Should Bollywood have a place in Mysore Dasara?

ROHITH BATNI writes: Come 2012, for some, “Mysore Dasara” could mean a train between Mysore and Dasara. Yes, that’s how far the Mysore Dasara celebrations have been steered away from the host-City.

Here’s a brief recollection by a Mysorean of how the ‘raayara kudure‘ has been progressively becoming a ‘raayara katthe‘.

Mysore Dasara 2008: Organizers launch the fest’s official website in tens of languages, barring Kannada. Guess why. They presumed Kannadigas wouldn’t refer the site. What they failed to understand was that using Kannada on that site actually represented Kannadigas and the people that’ve been historically celebrating Mysore Dasara.

Feedback was provided, interested people worked with these organizers to inform the importance of having Kannada as the binding spirit behind Mysore Dasara celebrations – both online and on the field.

Mysore Dasara 2009: The refurbished official website now featured the Kannada version; pages displaying most information in Kannada. Meanwhile, a new event called Yuva Dasara started playing mostly Hindi music.

Feedback was provided again by interested citizens of Karnataka to stop playing Hindi in a Dasara function as it is just plain incongruent to do so. It’s like playing Michael Jackson during a temple prayer offering. MJ’s music is not bad but is plain incongruent in a temple prayer scene.

Mysore Dasara 2010: The official page of Dasara now features English and Kannada only, a pretty good move keeping in mind the impossibility of maintaining the website in ten+ languages, most of them international.

But the Yuva Dasara event continues to play Hindi music, drawing widespread flak from Mysore Dasara tourists. The event just entered the hall of infamy of cultural programs held in Karnataka, yet endorsing week long irrelevant, non-Kannada (mostly Hindi) entertainment content.

All public feedback seemed to be falling on deaf ears, and departments of the populist state government seem to deriving calculated benefits out of these broad daylight murders of Mysore culture.

Mysore Dasara 2011: Opened the gates to a totally new version of Mysore Dasara – in fact a morphed version fielding Mizorami, Oriya, Bengali, Gujarati, you-name-it, dance artists and chefs alike.

Tourists landing in Mysore to witness the unique Mysore Dasara and its heritage are now challenged to treasure hunt for the original Mysore (and Karnataka) culture and tradition.

This time it is the Mysore-less Dasara Food Festival, the Mysore-less Yuva Dasara, and so on.

Anyone taking a guess what Mysore Dasara would be about in 2012? May be a good suggestion to name a train between Mysore and Dasara for that’s how far the two have been rendered.

Did we hear someone say – “in 2012 I am expecting the Polar Bears and Icy-cool Penguins to walk the Vijayadashami Jambu Savaari? Oh my! Aren’t those penguins popular among people, so what if they donn’t fit well in a Dasara procession?

  1. A Journalist Says:

I agree. People from different parts of India need not come to Mysore to watch cultural programmes in Hindi and other languages.

  2. Murthy Says:

Hmm…Why not? We can also get some Brazilians as well for performing Samba…They are much more popular than these guys…

  3. Harsha Says:

oh.. how can you write like this..
    afterall,
    hindi is our national language,
we eat more north indian dishes than idly sambhar,
we lack identity and culture ; we always look up to rajasthan, punjab, orissa, mizorm etc for uniqueness..
afterall, we all belong to land of Karnataka where we shy away from Kannada at any given moment!!

  4. Nija Says:

No Way! Bollywood has its place in the hindi belt. Mysore Dasara has its own cherished value since centuries. Why is it being corrupted with content that doesn’t go well with it. Even a kindergarten kid would stand up against this pollution going on in Mysore!!

  5. Angry Young Man Says:

Sorry, but no Hindi please. We don’t need to explain to anyone why we don’t need it. Think of us as fanatics, narrow minded, parochial etc., but WE DON’T NEED HINDI at the Dasara celebrations. WE DON’T NEED HINDI in Mysore. Ever.

