9 dreams & a wish for the year of the lord, 2011

By T.J.S. GEORGE

Even from the depths of gloom, human nature longs for happiness.

At the dawn of a new year the longing surfaces with vigorous anticipation. This time the anticipation has a desperate edge to it because, during the year that has just gone, our trust in many of our institutions and individuals was shattered.

We badly need to restore that trust; without trust in the basic structure of society and the custodians of that structure, survival itself would be under threat.

So how do we get back our faith in the system?

What the citizen can do by way of action is limited. But we can dream.

Dreaming is a way to reshape reality closer to our heart’s desire. A means to harmless pleasure. It’s one freedom we enjoy unfettered, one human right no politician or policeman can take away from us.

Let’s dream:

# 1. That Manmohan Singh will abandon his silences and act and speak up like a Prime Minister. He has it in him as he showed while pushing the civil nuclear bill with an iron will. If we dream hard enough, maybe he will show more of that iron.

# 2. That India will stop kow-towing to America. The Reserve Bank’s decision to stop a 35-year-old arrangement for the purchase of Iranian oil is not only a surrender to American pressure and therefore a disgrace; it is also potentially dangerous because the sudden stoppage of $11 billion worth of oil imports can lead to catastrophic price spiralling across the board. And what do we get in return from America? Stupid body searches of even our senior diplomats at US airports – which of course we take obediently lying down.

# 3. That Sonia Gandhi will give up being the deity of the Congress and its government. Such is her unstated mightiness that when the Congress takes a stubbon stand perceived as wrong, her hand is suspected. From Bofors to the present PAC stalemate, the stubbornness has been so hard-core, unbending, relentless that an explanation-seeking public could only suspect her hand. That kind of omnipotence does her no good. It does the country no good.

# 4. That the unseen coteries in Delhi enjoying power without responsibility will either stop wielding power or come out into the open and be accountable. The coteries comprise the likes of Ahmad Patel, T.K.A. Nair of the PMO, Christie Fernandes of Rashtrapathi Bhavan and Vincent George of 10 Janpath.

# 5. That India will start punishing the corrupt. Not necessarily like the Chinese who shoot top people like mayors and CEOs found to be corrupt, but at least like the US where CEOs caught in fraud get quick trials followed by jail sentences.

# 6. That agencies like the CBI and police will get the autonomy without which they become a menace instead of the cleanser they are supposed to be. Political shackling of such institutions is at the core of India becoming a corrupt and corrupting democracy.

# 7. That the two remaining pillars of our democracy, the judiciary and the media, will realise that they will cease having any meaning if they cease having any credibility.

# 8. That all those in positions of influence, from ministers to journalists, will pay heed to a phrase Sonia Gandhi used: “Our shrinking moral universe”. It is their action/inaction that caused the shrinking. So – stop preaching, start doing something.

# 9. That our political parties will at least camouflage their hypocrisies instead of making them so blatant as to insult the intelligence of voters. BJP chief Nitin Gadkari proclaimed before camera that B.S. Yediyurappa was okay because his actions were “only immoral, not illegal”. From a party that pretends to be moral to the core, what unashamed duplicity!

With all those dreams lighting up our horizons, let us also have one solitary wish as well:  That the Good Lord have mercy upon us for we are unlikely to get it from any other source.

” 35-year-old arrangement for the purchase of Iranian oil”

and what do we get in return?

    http://www.asianews.it/news-en/Ayatollah-Khamenei-calls-for-support-for-the-Muslims-of-Kashmir-20046.html

And how does TJS George know that Reserve Bank’s decision is not a reaction to Ayatollah’s remarks but because of American pressure? Did Obama or MMS call him and told him about it? I can also claim that Iranians influenced TJS to write this article.

  2. Sanjeeva Says:

All the dreams will be realized in utopian state. Nothing has happened in the last 63 years and nothing will happen in the next 37 years.

  3. Anonymous Guy Says:

Added to what Pagain said on Point 2. the insinuation about
body searches is BS. I have seen how our ‘senior officials’ cavort
past the queues without any checks in our ‘democratic’ airports.
These buggers complain and cry when a normal check is done in a US
airport. And yet all of them want trips and placements in the US
and Western Europe. What do they expect – that they hop and skip
past normal citizens like they do in India? What is this deal with
being anti-US for the sake of being anti-US? Gives us some real
analysis based on facts. The good Lord wont do anything, if you
want something you need to make it happen. It seems the youth of
the nation have a better attitude than burnt out journalists in
    these matters.

  4. Goldstar Says:

Pagan, Well said. It is not in India’s interest to have a
nuke-capable Iran. Period. The sooner we realise that it won’t take
a blink of an eye for despots like Ahmedijinad to change targets
from Israel to India (as the news article shows “support” for
Indian Muslims in Kashmir), the better it is for us.

  5. ar india Says:

It seems the only right way out is through Left.
They are the only non corrupt party around.
I think the whole world which criticise the Communism should read the greatest work on economics and socio political science -‘Marx’s Capital’ and start understand the maas hysteria caused by the Americans which hides away these great work and truth from the world.
They portray stalinism and dictatorship as true communism while its not.
They say socialism is never sucessful, but we as of now doubts the effectiveness of our Democracy.Even it seems not working.
What we need is a Socialistic Democratic set-up.

So all those Indians who still can think intelligently instead of being over emotional read these great left thoughts and works.Understand the real truth rather than what is spread around popular media contolled by Congrress and BJP thru MsRadiaji and comprsing VirSanghvis and Burkha Dutts.
Its high time we wake up,shook of our selfishness and work together towards a better India.
Pls ask the question on whether you need a Prime Minister who takes iron stance for a Nuclear Deal to happen for the interest of America and who keeps his mouth shut during all corruption happening under his ministry and after long silence opens his bad mouth just to support the Corporates. To whom is this guy responsible? Its seems he care nothing for the people of India and care only abt Tatas and Ambanis who build skyscrapers out of the sweat of the poor Indians.
So in next elections all over India pls fellow Indians make a stance.
We dont want rulers ,we need great leaders.
We dont need in Indian, the American National Congress headed by an Italian or the Fascist BJP who will shake the roots of our secularistic democracy and are corrupt to the core.
The biggest vote of these parties and allies come from the Indifference of the so called educated Middle Class who stays away from politics.
So go secular, vote intelligently.Make and effort to look towards left.Lets make a better India,Lets chuck out these corrupt from ruling our nation.

  6. Vinay Says:

    ar India:

I thought your tribe of quasi-socialist regressive fossils had died out earlier this decade?! There still seem to be a few of you around though. Have your policies not looted the country enough in the decades following independence? Don’t you have an iota of shame, that you are proposing more of the same?

  7. DailyBread Says:

    >So go secular, vote intelligently.Make and effort to look towards left.Lets make a better India,Lets chuck out these corrupt from ruling our nation.

2g, cwg, loot happened when Left was fully on board. Infact UPA2 looks like a very honest dispensation; all those maha corrupts like Shivaraj Patil, Bhardwaj, Arjun Singh, Renuka Chowdhary, Antulay, Baalu, Laalu, Shibu Soren, RamVilas Paswan, etc. are not there is this cabinet.

  8. twistleton Says:

Leaving aside all the rhetoric, i agree with ar india. The
left is the only evil that is as of yet untried. Notwithstanding
WB. How to vote intelligently when there is no “none of the above”
    option?
