest a safe hideout as they may be spotted by the rival gang if they continued to stay in the hotel.
Mahesh and Sandy, coaches at a Mysore Gym, rushed to Hunsur and took Rajesh and friends to the farm of Poovaiah, the friend of Sandy.
Meanwhile, Mahadesh gang was on the lookout for Rajesh gang and was trying to elicit information about them from driver Dinesh, who had dropped them at Hunsur.
It is only yesterday that Rajesh called Dinesh asking him to bring Rs. 3,000 as they had no money. That was how Mahadesh gang, which was closely following Dinesh, could know the whereabouts of Rajesh gang.
According to Sunil’s statement to Police, Mahadesh came to the farm after 11.30 pm along with his brother Manju, nephews Ambi and Krishna alias Keke, Palahalli Satish, Vontikoppalu Ravi, Chandra, Paduvarahalli Shivakumar alias Kala, to the farm house and called out Rajesh and his gang.
As Rajesh and his friends did not open the doors, Mahadesh and his gang, armed with longs, broke into the house and chased the gang members who ran out.
Sunil said that he too was attacked first, but later Mahadesh advised his accomplices to spare him (Sunil) as he was innocent. Mahadesh gave Sunil Rs. 500 and asked him to leave.
The gang also chopped a sheep and attacked one Kumar, who was an aide of the watchman.
Members of Mahadesh gang chased Rajesh and Ramu, who tried to escape and hacked them to death.
Ashok and Srinivas, members of Rajesh gang, have mysteriously disappeared. Search is on for them.
Shivanna, watchman of the farm who claims that he left for Dharmasthala on May 12, returned to the farm at 5 am today.
They had attacked Mahadesh a month ago
Mysore, May 15 (RK&MRS)- Yesterday’s double murder in Hunsur seems to be a sequel to an attempt made on Mahadesh’s life about a month ago in Mysore.
The gang led by Rajesh alias Gandhi and Ramu had attacked Mahadesh in Vijayashreepura while he was proceeding on a motorbike following a dispute over a site.
Mahadesh, who escaped unhurt, was planning to take a revenge against Rajesh and Ramu. Family members of Rajesh, a resident of IV Main, II Cross, Paduvarahalli, say that he had left the house a month ago saying that he would be busy with a friend’s marriage preparations in Bangalore.
He called his mother a week ago to tell that he would return to Mysore after elections.
Ramu was a resident of the same locality on 8th Main, 6th Cross. His mother is an employee of Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Company.
Family members say that Ramu was away from home since 15 days.
2 teams to nab gang
Hunsur, May 15 (KK&MRS)- Superintendent of Police Rama Subba today told Star of Mysore that two Police teams have been formed to arrest the gang led by Mahadesh in connection with the double murder.
Sub-Inspector Mudduraj has registered cases following complaint by Sunil against Mahadesh and seven others for the alleged murder of two members of the rival gang. Brothers of Rajesh and Ramu have come from Mysore to take the bodies of the victims after the post-mortem.