Northies and Hindiwallas can rave and rant all they want but we will have none of their sneakiness or snobbery here. Kannadigas don’t need to explain to anybody – WE JUST WANT HINDI KICKED OUT OF MYSORE AND DASARA.

An occassional Mizorami or Tibetian troupe is most welcome, but linguistic groups like Tamilians and Hindi-speakers that have a tendency to impose themselves on other cultures should have no place at the Dasara.

…And we should broadcast this loud and clear to the entire country.

  6. Vivek Shankar Says:

I agree with Mr Rohith, Mysuru Dasara is about the culture and heritage of Karnataka. he’s correct. very well typified by the example of Michael Jackson. it’s totally inappropriate to be having non Kannada songs, non Kannada cultural activities here, it isnt the way.

  7. Ramesh Says:

Rightly said Rohit. It is really unfortunate that the committee does not think in these lines. There is a variety in food, culture, tradition, clothing etc in Karnataka itself which can be projected to the outside world.

  8. mrs anupamaa mangalvede Says:

it shouldnot be any where. every where ever u see they come and occupy the place. its a fault of our great indian people. we have so many artists in us but people never recognise and call bolly wood. i have this. their limit is up to playing role in cinemas only not on stages. its our place.

  9. Priyank Says:

If drawing huge crowd was the only criteria, Dasara would have attracted scores by organizing a Jennifer Lopez show (or Britney spears).
I believe, the organizers of Dasara are missing the point that it is the Naada-habba and not a privately organized rock show or Bollywood Buzznight.

  10. amaresh@gmail.com Says:

I totally agree with this. Yuva dasara has no place for performers. It has become a pure bollywood tamashe now. The great sanskruti rakshakaraada BJP yavaru ee reeti bollywood haadu haadisi, kunisi kannadigara habbavaada dasarege merugu tandiddaare.. I think pushing hindi on kannadigas could be the real agenda behind this. I came to this conclusion seeing other festivals like Hampi Utsava, Gulbarga utsava, Bidar Utsava and every where bollywood crap is getting the highest priority than the local talent. Thu..:(

  11. ajay Says:

Yuva Dasara, instead of introducing outside people to Karnataka music & culture, it is making our youths to go out of it.
It looked like a govt sponsered Bollywood event with item dances, nasty music.

Karnataka Govt should stop wasting people money for such kind of events.

  12. Dasara Fan Says:

This is utter nonsense.. you guys don’t want anything. If there is complete local programmes by giving importance only to Karnataka, then also you all will complain I tell u.

See we are a country of different religion, culture & tradition. We are not bringing any western singers shakira or akon or dance troupe by russia or china. Everyone here are from India.

And yes talking about Mysore History & culture what can u present for 9 long days limiting all the programmes to Karnataka tradition. Of course we should give importance to Karnataka and there are many programmes too on the same. Yuva Sambrama was a big example for the same. And Mysore Palace programmes, even there , many local legends performed. Ppl coming from South to mysore can enjoy the North India singers & the vice versa. Even taking note of local mysoreans when will they get chance to see all these biggies performing in Mysore. Ok Put more programmes giving importance to the tradition but don’t put an end to outsiders and they are really not outsiders. They are Indians too.

We are not the people who hate the Tradition or History we respect it , but the generation asks for a change and you have to accept that.

You cant take the present generation to 90s gain. We have the people who never forgets to visit temple in the morning & same never bunks the pubs in the evening. People accept both the skirts in the situation & sarees in the relevant time. So stop cribbing about Mysore & Dasara.

We dont have a proper administration to look after everything. We have to promote our festival worldwide. Not just sending buses to local villages and bringing the crowd. We also have to put the same plan to bring the tourists from different countries., Putting flex banners all over the city saying Mysore Dasara is utter rubbish. People who come to mysore they will be knowing abt dasara. Put the same hoardings in different cities & countries, Put at airports invite delegates from every country.

Talk about those promotional ideas not cribbing about the dasara programmes. You media guys should also think globally and bring such issues to the concern authorities.

