CHURUMURI POLL: Malaysia ban, right or wrong?

In a move replete with diplomatic possibilities, Malaysia has “suspended” the recruitment of all categories of workers, including professionals, from India and Bangladesh. The work permits of existing workers from the two countries will also not be renewed with effect from the beginning of this New Year. The move will hit the nearly two-million-strong Indian workforce employed in the construction, information technology, and financial services sectors.

Although no specific reason has been assigned, the timing of the move and the manner in which it targets India although Indians make up only 8 per cent of the two million foreign workers, arouses suspicion that the move may be a followout over the recent trouble over ethnic Tamils. Malaysia may claim that the ban applies to Bangladesh as well, but it is difficult not to entertain the feeling that it is just a convenient afterthought a small Islamic nation.

The announcement came just hours after defence minister A.K. Antony had left Kuala Lumpur after a three-day visit. In November, there were mass protests by the ethnic Indians, led by non-governmental Hindu Rights Action Forum (Hindraf), against the alleged marginalisation of the community.

Questions: Is Malaysia’s move right or wrong? Is Malaysia correct in cracking down on trouble makers thus? In a globalised world, is a country well within its rights to bar people of specific nationalities from working on its soil? Will Malaysia’s move result in a diplomatic row with India, especially given the kind of statements that Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi has made? Are Indian and Bangladeshi workers paying the price for Karunanidhi’s loose tongue? How should India respond?

YVONNE FOONG: “A wise man once said every society is judged by how it treats it’s least fortunate amongst them.”

BYTEMUNCHER: “I wonder what will happen to all the Mamak shops and MNCs that employ foreign workers.”

  1. Andy Says:

I think its not even 48 hours that India’s Foreign Minister Pranab Muhkerjee has returned from Malaysia and that country unleashes this decision ! So much for ‘super’ power India !

The decision is stupid, discriminatory and to a large extent self defeating exercise given the shortage of talent.

  2. E Raviraja Gowda T V Says:

Malaysia tourism survives on Indian tourist…
Malaysian snacks and chocolates are flooding the indian market…

Just boycott all these, and see the results!

  3. indian Says:

malaysia is progressing because of hindu indians… otherwise what the muslims there cant even do a small work also…. they are just like there barbaric arab counterparts….

  4. pragmatic Says:

@ Andy. it was A K Antony and not Pranab Mukherjee. But not much difference, though, as to who had been to Malaysia. Let it be even our own ‘honest’ PM.
India should have woken up right when Malaysia started bulldozing the temples. But how would it? for it is ruled by the ‘secular’ UPA…
and most of those suffering there are Hindus.

  5. King of Hill Says:

I think most of the ills affecting India and its Super-Nationalist can be addressed by India declaring itself Hindu Rashtra(Which is what reality is)

Get it done with it, rather than whining for ever.

  6. Aashadabhoothi Says:

Malaysia is moving towards the other side of the globalized world as depicted in Samuel Huntington’s ‘Clash of Civilizations’. Malaysia is also inching slowly towards radical wahhabi islam. Malaysia will soon be left behind in the technological world.

  7. Prasad Says:

    unlike the gulf nations ;

where talented professionals cant be sent back due to the non availability of qualified personal .( most of the citizens are not literate )

where menial job workers will not be sent back as most ARABS are lazy and dont take up jobs which demean thier rich status,

MALAYSIA can afford to kick out Indians and have the requiements filled in through other friendly Islamic Counties in Asia and Africa.

So what’s the solution ; to start with all Tourist operators should cancel planned tours to that country , secondly all imports particulary of Palm Oil should be stopped.this will affect the economy and will make them realise the folly

  8. Aatmasakshi Says:

An AFP story on the same issue says the ban is limited to foreign temple priests, temple musicians and temple sculptors. If that is the case, then the ban on Indian workers in these categories is very provocative, probably even a sign of the Islamisation of a secular country.

