CHURUMURI POLL: Will Manmohan Singh survive?

In its second term in office, the UPA government of Manmohan Singh has been dealt several body blows that could have completely ennervated and incapacitated a lesser man. Scam after scam, scandal after scandal has hit the Congress-led UPA regime, but like in a C-grade Bollywood film, the protagonists have found the energy to wake up from every thundering blow administered by the courts and the constitutional bodies like the CAG, dust off the rubble and prepare to fight another day.

But could 2 February 2012 be slightly different?

In responding to pleas by Subramanian Swamy and Prashant Bhushan—cancelling 122 licences issued by the now disgraced telecom minister A. Raja; allowing the CVC to look at the functioning of the CBI and in giving a free hand to a lower trial court to adjudicate if home minister P. Chidambaram too should be made a party to the crime—the Supreme Court of India has virtually validated the Rs 173,000 crore 2G scam that had been described as a “zero-loss” scam by a fatcat lawyer in minister’s clothing.

And it indirectly validates the Anna Hazare campaign that has been floundering and looking for oxygen.

With the Uttar Pradesh elections around the corner, the SC verdict pulls the rug from under the feet of the Congress which has been going to town over Mayawati‘s corruption, even raiding her closest supporters. It also puts a big question mark over the future of the Manmohan Singh government, pending a judgment in the Chidambaram matter. With the budget session of Parliament looming and presidential elections around the corner, it also throws up interesting improbables.

Questions: Will the Manmohan Singh government survive? Or is it all over bar the counting? Or should the prime minister resign to protect what little credibility there is left to his once-clean image?

  1. Ramesh Raghuvanshi Says:

Manmohon Singh is appointed prime minister. He spend his all life as a civil servant,so Yes Sir tendency is wholeheartedly inserted in his psyche..He is puppet. Real power is with Sonia Gandhi she is conducting government by remote control. When President election due she will appoint to Manmohon there and Rahul become P.M.Up to that time Manmohon will survive

  2. Rastrakoota Says:

Whatever, this Subramanium Swamy is a Rockstar politician. Great job and keep going! All power to you Sir.

  3. harkol Says:

Question is not if MMS govt. will survive. It is – Should it?

MMS has lost all moral justification to continue after the biggest Auction of public property under his leadership is proven to be fraudulent and he let it happen, for purposes of expediency. He even defended Raja in parliament, after news of scam broke.

That he didn’t know what Raja was upto is a fig leaf. A judge in a court is no more equipped to know there is wrong doing than a powerful PM.

If you are a CEO, and endorse the your staff who are embezzling your company, then it doesn’t matter if you are honest.

    YOU GOT TO GO.

  4. asha Says:

More important than the government surviving will the numero uno family made culpable in the scam and brought to justice….MMS was never PM material. At best he was a decent bureaucrat who became a conniving and lousy FM and a pliable PM

  5. Jayashree Says:

This guy is a clean dirty fellow. His presence is of no relevance!

  6. Goldstar Says:

Ramesh Srivats (http://www.facebook.com/rameshsrivats), says “I’m sure someone in the Congress Party is currently toying with the idea of blaming Narasimha Rao for the 2G scam.”

  7. Brahmanyan Says:

He is appointed an PM by the UPA Chairperson. So long he is needed as the mask of UPA he will continue in the post. By himself he has no merit to be a leader to lead this great Nation. He is silent on many important issues facing the Nation, which has allowed the Country drifting aimlessly into scam after scam demolishing all the established institutions without a Captain.

  8. Gokulam 3rd Stage Says:

Of course he will. Staying and going is not up to him, and the people who call the shots usually don’t want to get off the gravy train.

  9. Satrang Says:

MMS has been a lame duck puppet from the beginning. He has shown absolute lack of control over the criminal ministers reporting to him, so much so that he should be considered complicit in all the crimes committed on his watch. He is a shame and disgrace to the nation. He should also be tried in court with Chiddu and the other scam tainted babus. He should be booked for gross negligence, mismanagement and causing harm to the nation.

  10. harkol Says:

Oflate I repeat “honest PM” many times to see if that phrase sounds correct!

Honesty is not only about not taking bribes. One can perhaps say he is a non-corrupt man, but even that doesn’t sound right.

If you follow a policy of See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil – even when you see dishonest folks working under you are stealing wealth belonging to exchequer, while you are entrusted by the public to guard it, you are DISHONEST. If you depend on corrupt practices to upkeep your govt. then you are corrupting the system.

Try saying “Our PM is a dishonest man”. It sounds just about right.

  11. Deepak Says:

What scam?!? There is no scam, SC has indicted NDA policy, so all NDA CMs should resign. Congress is the purest party in the world and MMS is the God of Purity. Please don’t give scope for nasty comments about party of purity!!!

  12. Emptymind Says:

Truth and his Dharma had been the role model for Gautama Buddha. Compassion and Forgiveness had been role model for Jesus Christ. Work and honesty has been role model for Basavanna. Non Violence was the role model f or Mahatma Gandhi and Mahaveera. Self respect was the role model for BR Ambedkar.
All crooked politicians , bureaucrats, business man, film stars, cricketers , conman, dons has been role models for todays people. Only God can save these ignorant fools.

  13. Objectivist Mantra Says:

    Who cares about Manmohan!

The important question is “Will the India Story survive?”

Churmuri has asked a completely futile question in this blog.

  14. Pulikeshi the Last Says:

With his big pension from the World Bank, Manmohan Singh has no pressing need to be corrupt. Fortunately for us, he does not seem to be interested in creating a political dynasty either.

As many, particularly Harkol, have said, Singh is rather incompetent and afraid of his own ministerial colleagues because they answer to the Doresani and not to him.

If he goes, he might give Rahul Gandhi a headstart.

  15. the colonel Says:

    dear OM,

the people of india are a very very burdened lot, BUT in spite of the babu’s and neta’s who have cocked up every so called situation , WE THE PEOPLE can hold our HEADS very very HIGH and very very PROUDLY.

not to worry we are not the OLDEST CIVILIZATION for nothing.

and CHURU has become QUITE SENILE

  16. harkol Says:

As faking news article says – “Kapil Sibal blames Britishers for loot, Congress just followed the policy” !!! – http://www.fakingnews.com/2012/02/kapil-sibal-blames-britishers-for-loot-congress-just-followed-the-policy/

  17. sanjeeva Says:

Nothing is going to happen. It is all time pass activities.
