Should NRN open world Kannada conference?

The letters to the editor of Kannada Prabha carries this epistle from the Kannada writer, Baragur Ramachandrappa (translated):

“I am writing this letter against the backdrop of reports that Infosys chief mentor N.R. Narayana Murthy has been invited to inaugurate the Vishwa Kannada Sammelana (world Kannada conference), to be held in Belgaum from March 10 to 12, 2011.

“If there is any truth to these reports, my humble request is that the honour should instead go to Kannada cultural personalities or to VIPs like the President, prime minister or vice-president.

“I do not have anything personal against Narayana Murthy. He is a Kannadiga entrepreneur and we are justly proud of him. But that is exactly why we must be getting him to inaugurate the global investors’ meet, not the world Kannada conference.

“Outside of his entrepreneurship, what is his contribution to Kannada? Not even a Kannada font has come out of his multinational company. On top of it, he has been a vociferous champion of education in the English medium from the first standard itself. It is to be noted here that learning English and teaching in the English medium are two different things.

“It is also to be remembered that he had lobbied with the S.M. Krishna government to change the State education policy to open English medium schools to help children of his employees, and had even had a discussion with me when I was chairman of the Kannada development authority in this regard.

“Besides, the income-tax department has only just slapped Infosys with a demand for Rs 450 crore for wrongfully claiming tax exemption.

“Instead of Narayana Murthy, the invitation could have been extened to poet laureate G.S. Shivarudrappa, Jnanpith Award winners U.R. Anantha Murthy or Girish Karnad, veterans like Patil Puttappa, D. Javare Gowda or M. Chidananda Murthy, renowned poets like Chandrasekhar Kambar, Chennaveera Kanavi or Nissar Ahmed, etc.

“Or we could have called upon a folklore artiste.

“On the other hand, by calling upon somebody who is just a entrepreneur to inaugurate the Vishwa Kannada Sammelana is an insult to Kannada culture, literature and folklore. If the invitation cannot be revoked at this juncture, it is best Narayana Murthy is invited as a ‘guest’ to the inauguration.”

  1. raj Says:

I have never seen this guy speaking in kannada.., most of the time when he comes on TV ( even in kannada channels) i see him talking in english.

May be SUDHA MURTHY would be an ideal choice, as she has written books in kannada also i guess.

  2. micro Says:

I think NRN is good choice. Next step for kannada is in the electronic world.

  3. Yella Ok Says:

He should. Why not? I think it is time the proverbial East and West meet (even though the proverb says they cannot) – “ITBT people” and the saahitis. It is time they exchange views at a platform.

But my fear is that such vociferous outbursts would get NRN to decline even if the organisers dont take back the invitation.

And what stupid views – “just an entrereneur” and “income tax case”. An entrepreneur is not “just” an entrepreneur and the IT (income tax dept) is just wishing and hoping with the case – nothing illegal as of now. If it wins the case, then all IT companies will be slapped with similar case.

  4. whynot Says:

Baraguru has included URA but excluded SLBhyrappa. These writers are politicians with pen, better to call NRN :)

  5. Deepak Says:

Two sides to this : One is that NRN is someone whom we should be proud of; so what if he is an entrepreneur – he is the man initiated the IT revolution which has changed the face of Bangalore and Karnataka.

But at the same time, Baragur has a point when he says NRN should be a guest and not the person opening the event. NRN has done a lot for the state, but he cannot be called an exceptional Kannadiga. Better that Rashtrakavi GSS inaugurates the event with NRN as guest of honour – that will be a non-controversial choice.

  6. Pagan Says:

Question to Baraguru: Is Kannada only about poets and sahitis?

  7. Pagan Says:

As soon as I read the news that NRN was invited, I knew some “buddijeevi” would object and Churumuri would promptly publish :)
The organizers should drop NRN and invite Azim Premji. You know, just to trick the “buddijeevis”

  8. Not Simple Says:

UNESCO recommendations are very clear about mother tongue education. We should implement it atleast at the primary school level. Totally agree with Baragur Ramachandrappa. NRN has been at the forefront of “wipe out Indian languages” campaign.

  9. wanderlust Says:

well yes, infy has not given anything to the kannada world. that cannot be denied. so many techies and yet someone else had to come up with Baraha kannada fonts.
for that matter, he’s not really contributed to computer science either. in fact he’s hurt the indian computer science scene, taking in so many bright engineers and giving them nothing but mind-numbing services jobs. no innovation, nothing.
if anything, he’s just a successful businessman. ashte.
hangandre we can call so many more businesspeople who are more successful and who have done more for kannada, alva?
if anything, we should call this guy: http://www.hindu.com/mp/2004/06/09/stories/2004060901060100.htm

  10. Pulikeshi the Last Says:

Pagan has raised a most relevant question. After all, we had a Kannada Sahithya Sammelana a few weeks ago. This is Vishwa Kannada Sammelana, relating to all aspects of Kannada and the lives of Kannadigas.

