CHURUMURI POLL: URA, smooth, smart or stupid?

He has himself publicly stated that he had his disagreements with the Janata Dal (Secular) as a party and some of the decisions taken by H.D. Deve Gowda and H.D. Kumaraswamy. He stood as a candidate when JDS put up “outsider” Rajeev Chandrashekhar for a Rajya Sabha, prompting Kumaraswamy, as chief minister, to ask “Who is he?”. And he has had the mortification of having his contribution to the State and even Kannada questioned by HDK.

Yet, U.R. Anantha Murthy had no qualms in sitting to the left of HDK, and to the right of H.D. Deve Gowda, while releasing a booklet titled “Aftermath of Friendship with BJP—A retrospection” in Bangalore yesterday.

Should our “public intellectuals” be weather vanes like politicians, who have no firm stand, no firm beliefs, no firm principles, no firm loyalties or enmities? Or is U.R. Anantha Murthy a supersmart intellectual, who is not stuck in his position and ideology, swallows his pride, and moves with the flow, depending on the “secular” situation?

Does this kind of weather-vane intellectualism enhance the image of intellectuals among the aam janata? Or does it only expose our public intellectuals and contribute to the raging cynicism about their motives and motivations?

  1. Desi Homosapien Says:

After hearing him justify renaming of Bangalore as Bengaluru on national television about 2-3 years ago by citing how chair becomes “chairu” and table becomes “tabelu” in anglicised Kannada or Kannadaized English, I am confused over URA’s intellectual depth (or hollowness). Sometimes a person’s intellectual depth can be confused with intellectual hollowness or vice versa.

  2. bhup Says:

self-hate is a dangerous thing. This guy is so obsessed with his ‘secular’ mission that he can side with anybody to take on the BJP.On second thoughts,he is ‘at home’ with the father-son duo who can go to any length to get to power.URA is entitled to make an ass of himself..

  3. induramesh Says:

    They deserve each other.

  4. Satish Says:

Apart from members of the Deve Gowda clan, UR Anantha Murthy is probably one of the most hated or discussed ‘pseudo Kannada intellectuals’ still alive.
In the past, any article on the above or other crooked politicians especially from the Congress-I or corruption in Karnataka, or recent controversies of BJP govt and it’s Reddy, Cheddi and Shoba or discussions regarding poor Kanndiga’s continued struggles despite local organizations like KRV…etc have all created a deluge of feedback/comments and this topic once again looks set to create another record for Churumuri!

It must be noted that U. R. Ananthamurthy made an unsuccessful run for the Lok Sabha elections and later for again the Rajya Sabha elections. Obviously, he is once again eyeing on Gowda’s support and vote base for the upcoming elections.

With due respect, URA was long ago a man with great thoughts, radical views and wisdom, however some suspect his marriage to a Christian girl called Esther to have been the beginning of a complete transformation. Proactively mixing and lobbying with third rate politicians seems to have catalyzed his transformation. If one analyses all the famous true Kannadiga intellectuals and great littérateurs, almost all have avoided politics and focused on a strong streak of neutrality from Kuvempu to Bendre to Masti to Karanth. Perhaps old age is creeping into URA who has followed the canny Gowda’s in practice, even to the extent of appealing to hardcore Islamists.

It is pretty interesting to note the wide variety of comments on the last article on this Kannada litterateur who is sadly increasingly portraying himself as nothing but a shrewd politician that sails with the wind.

  6. Pulikeshi the last Says:

Cannot wait to read what Ravindra Reshme will say in the next issue of Vikranta Karnataka about URA’s latest act of sophistry.

If not the Rajya Sabha, why not at least the Vidhana Parishath to continue the do-nothing tradition of Kambara and Siddhalingayya?

  7. Not A Witty Nick Says:

    inyaar serskotaare? :P

  8. sathya Says:

It was expected. Intelligent people know where to go , when to go, with whom to go. Ordinary mortals cannot do it. They are fools. Congratulations to URA. Nice to see him seated in between the former PM and the PM-to be.

  9. Prashanth Says:

JDS eevaga Huchara Santhe aagtha ide :-)

  10. kannadiga:) Says:

Anybody who thinks URA is a intellectual should be duffer himself.

  11. Thyampanna Shettru Says:

You remember the saying – “Vinaasha Kaale …..”

I’m really concerned about URA’s mental health. It takes some serious mental state to sit in between two flithiest, political scumbags.

  12. Ramesh Halebeedu Says:

Is Anything different expected from U.R. Ananthamurthy? He is begging for a ticket either to Parliment or to Assembly or to City Council or even to grama panchayithi; but so far no political party cared for him. URA is in a dream that people vote for him by thinking he is an “intellectual”. Bad luck to him, his colours are revealed a long time back and even illiterates know that he is a “pseudo-intellectual”. Lot more pseudos – pseudo-secularist, pseudo-writer etc.