    All equipped for a conversation

    - A true Mysore Fan!

  13. Aravind Says:

Hindi is not the national language of India. This simple general knowledge lacks totally with kannadigas. You just ask the same with a normal tamilian, immeditely he will say India doesnt have a national language.

Even if you notice, people use to cheer lot when a hindi song is sung and a relative dull response to a kannada song in Yuva Dasara. We kannadigas feel somewhat proud by learning and speaking hindi.

Karnataka, kannada and its culture is in a status of unfortunate only because of we kannadigas.

  14. akshayablogs Says:

Actually Bollywood should be kept miles away from karnataka… Once you let the ghost inside your house, it defies to go out. Practically speaking organisers should use their small brains atleast now because would any hindi speaking person visiting mysooru to c Mysooru dasara expect Bollywood or the speciality of the place? obviously speciality of the place. organisers have clay inside their heads.. :(

  15. Jayateerth Says:

There is absolutely no need of bollywood songs or non-kannada related in such festivals.Organizers should understand that Dasara Utsava is meant for showcasing True Maisuru culture & rich traditional values, not for cheap songs like Munni or sheila. It is also a good platform for young talented Kannada artists.Visitors are really interested in Karnataka Music,Folkfore dance like Yakshagana,Janapada geete,Dollu Kunitha.

  16. ajay Says:

@Mysore Fan, “Ok Put more programmes giving importance to the tradition but don’t put an end to outsiders ”

Correct, this is what the intension of the article. So, rest of your arguments go in vain…

  17. Purushotham Shetty Says:

Mr Dasra fan i don’t know how u feel like if other come to ur place and show off and impose things in ur house its the same way we feel……….
We don’t mysore to be another bangalore….and to tell about why we don’t want bollywood in dasara is as simple as u say chicken biryani and serve idly sambar…..

“Ppl coming from South to mysore can enjoy the North India singers & the vice versa” u said this ppl come here to see Mysore and karnataka not to see Tamil nadu or north India..

and u talk about outsiders come to bangalore and see how outsiders are here…….. i request outsiders please leave mysore alone………. when u come out to others place respect it don’t impose ur own things on localities

  18. Nija Says:

@Dasara Fan – one simple question to your all-Indian-encompassing theory around Dasara – it may be okay to conduct programmes like those you’ve creatively fantasized about, and I dont say that is a bad idea. If you have to play all those items, why call that event Mysore Dasara?

And you ask interesting questions.. “what can you present for 9 ‘long’ days limiting all programmes to Karnataka tradition?” Well to the best of my knowledge the duration of a day has remained 24hrs in the last few millennia and the number 9 has meant the same since it was invented. So has the value of 24×9 remained static.

If Mysore Dasara could be organized with display of rich Mysore kingdom heritage about 400 years ago, wonder what makes one feel it “long” if we were asked to portray the inherited Karnataka culture for the same 9 days!! Were there no yuva(karu) with cultural aspirations at that time, or have today’s socio-economic & socio-political conditions programmed our youth to the limit of confusing them about their own cultural aspirations?

“Dasara Fan” also talks about Indian-ness of the artists as sufficient qualification to feature in Dasara programs. This is definitely an inappropriate assumption because Dasara and its constituents have its origins far earlier to the formation of India, and its worldwide fame is because of this cultural uniqueness quotient. Not for its considerateness in presenting a chitra-anna of ‘Indian’ cultural melting pot.

  19. SY Says:

Rightly said Rohit! Certain things need to be done at certain places and this definitely is not the place for Bollywood or a Punjabi show.. Visitors come to Dasara to relive the grandeur and by doing these things a wrong message is being passed on to the visitors. A colleague of mine took his kids to Dasara and he says that the kids now thinks Hindi music was what Raja’s used to have during Dasara.. Is this the heritage we wish to pass on to the coming generations?