Our story tellers, poets, and their critics have long been using culture as capital, telling us poor folks that if we read the literature and watch the movies in our language, miraculously the language will be able to withstand all the onslaughts on it. Nothing can be further from the truth. As long as Kannada has a use for us, we will speak it without ever reading a poem by Bendre or Siddhalingayya. For it to be indispensable, we should be able to say that we can make a living using it in the workplace, as it is indeed done in our rural areas without shedding any tears for it is supposedly impending demise.

We must see the nauseating politics as well. Whoever NRN is, he is a Kannadiga. Advocating an education in English is no crime when our history has made English indispensable and available to us. A Kannadiga who has a decent life because he knows English is better off than one who knows no English and talks about Kannada being an orphan in its own land. Holding the Sammelana Belagavi–Belgaum, we could not prevail upon New Delhi to let us rename it despite having four of our politicians as ministers in New Delhi–is a pointed invitation to the Marathi population of the city to cause trouble. This on top of every bit of preparation looking like a haphazard afterthought. We used to bemoan the state of our miserable native tongue for a month in November and forget about it. Now we do it in March again, spending crores on this foolishness.

We need a new way of thinking about Kannada. If D-grade jobs are all that literate Kannadigas can aspire to, under the KRV’s umbrella, we are doomed indeed.

  11. twistleton Says:

NRN would be the most recognizable face. That is why he is chosen. Contribution be damned :).

How many people today given the task of inaugarating a function/gathering actually have anything to do with the subject of the meet? A celebrity is the be all and end all of inaugural launchpads. NRN is a celebrity. Period.

Actually a more powerful statement about culture can be made by getting an “outsider” to intiate proceedings. The message that goes out is: Everyone’s welcome.

  12. Sanjeeva Says:

    One should agree to Baragur.

  13. sahana Says:

Why Infosys fails to attempt to develop unicode for kannada ?

  14. Angry Young Man Says:

I too am not sure about the appropriateness of inviting Narayana Murthy to inagurate the Kannada Sammelana. But I don’t think it is a bad move either. It would be interesting to hear what Sri. Murthy has to say about working for the upliftment of Kannada culture in our state. Let’s wait and see. We might get to see a pro-Kannada side of this personality.

  15. Niaz Ahmed Says:

Funds for the samhelana come from big corporates like Infy. Our sahitiis with all due respects cannot make any monetary contribution.

  16. Indu Ramesh Says:

I read somewhere that Aishvarya Rai Bachchan will also be invited. Now, what has she done to Kannada or even her mothertongue Tulu?
I wish they dont make the vishva kannada meet another art, culture and literature meet. Let the NRIs who attend be made to know about what they can do to the state, not just the language. Talking about language, would churumuri start a pagein kannada? I would love it.

  17. Vinay Says:

Agree 100% with Pagan and PTL. These ‘intellectuals’ and ‘Buddhijeevis’ talk as though literature and poems are the bedrock of Kannada, and that the only people suited to represent the language are poets or literary ‘intellectuals’. No one needs to read poetry or listen to ‘intellectual’ speeches to “save Kannada”.

An auto driver from Hassan, a farmer from Mandya, and yes – even a ‘Saaaftware person’ from Bangalore who speaks Kannada in his interactions outside office – such people are the ones who are really “upholding Kannada”.

  18. Santhosh G A Says:

He is not the ideal choice for inauguration……………….

  19. twistleton Says:

    @Indu

I hope and pray that Aishwarya continues not to do anything to Kannada. Poor Kannada. What did it ever do to her? :D

  20. NS Rao Says:

I would love to see Sri NRN talk in Kannada – and his proficiency in it – after all, he is a socialist turned Capitalist and a “supposedly” Kannadiga who speaks “only” eloquent English in all his interviews.

  21. Karavali Says:

Baragur has a point. If it were to be a Vishwa Kannadigara Sammelana, NRN would have been a good choice as he would be for Global Investors Meet too. But this is Vishwa Kannada Sammelana. No, I am not splitting hairs here.

  22. sunil Says:

hope he doesn’t make his inaugural speech in ENGLISH….