  13. Tathagata Mukherji Says:

Match made in Heaven – Sickularism #1.

We have a proverb in Bengali which roughly translates into (no disrespect, demeaning please)

    A Jewel knows another Jewel
A xxx knows a dirty stem.

  14. Cheddi Chikka Says:

URA is a great intellectual and a liberal humanist. Not many people who write here understand the socio-political dynamics behind URA joining JDS. The BJP and the Congress party represent the micro minority rich landowning fuedal class. The BJP was catapulted into power by this class consisting of capitalists, zamindars, mining, liquor lobby, Industrialists, real estate and hindu fundamentalist matadhipathis. A lot of money was pumped in to buying the election victory for the BJP so that they can protect the intrests of this minority rich class. The middle class is coopted by this rich class to perpetuate the exploitation on the landless labrourers (the raithas), the urban poor and religious minorities.
JD(S) is one of the few parties which give a voice to this section of the people. Their policies are friendly towards this populace which consists of 65% of our total population. One of the biggest flaws of JDS and deve gowda was his unabashed patronizing of his son. This caused the party to lose in the previous elections. He also lost some exemplary leaders like Siddharamaih in this process. But unfortunately for the oppressed and marginalised JDs still remains the only voice and hope. On the national level JDS has coopted with the Ambedkarite BSP and the left parties.
URA has always stood for socialism and equality. He was a student of Lohia and socailism runs deep inside him. He also stands for anti-caste. Being born a brahmin URA could clearly see the poisonous caste system in action. A system which relegated a major chunk of the citizens of our country as sub human and treated them worse than animals. URA critiqued this system through many of his works. His famous award winning novel and literary masterpiece ‘Samskara’ speaks eloquently about the travails of the Brahmin community caught up in arcane practices and their difficulty to come to terms with modern liberal egalitarian values. The BJP and Sangh Parivar represents this view even in our age. URA considered himself as a ‘Critical Insider’ when he wrote Samskara, but there were no takers for him within the upper caste intelligentia. Unlike the french who accepted revolutionary writers like voltaire and roussea, the Kannada politicians and intellegentia co-opted with the expoliting class. Given this situation of intellectual bankruptcy and moral deliquency of the elite class, it was a prudent decision from URA to side with JD(S). For all those singing the doonsday note for JD(S), those who understand people’s movements and class struggle can clearly tell you that JD(S) is down but not out. Just wait for the general elections.

  15. Janasamanya Says:

When I was a high-school student, elders in my family and surroundings used to speak highly of the authors and writers including Beechi, who was considered as a ‘rebel’. Now what we have is the URA kind. Ready not only to sit beside but also sit at the foot of anybody, any party just to hang on to some power at this age, when one is supposed to be passing on some wisdom to others.

  16. Vinay Says:

As someone mentioned above, only JDS will take him. JDS can do anything, as they demonstrated yesterday in North Bangalore. Lots of people around me who were struggling, puking, sweating and fuming in the traffic swore an oath that they would never ever vote JDS in their life. Unfortunately public memory is short. One cannot say how many of them will remember yesterday 4 years down the line..

  17. prasad Says:

” For all those singing the doonsday note for JD(S), those who understand people’s movements and class struggle can clearly tell you that JD(S) is down but not out. Just wait for the general elections ”

This statement would obviously QUALIFY for the JOKE of the MILLENIMUM and the award will be presented on April 1 st.

  18. shyodha Says:

    Chikka ಹೀಗೆ ಕೊಚ್ಚಿದ:

=>His famous award winning novel and literary masterpiece ‘Samskara’ speaks eloquently about the travails of the Brahmin community caught up in arcane practices and their difficulty to come to terms with modern liberal egalitarian values. The BJP and Sangh Parivar represents this view even in our age.<=

    Are you a comedian Chikka?

  23. Manjeri Radhakrishnan Says:

  24. SM Says:

  25. kannadiga:) Says:

  26. Doddi Buddi Says:

    Small Shorts

Wow what an amazing theory! Sounds more like a brain that is 65% non-functional:)

…”The BJP was catapulted into power by this class consisting of capitalists, zamindars, mining, liquor lobby, Industrialists, real estate and hindu fundamentalist matadhipathis. A lot of money was pumped in to buying the election victory for the BJP so that they can protect the intrests of this minority rich class. The middle class is coopted by this rich class to perpetuate the exploitation on the landless labrourers (the raithas), the urban poor and religious minorities…”

Take a bow, Small Shorts. I never knew JD(S) gave a voice for the landless and opressed farmers. Here is my theory: Thanks to leaders like Siddu and some old Mysore leaders JD (S) got its 50-plus votes which was a surprise. Then Dirty Devegowda misread the voters and started what he does best: unabashed land grabbing; promotion of his family; and remaining for ever an obscurantist on all issues. The voters were smart enough to realize this ultra-sanctimonious Gowda family and cut their winning seats by half. Going by Gowda and Sons own rhetoric where they claimed super human governance on all matters the voters should have at least reelected the same number of seats the party got and some more, right? Well that didn’t happen because all these were imaginary achievements toted up by Gowda and family and the voters decided better to go with BJP than these outright cheats and frauds.