India must react cautiously because it is a sovereign country’s prerogative on who it allows and who is doesn’t. Hasn’t the United States’ immigration policy undergone a transformation after 9-11? At the same time, New Delhi must ensure Karunanidhi does not go ballistic again.

What will be interesting to watch is the BJP’s reaction. Will it support Malaysia’s treatment of “minorties” in that country? Or will it see it as an insult to Hindus and demand a tit-for-tat?

  9. aruna urs Says:

Prasad you are almost there. 30% of all the private employment is reserved for bhumis and there was stiff competition for the remaining jobs between locals and foreigners. Last month they stopped issuing visas for bangladeshis (this negates your argument about jobs filled by islamic countries).
However, what this policy does is to create more employment opportunity for malaysian Hindus (albeit almost all will be construction or prata (mamak) shop jobs).
It is politically a very smart move as it effectively robs poor Indians to pay for Indian origin Malaysians!
I hope crowd that supported KRV will also support Badawi!

  10. Ram Says:

Indians in the news everywhere for the wrong reasons. Indian leaders boast that India is a giant like China. If Chinese were a problem no country dares kicking them out. That tells you about India. How come Indians are such pain in the arse in Srilanka, Singapore and Malaysia.

  11. T.Shetty Says:

Malaysia is a sovereign country and they decide what they want. I wonder how we would have reacted if we had millions of ‘foreign’ workers and en ethnic clash! Eventually market forces will win and things will workout. We just have to stop poking our nose into their business.

  12. Nastika Says:

Malayasia doesn’t want to become Sri Lanka.

  13. Anonymous Coward Says:

This is another step closer towards Malaysia becoming an un secular hardcore Islamic state. With Malaysia gone, Turkey and Indonesia will be the last standing secular countries with Muslim majority.

  14. Gowri Says:

Yenri thumbaa dina ayithu. No news from Murthy Angadi?

  15. Athreya Says:

It will hurt Malaysia. The tourism from India will hit it hard apart from the worker shortfall — unless Indonesia-Phillipines is asked to fill the gap. India & Bangladesh account for 16% of the 2.2 mil foreign work force. Malay government has a penchant for banning. This is a knee-jerk reaction from this diminiutive country..

  16. Bhaskar Chatterjee Says:

    Churumuri got it wholly wrong.

Where is India Press, psuedo cabal who lecture on “Palestine”?

What we are seeing is a growth of Wahabi Islamism in Malaysia, which was so far hailed as a “moderate” Islamic Country. Not only Hindus are being subjected to this kind of second class citizenship, all non-Muslims are coming under attack.

You know what will happen if Indian Press, psuedo cabal (Churumuri included) keeps mum?

It will letigimize equally aggressive hindutva rhetoric. And soon, in India also, we will see mirror, where minorities will be treated the same way.

As far as what India needs to do, WE MUST CONFRONT MALAYSIA HEAD ON, AND PUNISH IT with whatever economic, political means we have as a nation, and individual.

CPIM, Cong did NOT utter a single word on huge growth of Islamization in Bangladesh, just across the border from Calcutta. INSTEAD OF EXPORTING TOLERANCE, SECULARISM, they kept mum for MUSLIM VOTEBANK IN India.

Its just a matter of time, they will loose ground in West Bengal, and BJP will be strengthened.

  17. Anonymous Coward Says:

    >>New Delhi must ensure Karunanidhi does not go ballistic again.

Karunanidhi himself will refrain from making any statements as it will hurt his vote bank…secularism you see!

  18. E Raviraja Gowda T V Says:

    Anonymous Coward
    Please note
=that Malaysia is a declared “islamic” country, so the word secular does not find mention in thier constitution.
=malaysia recently has signed free trade policy with Pakistan
=it is true that they are a sovereign country, we cant poke our nose etc…but what we CAN do is to ban import of malaysian goods like: Furniture/ Palm oil/ food products/ cosmetics which are flooding the indian market. Also make a pledge that you shall not visit that country for tourism purpose…

  19. Preetham Says:

People, Politicians, Media… in India don’t bother about Indian Citizens residing in India being unemployed, Harrased, denied justice, Killed.. etc etc.. but always are ready to create a big fuss about the so called Indians living abroad who dont give a damn about India or Indians.