  23. Rao Says:

Considering the fact that the current, corruption obsessed BJP Govt led by Yeddi, has a singular objective of financial gain to a gang of individuals, in every decision and exercise or event, I strong recommend that the Vishwa Kannada Sammelana be inaugurated by either Rajeev Chandrasekhar or Hema Malini.

Both of them are the new found, shamelessly commercial imports to Kannada and can do a wonderful job of delivering the inaugural speech in Malayalam or Tamil, viz., their own mother tongues.

  24. Ombudsman Says:

It seems like this blog is founded on “whipping NRN”; not Infosys.

A personal vendetta of some sorts …

  25. BS_Sunil Says:

And what medium did Bargur’s kids study in? I lived as his neighbor on Reservoir Street, Basavanagudi.

    Such hypocrites we have.

  26. pavitra Says:

Baraguru has/d no objection to Kannada activists burning offices; kannad activists painting someone’s face black; Renukacharya becoming a minister; siddaramaiah slapping the poor assembly marshals; bachchegowda showing his dishum-dishum skills in a road-rage incident; R. Ashoka landing late for a movie and forcing the movie to re-start and so on. All this according to him did no damage to the image of Kannada culture….not even a word from him; now the government has taken a good decision and he is making silly noise about it…one could also ask what is his own contribution to Kannada except writing in a style which no commonman would understand..he was the chairman of Kannada Development Authority during S M Krishna’s time and that’s why perhaps he is giving all the credit to the former chief minister for the IT boom in Karnataka….take up some real issues which will save Kannada mr ramachandrappa

  27. Girish Says:

Baraguru says NRN is just an enterpreneur.Do you what it takes to be an enterpreneur like NRN. He has given crores of money to engg colleges in mysore for the developement. He has initiated IT growth in karnataka bcos of which many middle class people got hte hope that if they can study well they can also reach dreams…Why so called “buddijivis” always find fault in society… what buddijivis like anantha murthy and you have doen to society….you have also done many political gimmics to achieve whatever you have achieved…first accept that…

  28. shesha Says:

    Invite Muthappa Rai!

  29. badkobeku Says:

I think the buddujeevis are going too far.. They would have raised questions if Bendre was invited as that would be a Marathi and we have border problems with Maharashtra.. Ditto with DVG and Kailasam as they were Tamils; Gokak because he studied in Pune and worked in Sangli; Masti was an Iyengar and hence not ‘pure’ kannadiga’.Even kittel would have got the boot!
In fact Kannada is one of the few languages outsiders have fallen in love with and contributed handsomely. Let’s not do this ‘frog in well’ dance over and over. NRN, Aishwarya anybody should be welcome.BTW why do the buddujeevis think only a litterateur should open the Meet? Why not thimmakka who contributed enormously by doing something for environment rather than yap all the time? Are we capable of thinking beyond our borders when we are talking of ‘World Kannada Conference?’!

  30. Complex Says:

  31. nalini Says:

I heard that more malayalam movies are screened in Infosys campus, Mysore than Kannada. (malayalis are majority there) What a pity. They need land in Mysore, but not kannada. I have never never heard NRN speaking in Kannada so far. Pooja Gandhi is better. She has sincerely tried and learnt Kannada and speaks Kannada in interviews.

  32. AC Says:

It is Vishwa Kannada Sammelana. Not Vishwa Kannada Sahithya Sammelana. Kannada is not the sole property or responsibility of writers alone.

Anybody can inaugurate it. NRN Murthy can also do the honours.

This Baragur once lobbied to inaugurate Mysore Dasara. But, refused to take part in the pooja.
A bogus writer, who talks only nonsense.

  33. DailyBread Says:

Bargur will fall in line once he gets a call from Delhi. If this guy tries to punch above his weight, Nandan will make sure that the fellow will not get his UID.

NRN should open the sammelana, Aishwarya Rai should attend with her entire family Jaya, Sr & Jr. Bachan. This will ensure that half the world will come to know that there is some language called Kannada and there are billionaires & miss worlds who still speak this language.

  34. Gaby Says:

Yeah why not Umashree or Tara or even Pooja Gandhi?

  35. harkol Says:

Baraguru asks, what has NRN done for Kannada to open a Kannada sammelana. Fair question.

But, can we also spare a thought as to what “Kannada Sammelana” has done for Kannada or Kannadigas? What meaningful purpose do these seminars serve other than as a networking events?

