Cold is gold for the unwashed television masses

The unseen hand of Rupert Murdoch in skewing the vision of news television in India, especially in the vital Hindi space, is a subject no media analyst, critic or observer has yet turned her spotlight on. Thanks to the headway made by the execrable output of Star News, news channel after Hindi news channel, has taken the same low, tabloid road in the name of giving what the viewer wants.

Villagers chasing snakes, ghosts drinking milk, supernatural incidents, election results as qawwalis, etc, all are dished out, Ekta Kapoor style, in an endless flurry of jump cuts as the distinction between news and entertainment is very nearly wiped out by head honchos with an eye on the meters.

Amit Sharma captures a moment of pure magic on Aaj Tak, which comes out of the respectable India Today stable, and which too has gone the same way in its quest to remain at the top. “Amitabh Bachchan ko thandh lagi,” reads the “Breaking News” super at the bottom. Translation: Amitabh Bachchan catches a cold.

Wrong translation. It means Amithabh Bachahan feels/feeling cold. To catch cold is to acquire cold as a ailment, which is not the case here.

That’s the latest news. How many times did he sneeze, what medicines he took, everything should have been given.

Wonder why the Chinese Communist Party’s Indian mouthpiece – The Hindu – and its gang of hacks – Sid Varadarajan, Sukumar Muralidharan, and their commissar N. Ram don’t criticise Rupert Murdoch and his Fox News? Well it wasn’t actually so at one time. Frontline used to turn red in the face (an achievement for a flaming red rag) over Murdoch till about 10 years ago, when Murdoch came to a working arrangement with the party in Beijing, in return for broadcasting rights of sorts in China. Since then the Beijing party’s mouthpiece has gone entirely silent on Fo(au)x News and Murdoch. Also did you notice, there is never a Tibet story on Fox or Murdoch’s rags and networks? The media dons down South Sun and its now estranged cousin K-TV are clearly cast in the Fox mould and intend to use media shamelessly to drive a partisan message, as does Kairali (CPI(M)) TV. Anyone care to find out how Nandigram was reported on Kairali TV?

It aint been easy sailing for Murdoch in China. Please read ‘Rupert’s Adventures in China
    By Bruce Dover’.

  7. Anonymous Guy Says:

I shudder to think of the time when all news will be dished out Fox style.

Like most of the TV news is presented on fox in the US, propaganda style – where they have even stopped bothering to hide their bias.

  8. Raveesh Kumar Says:

Dont you think TV9 Kannada is going Aaj Tak way??