  20. Kiran Manjunath Says:

For those who claim hindi as our national language..pls check the facts..there is no reference to any national language in indian constitution and hindi is just one of the official languages of the gov of india, like the other 14 recognized languages, and thats it. Hindi has no special status but central gov is forcing it on to the non-hindi speaking states.

  21. renukaprasad Says:

Down the line, I would like to see “metallica” perform as well!! Damn, they draw so much crowd, will be one hell of rocking dasara. After all, we all are humans why differentiate between Indians and westerners.. Everybody needs a chance to perform..
If suppose (I doubt) people get bored of metallica then maybe we can give chance to Hawaiian/Bali dancers. Good god !! we can have the Brazil Rio carnival as well, how on earth can anybody miss it. Dasara days will be written in gold if we get the Rio carnival during dasara. After all kannadigas need to pave way to promote others cultures rather than cribbing about the old age ceremonial Indian/bollywood/dasara programmes.

    - a true human (renuka prasad)

  22. Ravi Says:

@Dasara fan: “You cant take the present generation to 90s gain. ” Do you mean to say if doLLu Kunitha, Veera Gaase is performed it is like going back to 90s and if Bangda, faag dance is performed it is “hot and happening”? Strange that you call yourself ” Dasara fan”. It is utter waste of Kannadigas tax money to shell it on promoting dances and cuisines which are alien to Mysuru Dasara.

Dasara is repelling both the locals and the tourists alike. THere has been drastic dip in the visitors this time. Please have a look at this article
    http://www.dnaindia.com/bangalore/report_bangalore-youth-dussehra-slammed-as-rave-party_1594222

  23. Nagendra Rao Says:

Its shame on the apart of organizers they don’t have common sense that its Mysuru need to promoted and Karnataka heritage to be portrayed to the world.
It’s one example how Karnataka government and organizers think and act, least bothering about state and its people’s pride.
Here we need to consider our Kannada news media which has terribly failed in conveying message by reaching out to public and to rulers their act in this regard is thoughtless and stupid.
We see media picks up celebrity or silly things and discusses throughout the day, fails to address which need to be addressed.

  24. Deepak Rao Says:

Dasara Fan, Please read the post carefully. Under the banner of Mysore Dasara these programs are inappropriate totally. If you are unaware of the culture of Karnataka it’s better to keep quiet rather than announce to the world the ignorance one has. Mysore Dasara has been going since centuries and was celebrated even though days for the richness and culture it protrays to the outside world. that’s where the name it has made not by bringing in irrelevant stuff like it is now. because of the past name people are coming, if this stuff continues Mysuru Dasara will repel vistiors faster than anything.

  25. suresh Says:

some body refers Hindi as national language??? note its only official language not an national language and don’t pose the importance hindi importance over kannada , I think organizers believe introducing hindi will increase kannada heritage but its not like that it will kill. and regarding program why we need bollywood presense in Mysuru Dasara no body will get boored if all the programs were in kannada

  26. Babu Ajay Says:

Well articulated facts Rohith. Year by Year the organizers are moving more towards other cultures rather than promoting our own culture. People from around the world come feel the experience of Dasara which is supposed to portray our tradition, culture, language etc. But here is our govt. which uses the tax payer’s money to organise our “Naada Habba” and promote other languages and cultures. if the govt. is hell bent on promoting other languages and culture why do it in Dasara.First the organisers should know the essence of the festival before planning for the programmes to be organised during the festival.

  27. Mahesh M R Says:

    Well said Rohit,,
The ongoing event is mysuru dasara, which is being celebrated as the naada habba of Karnatraka and it has connection neither with Hindi nor with Bollywood. So its very much uncomfortable and agitable to have Bollywood entertainment in Mysuru dasara. So Bollywood should not have a place in Mysuru Dasara..!

  28. Umesh Says:

Dabba nan maklu.. Let them come. And speak kannada compulsorily on stage. Sing 3 kannada songs. Let them after having practiced..

But anyway, people from outside come all the way to see what mysore is all about, kannada culture that’s unique to our place etc..