URA is of course hankering for some power so that he can rub shoulders with fellow pseuds in Delhi and abroad. The man knows that he did not achieve much in literature because he lacked talent but then he has milked his secular cow for all its worth:)

  27. Raajakeeya Says:

Every one are just trying to write down a party which earned 50 lakh votes in recent assembly election and that too during its worst phase.

They earned 52 lakh votes in 2004 election and 50 Lakh votes in 2008 election.

I don’t know how JDS haters will explain about JDS getting huge number of votes despite of all things which went against it.

  28. CurryHurry Says:

.JD(S) ideology is the best !

    http://www.deccanherald.com/Content/Nov182008/city20081118101395.asp
According to sources, at around 4 pm, Chennigappa was passing by the Mekhri Circle. That coincided with hundreds of JD(S) workers returning after attending ‘Kayakalpa Pratijna Samavesh’ of their party. On seeing, Cheniggappa’s car stranded in the traffic jam, a few JD(S) workers who identified him, picked up a conversation. Within seconds, a group of party workers appeared from nowhere and started attacking the former minister.
They pulled him out of the car, tore his shirt and started hitting him. One of his friends, who was also seated in the car, got down and rushed to help him. The angry workers attacked him also and snatched his watch and gold chain.

  29. Vinay Says:

JD(S) is the best? And DG works for the ‘upliftment of the downtrodden’?? HA HA HA. This is what the ‘best’ JD(S) had to gift us yesterday:

Deve Gowda and Kumaraswamy decided that the time has come for some antics, to keep themselves visible and to ‘show their strength’. What better way to do this than stage a huge huge rally in the centre of the city?

Close to a million people were affected. There were traffic jams upto 4 hours, 6 hours, 7 hours.. one person was stuck for 8 hours. Ambulances were stranded, a severely injured person in Yeshwanthpur was lying on the median with no help forthcoming because the ambulance from MSR Hospital took 2 hours to cover 2 km. JDS workers from villages across the state descended on palace grounds (most of them drunk) climbing the walls, urinating (and some were even defecating) on the pavement, elbowing pedestrians out of the footpath, etc. etc. BMTC buses were ferrying these JDS workers and several commuters waiting on the bus stops began walking after waiting for more than 2 hours.

The JDS spokesperson said that they had initially planned to have the rally in Dobbabellapur/Devanahalli (away from city), but an astrologer told them that Palace grounds was ‘lucky’ for them, hence palace grounds was chosen. Wonder who’s a bigger ‘halli-guggu’ – the JD(S) workers who descended to create havoc yesterday, or the father-son duo themselves.

These are the typical antics one can expect from the ‘best party’ JD(S).

  30. Doddi Buddi Says:

    Politics

sure they got those 50 Lakh votes and 52 Lakh votes. Let’s use some common sense: 50 Lakh votes = 58 seats then and 52 Lakh votes – 28 seats!! Which means even after getting an extra 2-Lakh votes the JD (s) could not win more seats:)) So the number of votes doesn’t mean anything if you go by this statistic! Not in Indian electrorate system any way…Sorry. Moral of the story: making a braindead argument works only once; you have to try something better.

Also URA must be shitting in his pants after seeing ole Chenigappa getting some blows from JD (S) rowdies. URA’s fate is sealed:)

  31. Vinay Says:

God forbid, if DG has his way, we can expect all the ‘namma metro’ pillars to be demolished, the NICE expressway dug up, and an immediate halt to all infrastructure development in the state.

In addition, one can expect DG’s esteemed grandson zooming all around MG – Brigade road in his Hummer, barging into hotels in the dead of night and beating up waiters.

And oh, needless to say, not an inch of bare land will be left in Banashankri 3rd stage which does not belong to DG.

  32. Prashanth Says:

  33. kannadiga:) Says:

    curryhurry,

Chennigappa’s bashing should prove beyond any reasonable doubt the commitment of JD(S) to the democratic and tolerant ethos of our country :).

