The difference is divine between then and now

The former governor of West Bengal, Gopalakrishna Gandhi, at a lecture on governance in India, quoted in The Telegraph:

Touring the Kannada countryside in 1927, Mahatma Gandhi asked a poor villager: ‘Who rules Mysore?’ The answer was, ‘Some god.’

If an average Indian were asked today, ‘Who rules India?’ — the answer is likely to be, ‘God knows.’

That two-word answer says more than any lecture can. The aam admi is perplexed — by the condition of his surroundings. And by his own condition.

    Good one !!

Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV also got the title of “Raja Rishi” , the Saintly King from the Mahatma !!

and Rabindranath Tagore said during his visit “When the other Maharaja’s of India were after wine, women, wealth and busy running to Europe at a drop of a hat, Here was a King who cared for his subjects !!”

Pathetic. That ‘poor villager/average indian/aam aadmi’ deserves his fate …

I think it is very hard to believe that gods ruled Indians (or Kannadigas) back then!!! If Indian kings were so great, I don’t think we would have been ruled either by the british or by the mughals. However, I think Indian kings were strong enough to make sure that the civilization sustained despite the difficulties. Perhaps the current politicians best represent the past kings, since typically they are from princely families or have politica; dynasties. And as karihaida put it, Indians do deserve the fate they are in!!!