  36. Dr Y N I Anand Says:

Badkobeku has written many factual inaccuracies. For eg,

D R Bendre was born on into a Chitpavan brahmin family at Dharwad in Karnataka. His Grand father was a Dasagranthi (Master of ten volumes of sacred lore) and scholar in Sanskrit classical literature. Dattatreya’s father was also a Sanskrit scholar who died when Dattatreya was only 12 years old. Dattatreya later adopted the pen-name of Ambikatanayadatta which literally means Datta, son of Ambika after his mother who ran a Khanavali or eatery to feed the family. Bendre completed his primary and high school education in Dharwad with his uncle’s help and completed his matriculation in 1913. He joined the Fergusson College, Pune for his higher education. After obtaining his degree Bendre returned to Dharwad and started teaching at Victoria high school. Starting his career as a teacher at Victoria high school in Dharwad, he worked as a professor of Kannada in D.A.V. College Solapur between 1944 and 1956.

DVG was born in the year 1887 in Mulabagilu taluk of Kolar district in the Indian state of Karnataka. DVG completed his primary school education in Kannada in the year 1898. He also attained basic education in English apart from learning Sanskrit on own interest. Later he continued his education in Mysore from the Maharaja high school. Even though DVG did not pass matriculation exam (10th Standard), he had discontinued formal education after matriculation, his essays were selected as chapters for Graduation text books and PhD thesis.

    Again, about TP Kailasam,

Kailasam was born in a Tamil family in Southern Karnataka, India, and educated in England. On his return to Karnataka he worked to improve the literary scene there. His life was dedicated to local theater and his contributions revolutionised it. His application of humor to his plays left an everlasting impression on Kannadigas. He opposed the company theatre’s obsession with mythology and stories of royalty and shied away from overloading his plays with music. Instead, he introduced simple, realistic sets. Kailasam chaired the Kannada Sahitya Sammelana held at Chennai, then called Madras, in 1945.

    Finally about Maasti,

Masti was born in 1891, at Hongenahalli in Kolar district of Karnataka in a Tamil speaking Sri Vaishnavaite family. He spent his early childhood in Masti village. Due to poverty, he moved from place to place until he obtained a master’s degree in English literature (Arts) in 1914 from Madras University. After joining the Indian Civil Service (Known as the Mysore Civil Service in the days of the Maharaja of Mysore), he held various positions of responsibility in different parts of Karnataka, rising to the rank of District Commissioner. He retired in 1943. A prolific writer, he wrote more than 120 books in Kannada and 17 in English, for over seventy years. He won the Jnanpith Award in 1983 for his novel Chikkavira Rajendra.

Let everyone in this forum know that all these are KANNADIGAS and not go away with wrong information.

  37. twistleton Says:

    Green eyed monster Baragur… :D

  38. Doddi Buddi Says:

    Dr YNIA,

You don’t get the irony in Badkobeku’s post, do you? :))

  39. Upma Says:

I guess I will leave it to the more enlightened Kannadigas here (I am not) to deliberate on who should and who should not. But reading the report in

    http://www.bangaloremirror.com/article/10/201103032011030303075264735ef6ef9/Artistes-oppose-readers-support-Narayana-Murthy.html

makes me wonder why the report is too keen to conclude that readers are in support of Murthy, is it a case of “manufacturing consent” ?

The counter arguments goes that journalists are also people, and not everyone of those is aiming for the Ramnath Goenka award for Journalism of Courage ! (Even if they do, they have to remember that the panel of 11 jury members this year included Narayana Murthy himself. There is no running away from the omni-present and the all powerful, is there ?)

  40. Sanjeeva Says:

Badkobeku – Could you kindly describe a “pure kannadiga”?! If you consider DVG, Bendre, Kailasam, Masti and others as non-Kannadigas, nijavaglu nimma buddhige badkobeku.

  41. twistleton Says:

    @Dr YNIA

You just proved badkobeku’s point. :)

  42. Dr. Ishwar shastri motinsar Says:

  46. DR Prakash B S Says:

As it is viswa kannada sammelana, he is not the one to inaugurate, there are many person with qualities for it. just because he is international personality should he be called, just he gave employment does mean, just his company is made name international level, hence karanataka, is he not snatcching oppurtunity from other sahitis, will he or governement invite sahitis for IT inauguration, global investor meet you ask what reason would they give, they what a sahiti would do here he becomes a outdated perosn ther, but company owner can do anything. Now the government says it is the celebration of karnataka achievement so they invite him. then what for are they conducting Kannada Sammelana, they could have looked for world famous personlaity.