  36. mysorean Says:

Not sure what to comment on URA. Typpical oppurtunist, if so i am not sure what oppurtunity he is seeing in JD(S) is S stands for SONS? ..
he thinks that whole karnataka agrees on what he says ;)
some time ago he said he dont goto any function where there is a politician.. after few days he went to a JD(S) function held by veerendra kumar and announced that this group is the real JD (S). So now he is with Devegowda and sons :). 60kke araLu maraLu.. idu bahushaha URA ge anvaya agutte annisutte..
Devegowda’s Own JDs pl hit chenniggappa after they were coming out form rally and this is good to URA ;) he has never opened his mouth on this. He never comments on blasts and one community people caught in that act. Rather he goes to a univerity and talks as if he is the care taker of a particular community. If he is so much fancied about politics, y cant he contest election? i am sure his vote will not cross 4 digits.. or thats a big number i am quoting? ;)

  37. Vinay Says:

Cheddi Chikka might even be the Hummer-driving Mannina Maga’s maga’s maga for all you know!!

  38. Raajakeeya Says:

    Doddi Buddi

I just gave statics.Indian electoral system is such that just one lakh more to its previous vote count could end up in JD’s getting Huge number of seats.Anything is possible.

Its funny that a party which is considered as dead by its opponents is giving night mares to them.

In 1998 when SM krishna won with huge majority JDS got 4 seats.Just 4 seats.what happened in next election is past.

So 2008 JDS has got 28 seats only. What happens next is not easy to predict.

  39. Dr. Sree Reddy Says:

Deve Gowda and his children always keep saying that they great concern for the rural folks. Hardly. When they were in power, they just went land-grabbing under various names from the rural people. They did not bother to stop suicides by the farmers. Now they are conducting some rally to show and prove what?

Deve Gowda went to Delhi to protest when the churches were under attack in Managaluuru. He went all the way to Delhi to show his protest.
Why dont they stop these dramas?
    sakappa saaku nimma sahavasa.
Haven’t they made enough money? Is n’t that sufficient?

I dont see why URA is associating himself with JD. Many of his works are very good.

  40. Sandesh Says:

“God forbid, if DG has his way, we can expect all the ‘namma metro’ pillars to be demolished, the NICE expressway dug up, and an immediate halt to all infrastructure development in the state.”

Shit… this is actually very scary. Vinay idea kodbedi..khadeemaru madiye bittaru

  41. dharma Says:

so much good was told about this individual!!??

  42. B.N.GURURAJ Says:

Hunger for power and recognition makes one do very strange things. Governorship for URA did not work during SM Krishna’s time. URA gave up congress. Nobel price bid did not work for whatever reason. Hazar choohe khakar billie Haj gayie. He returned to Mysore as a spent force, only to be tempted back to Bangalore by the filthiest father-son pair of Indian politics! What does URA expect now? A seat in Mysore Municipality?

  43. Pulikeshi the last Says:

URA is busy drafting his first speech at whatever conglomeration he will be inserted into. Adaralli Gandhi praNeetha raashtreeyathe maththu Lohia praNeetha socialism eradu hege Devegowda maththu Kumaaraswamyavaralli nele kandukondive annuvadannu chithrisutthaare.

    School of Scoundrels.

URA is a jackass, so are Devegoda and Ku’Mara’

URA does every other shitty job in this world other than what he got a ‘Ajanapeeta’ award – Writing.

Devegoda is another scumbag, good for land grabbing, petty politics.
He doesn’t even have a little grace that he’d precided over the highest post in this county. He might even ready to do ‘poli’tricks in local panchayat elections. The party he heads – JD(S) where (S) stands for ‘Sons’ is a bunch of jokers.

Ku’Mara’, the less said the better. He is better in doing what he does to Radhika. Heard that she’s pregnent again. Thats good anyway. Nikhil Gowda can load his Hummer with his brothers and go out mid-night bashing of Hotel Waiters.

  50. pulakeshi Says:

Yes me and Pulikeshi the last are different…

The fact is even before B.M.demolition P.Swami Practised untouchability, let URA say he was not aware of that.He is a chemeleon.
Now he had joined the very person who asked”Who is URA”.Long live URA’s secularism.

  54. Shreeharsha Says:

    Mr U.R Anathmurthy

I am a kannadiga and all kannadiga’s know how confused you are. every educated kannadiga know verywell that you are pro naxal.and everybody know that naxals are a menace to this counry.
till bigining of 21st century there was nopresence of Naxals in Karnataka. it was you & your gang of self proclaimed socialist intellectuals who brught them to Karnataka.
Eminent writer of ‘Bettale Jagattu’ fame Pratap sinha exposed your dual nature and very recently it was Dr. S.L Bhairappa who again exposed how cheap you are.

you have been making lots of effort to get nominated to Rajya sabha and that is the only reason you are behind a political party.

by the way how did you get Jnanapetha. I am just an ordinary reader and no book wriiten by you has any quality to be even nominatd for Jnanapeetha. Certainly you do not belong to the elite list of Literary greats of Karnataka such as KUVEMPU, Da Ra Bendre, Karantha, Gokak, DVG, Adiga, Bhairappa etc.

please for the sake of Kannadigas..stop canvassing behind political leaders because because you are a wasteful intelectual(?) to Karnataka