  20. Gokulam 3rd Stage Says:

We showed our collective b**ls when that coup happened in Fiji. I’ll swim in the San Francisco Bay before the Indian government grows some to take on Malaysia.

  21. subashi Says:

Malaysia is going into intense islamization which curb non muslim to practise other religion, they curb the hindu priest, musician, sculptors. When the Hindraf ask for help from Indian to interfere ,Indian gov refused to do so , now Indian are now receiving action from this Muslim racist Government of Malaysia, there are so canning to miginalised to Indian specifically because there are Hindus and from Indian origin, Now you India learned the lesson from this Malaysia fanatic islamic goverment.

  22. subashi Says:

Nov you Indian better imposed your action on Malaysia so that they are not dared to marginalised their own malaysia Indian ,India are superpower,Malaysia should able to listen to it.Indian should react trade embargo, stoping Indian to visit Malaysia, stop buying the Malaysia product, let them learn the lesson from booming superpower of Indian.

  23. Faldo Says:

@Bhaskar Chatterjee – It is true that ethnic Hindus comprise about 8% of the total population of Malaysia, but the figure Churumuri is talking about is the number of Indian foreign workers which is about 8% or 160000 out of 2 million.

@GK3S – The options India has are limited. Diplomatic channels are the best bet followed a mild form of trade retaliation. However a trade ban cannot be unilaterally imposed without hurting our own interests as it is likely to be reciprocated. Anything more agressive than that is unthinkable. Moreover any aggressive posture can spill over into further harassment against ethnic Indians and workers already present.

  24. Bevu Bella Says:

With reaming billion population, India is churning out engineers, doctors, IT trained in thousands, unable to employ them locally, they are everywhere creating immigration and nationality problems. The solution is that India slows its breeding prcoess and producing more and more humans.

  25. E Raviraja Gowda T V Says:

    Trade ban…Diplomatic channel….
= these guidelines are for only those who follow them…US of A still has a ban on Palm oil, as FDA still considers it “not edible for human use”- obviously due to the pressure from sunflower oil lobby
= America also has restrictions on import of Malaysian furniture…citing some strange type of termite, fungus…
= America/ Israel still have heavy security checks for those who visited Malaysia, in the past 5 years…
anyway, fearing all this Malaysia has already denied the earlier report of Ban!

  26. Rizwan Says:

It has to be remembered that Malaysia is not India. Malaysians do not tolerate Indians (nor the Chinese), definitley not the Tamilians whose pedigree is wellknown…they better settle down in Australia or Canada or U or Singapore.
Sammy Velu made billions by serving your own interests but now that he is an outcaste, suddenly everyone of you is asking for justice!.
BTW, your central minister came here on his own….probably seeking publicity as a so called trouble shooter.
Well, we are so small comapred to India but gave you a kick in where it was due.

  27. neet Says:

I just have a question to ask fellow indians from india. How fair is your country towards each other ethnics? Ppl from Chennai do not get along from Ppl from Delhi? I have personally witness them of not getting along and can’t even seat in same restaurant! The Delhi community thinks their are far superior from any other city in India!! What do u say on this.. both are hindus’s but just the skin colour makes them different???? this is just one example.. .. OH the biggest example…. the partition of India into 3??? OH MY GOD… what is this… Muslim became Pakistani.. Hindu’s became India and Bengoli became Bangladesh!! This is classic example of how Indians are a real trouble maker!