But govt has done bringing Bollywood to entertain local crowd and to create some enthusiasm with m,ore and more activities… Any better way sir?

Mysuru is gain placed as ‘Mysore’. Govt is not bothered…

  29. the colonel Says:

    …………………..and ……..we……post…….in ……ingilis

  30. Amarnath Says:

Had the organizers knew the history of Dasara, I do not think the program would be such an apathy as what it is today..
This Yuva dasara is nothing but a Rave party as mentioned in one of the daily newspapers.
why should bangaala dances,Manipuri dances, Gujarathi thaali, Rajasthani Thali food festivals and many more be funded by the government of Karnataka?
karnataka government’s prime responsibility is to uphold the rich culture and tradition of Mysore which was prevalent for years.
Let the organizers and the government officials wake up and make Dasara a memorable one for all the tourists.
The author has written very aptly in this article – A north Indian wouldn’t come to namma mysooru to view North Indian dances or taste the North Indian food. They can feel and enjoy all that at their own backyard and need to travel down south to Mysooru for that.
This Yuva Dasara is also putting our folk dances and folk songs at stake. A foreigner would surely get mesmerized when he sees different folk dances originating in Karnataka like Dollu Kunita, Veera Gaase, Kamsaale, Karadi Majalu, Yakshagana and so on.
That depicts the rich culture of haLe mysooru and Karnataka on a whole..
We are not against organizing such bollywood nights or Odissi and Bangalaa dances but they should strictly be organized with a different label for the program. Its pathetic to see all these programs a part of our cultural rich dasara celebration.

  31. Satya Says:

Wonder whether those celebrating Dasara in North organise any programme in Kannada?

  32. Dasara Fan Says:

@All : I don understand.. Why just this “Yuva Dasara” is pricking everyone’s “heritage & cultural” sentiments. And for everyone’s information, hardly 10 percent of the yuva dasara crowd might be tourists and rest are all mysoreans.
In this 10 percent case we are nowhere sending a wrong message anywhere that Dasara is being spoiled.

  33. Nija Says:

Dasara Fan – your stats are wrong too. Besides a wrong message is a wrong message – be it given to a tourist or to a localite. What is important is what perceptions are created among people. If the message is wrong and misplaced it *needs* to be removed from such a big event. The Mysore Dasara is not such a small event where one can commit such blunders and dream of getting away with it.

  34. raghunandan Says:

Fully agreed with Rohith. We mysoreans don’t want our city to end up like bengaluru. Mizoramese or Oriya dance/song can be showcased once in a while but a BIG NO TO HINDI. Entertainment is the biggest leak-hole for language imposition. These should be nipped in the bud. And moreover. dasara is one opportunity to showcase kannada/kannada culture/mysore etc…It should tapped to the full.

  35. Amarnath Says:

For those who can read kannada:

The best Jamboo saavari i saw was in 80′s along with my grandpa.
Probably it was organised by experts with small budget.

somewhere in late 90′s politicians took keen interest in Dasara celebration. To some extent they did well.
As usual ruling parties change, leaders change & so do organising team change :)

This 9ratri has now got good budget, too many minds, lots of pressure to do something different & No vision obviously.

the outcome is today’s dusseraaa festival in its dilute form. [or you can also call cocktail / mocktail]

few years back i lost interest in Dasara procession after some observations.
the tabloids more represented some MP / MLA / section of population and less of culture, heritage & tradition.

I am happier to see old paintings and watch monochrome video of the festival.

Hope one day Namma Dasara gets “fixed committee” having experts & hard-core visionaries to flush out all impurities.

    -Jagadish

  38. Rama Says:

in fact why should we have floats from other districts for ‘Mysore Dasara’? no fun in seeing Chitradurga, Haveri and Bangalore rural Floats. instead it should be Kuvempunagar, Srirampura, Bamboo Bazaar floats…

  39. SURAJ SHUKLA Says:

yeh! even mysoorean has got ryt to enjoy b-town muzic & cult., so i’d
    say YES