    Dr Prakash

  47. harkol Says:

    @mah

I wonder who insulted whom! A court decided there was no insult. Playing national anthem instead of singing is so common. I see that in multiplexes in Bangalore, where they play – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_RGzJzhLnE&playnext=1&list=PL6C0AD3A8654D7A8D

People routinely get up, but none sing.

People who want to throw muck at great folks, find some excuse or other.

  48. balachandra Says:

    Read following and decide yourself

Some one who did not allow his company sing National song, because people from other nations would feel bad

one who created economic upheaval by mindless salary to tom dick and harry,

one who committed fraud on entire people of kannada by getting land free /at concessional nominal rate-

one who criticized Deve gowda because he refused to give land-

one Who praised Kumar swamy upon becoming Chief Minister because Kumar swamy agreed to give land

these are his balance sheet let people decide

  49. Dr. Sree Reddy Says:

I fully agree with author’s viewpoint. Murthy may be right to open a global investors meet etc etc not kannada sammelana.

Somebody who has made contributions to the development of Kannada should be invited to inaguarate the sammelana.
Why not a ordinary kannada school teacher instead of all these luminaries?
Kannada school teacher who has spent her/his life teaching kids in Kannada. One way of appreciating their work.

  50. Doddi Buddi Says:

I hope NRN will henceforth remember his Kannada roots and will start working for Kannadigas. Getting a lot of land under Somnalli Kitta helped to kick start Infy and to this alone NRN owes a huge debt of gratitude to Karnataka. What is with the Malayali domination in Mysore Infy? Can we see more posts on this please?

Why no one is asking for the living god, the one and only living ex-PM Kannadiga Devegowda to preside over at the World Kannada Conference? Just wondering…

  51. Pulilkeshi the Last Says:

    DB–

Perhaps the only Kannada thing Devegowda can remember is “Naagara haave, haavoLu hoove.” Furthermore you never know when his blood sugar reaches exponential heights and have him start cursing namma Lingavantha CM.

Surprisinghly enough, the man is down to chair one of the sessions. I wish I was generous enough to make a note. Let us ask the idolater Manjunath.

  52. Daz Says:

NRN to open “Vishwa kannada sammelana” looks like a big joke to me. He never deserved to be part of any Kannada related functions. It’s not just INFY which put Bengaluru in lime-light. Keonics & Electronic city was popular even before INFY started.
Reasons to decline NRN opening Vishwa Kannada Sammelana..
What is the count of Kannadaiga’s in INFY and PROGEON?
Has he any respect for our National Anthem? The one who has no respect to our National Anthem has respect for Naada Geethe? Does he even know the Naada Geethe?
This man passes comments on Kaveri protesters for the public loss but has no words for the life taken in the building mishap at Infy campus?!!
He wanted Central Govt to rule Bengaluru when Karnataka Govt provided all the basic land & infrastructure for INFY…
Finally… do his kids know Kannada?

    sick …. !!!!
Mr. NRN, if you are reading this comment or watching any debates on ur topic in the media… Atleast realize now that karnataka people appreciate you so much which you don’t deserve. Don’t forget you are one amongst kannadiga. It’s your time to do something for your mother land.

  53. DailyBread Says:

    >It’s your time to do something for your mother land.

Charity begins at home. Please start a company, create employment for 100 people, pay them a decent salary every month, create some wealth, share that wealth with your employees…..

Hope this happens and Infosys will have its own city….

  54. Daz Says:

    @ harkol
    >Playing national anthem instead of singing is so common.
Hope you should have some sense to know the fact before typing some crap…
Fact was, NRN dint want his business delegates to be emabarassed as they dont understand the National Anthem lyrics. So wanted musical version to be played.
Such comments are SICK and he deserves a KICK from every Indian.

  55. Alok Says:

Ah nice to see churumuri is still a snakepit of half learned languages, blind hatred and bigotry.

    Good times

  56. Prakash Says:

Does Bargur believe that only literature and theatre spreads a language and makes it popular?
How many people who use English and Hindi in their daily lives have read Shakespeare or Hindi literature?

The fact is that a language grows because of common people using it in daily life and not buddijeevis who write in “pure” Kannada which commoners cannot understand.

And any living language does get influenced by other languages. English has grown and become popular not because the English insisted that everyone speak “pure” English. No, it is because English has assimilated words from all languages it comes in contact with.

Kannada fanatics think that the only way to improve Kannada is by imposing heavy taxes on non-Kannada movies ( they cannot compete otherwise), defacing English boards and waving flags.

  57. mallasarja dore Says:

vks annu nodi, nalidu, kannada naadinalli hutti bandaddu janmaswarthakavayitu