Killings happens between Hindu & Muslim in India.. which till now Indian Government can’t solve the racial & religious issue? Then comes to poverty.. no doubt India economy is big.. but the poverty rate is high!! Beggers are every where and not civilized!! Even those who are educated are not civilized.. no manners!! talk loud… smell stink and the list goes on.
I think this is more barbaric!!! At least we Malaysians have better standard.. And if India is sooooo GOOOD why are guys going out to work overseas??? Even the richest Indian men does not stay in india and all the rich indian prefer to be NRI!! Is real JOKE!

  28. dhans Says:

@Rizwan- glad with your views. FYI, the central minister came their for defense ties!!! He isn’t aware of stabbing behind our face like cowards

@neet – u r correct, but most of us prefer to stay abroad just to earn good amount of money, as in our country only minorities gets reservation not like Malaysia, where they are discriminated.
I think u r blind folded. i have visited Malaysia twice and have traveled a lot there. I have seen beggars even there (except KL). India is no where worse, only thing is we dont show off our gr8ness and hide worse part as you ppl do.

  29. E Raviraja Gowda T V Says:

    well said,
in Malaysia, Bhumiputras, sons of the soil…majority get all the reservation!

  30. Sena Says:

Well .. I have nothing to say ..

To kill a snake cutting the whole jungle !!!

well thats Malaysian(Malays) attitude .. some time back I was reading a Minister said in public meetings that “If you cant protest while getting raped then better lay down and enjoy ”

    Isnt these explains ?

However this ban on Indian workers seems to be a hoax

  31. sisya Says:

    >>”How come Indians are such pain in the arse in Srilanka, Singapore and Malaysia.”

    –They’re all kongas.

  32. Mayura Says:

Exactly, the problems faced by Tamils in Malaysia is being projected as a Hindu problem. The GOI should not fall for this ruse, other wise we will have another Sri Lanka kind of situation on our hands and Pukis/Chinese will be too happy to fish in troubled waters

  33. Mayura Says:

This is similar to the LTTE claiming to be a Hindu Organisation fighting Buddhist intransigence, whereas in reality the LTTE is mainly composed of Christians. In fact, it is a fight between crypto tamil christians and buddhists. If GOI had any brains it should have decided long back whose side it should take

  34. sisya Says:

In the first place, India had no business dictating to Malaysia how to treat its citizens – whether of Indian origin or not. Even after their minister asked us to bugger off the Indian media kept fanning it… what were we thinking? There is a reason why we have Indians working in Malaysia and not the other way round… and no.. its not because they need our services.. its because India cant afford to pay its citizens what Malaysia pays. No wonder Malaysia decides to use its muscle.. Kudos to Malaysia for cocking a snook at our jingoistic idiots.

@Aruna Urs – I’m one of the ‘crowd’ that supports KRV and I wholeheartedly support Malaysia on this. If Indians cant behave themselves when abroad, they better accept it when they have their arses kicked.

  35. Anonymous Guy Says:

    Sariyage hellidhira…

  36. Anonymous Guy Says:

The tamils and their separatist agenda.

Think about what will happen in Bangalore in 20 years time? Once they have reached a critical mass – will they start ‘asserting’ their tamil pride and similar shit here?

Then it wont be just about some statue of some tamil saint etc.

  37. Sadat Says:

    Dear sir

    Assalamu Alaikum

This is a timely decision by Malaysia to curtail LTTE activities in the country. Chinese would gladly replace Indian workers and they work harder anyway.

  38. E Raviraja Gowda T V Says:

Interesting…read what Prime Minister John Howard – Australia had to say!
Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.

Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation’s mosques.

Quote: ‘ IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians.’ ?

‘ This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom’

‘ We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society . Learn the language!’

‘ Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.’

‘ We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.’

‘ This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom,

‘ If you aren’t happy here then LEAVE. We didn’t force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.’

  39. Malaysian Says:

I’m a Malaysian Muslim of Malay origin. I don’t see the problem having Indian in Malaysia, anyway they are Malaysian as me. We never discriminate them as they also enjoy the same life as everybody. It’s a matter of whether you work hard or not.

Every races pays the same price for sugar, everybody is given the same education. So what is the fuss?
