CHURUMURI POLL: Is BJP guilty of ‘arrogance’?

07nda

Replying to the motion of thanks to the President’s address in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, prime minister Manmohan Singh was unusually belligerent, invoking memories of 22 July 2008, when he spoke in a similar vein after the UPA had won a controversial vote in favour of the civilian nuclear deal on which he had staked all.

Five years ago, he had said:

“The Leader of Opposition, L.K. Advani has chosen to use all manner of abusive objectives to describe my performance. He has described me as the weakest Prime Minister, a nikamma PM, and of having devalued the office of PM. To fulfill his ambitions, he has made at least three attempts to topple our government. But on each occasion his astrologers have misled him. This pattern, I am sure, will be repeated today. At his ripe old age, I do not expect Advani to change his thinking. But for his sake and India’s sake, I urge him at least to change his astrologers so that he gets more accurate predictions of things to come.”

Yesterday, days after Narendra Damodardas Modi said the PM was only a “nightwatchman“, the PM said:

“In 2009, they (the BJP) fielded their Iron Man Advaniji against the lamb that Manmohan Singh is and we all know what the result was. The BJP will lose again because of its arrogance…. I am convinced that if people look at our record, they would repeat what they did in 2004 and 2009.”

The PM’s “aggression” has caught many by surprise. Coming a day after Rahul Gandhi‘s admission that becoming prime minister was not his life-objective, there is even talk that this was as close as Manmohan Singh could come to bidding for candidacy for a third successive term as Prime Minister.

Questions: Is the prime minister’s charge of arrogance against the BJP valid? Or is he merely venting his frustration? Is it possible, just possible, that Manmohan Singh could be proved right again? Or is this just a pipe dream?

  1. Anitha Says:

Churumuri, you are at it again..!!!!

NDA was in power from 1999 – 2004. Before that it was the misrule of Congies and assorted other “Dal” parties. So NDA had to essentially undo the damage they did and then build the nation.

What UPA inherited in 2004 was robust economy, an economy which started to gain momentum after the hardwork of NDA government, an economy which also got pushed thanks to the boom in the world market.

Therefore, you have to compare the figures between 2009 and till date. When UPA had to show performance. When they had to start dig their own wells to get water, unlike they depended on the water they got from a well dug by NDA in 2004.

And the result has been pathetic.

When NDA was in power, people were looking at up India as one of the new world powers, this time even in Davos India was a fringe player.

When NDA was in power, the growth rate was +9%. MMS is tom tomming 7% as his achievement.

Poverty reduction is a total bunkum. The actual agricultural and industrial jobs have actually come down in the last ten years of misrule of UPA. I am not saying this. This is what NSSO reports said and I quote

“New employment data released by the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) shows that the UPA government generated only 2 million jobs between 2004 and 2009 annually. The employment numbers present a stark contrast to the Planning Commission’s target of 58 million jobs in the five years between 2007 and 2012. The new NSSO survey numbers have added on to the pile of problems and corruption charges that the UPA has been embroiled in during its second tenure. Many are now referring to this tenure as the phase of jobless growth. The figure, 2 million new jobs, looks worse when one looks at the number of new jobs the NDA government generated between 1999 and 2004 – 62 million.

And you are still talking about UPA performance???

The biggest scam people were talking about during the NDA regime was the coffin scam, which was not a scam at all. Later investigations have proved that in order to bring the body of the soldiers from siachen area the army needed aluminium coffins as against the wooden ones traditionally used. The alluminium ones were certainly more expensive. But they were needed.

Compare that with the scams this government has carried out. I dont need to mention that here.

You are talking about growth in foriegn exchange reserves. Like a true congress sycophant, you have released wrong data.

As of date, India’s external debt stands at a whopping figure of 320+ billion dollars as against an external debt of 120 Billion dollars in Dec 2004. The current account deficit is a cause of concern, RBI governor, day in and day out is cautioning Indian Govt against this. People have started hoarding gold because of galloping inflation.

And you are presenting half truths and lies to project this spineless and gutless government better than NDA????

    Brilliant.

  2. Communal Award Says:

Gujarat is developing due to Globalization i.e FDI/FII/QIP/NRI/PIO investments ($120 billion/yr).
Modi’s contribution is nothing but religious bigotry.

  3. asha Says:

So MMS finally spoke…that in itself is something to celebrate…this bench warmer night watchman looked meekly when all the scams were happening right under his benevolent gaze and now he is roaring like a lion to ensure a third term as PM. So there it is, not that he is stung by Namo’s jibe, but it is just to show he is still alive and open for a 3rd innings as PM

  4. Deepak Says:

It is the nightwatchman who is arrogant. If he thinks UPA won in 2009 because of him, no bigger fool than him. They won because of local satraps like Karuna, YSR, Pawar, Mamta and becase of anti-incumbency against BJP ruled Govt.

The entire statistics of Mannu is balderdash. To quote Siddhu, “he is clinging to statistics, like a drunkard is clinging to a lamp post”.

Check out this post which exposes Mannu’s statistical joke: http://www.firstpost.com/india/why-did-no-one-puncture-manmohans-claims-yesterday-651700.html

…and if Mannu thinks he will win inspite of the scams, then he is clearly becoming senile!!

  5. Prasanna Says:

  6. Sanjeeva Says:

Calling the PM as Nightwatchman might not be appropriate, but overall the BJP has not been rude or harsh in their criticism, whereas, the PM may be a gentleman, but if you see the body language, comments made and opinions expressed by many of the Congressmen, you will find that they are the real arrogant lot. The power has gone to the heads of quite a few people in Congress. In a TV debate, Mani Shankar Ayyar called Arvind Khejriwal ‘Kutta’ (Kutte bhaunkte rahte hain, caravan chalta rahata hai). Congress perceives that there is no alternative for them.

  7. RaShi Says:

ah…finally we needed Modi to break our PM’s silence. Where was he when his colleagues were busy creating scams after scams and looting thousands of crores… BTW, I can see media (electronic and print) already at work trying their best to avoid Modi from becoming PM. Good luck

  8. RC Sharma Says:

    @Communal Award
Yes, yes. And due to globalization India’s industrial output is declining.

And due to globalization, again, prices are rising on daily basis.

And due to globalization, again, one fourth of food grain purchased by FCI rots away.

And due to globalization, Gujarat has 24×7 electricity AND it is Delhi’s dream.

And due to globalization, Gujarat attracts lot of investment but WB draws nearly a NIL.

And due to globalization, Gujarat roads are world class, those of other states have classical pitfalls.

And due to globalization helps Gujarat, hence Modi’s input is ZERO. But that dratted globalization hampers many other states.

Global is curious animal, helps one but cripples another.

  9. harkol Says:

Arrogance = superior manner toward inferiors

Is BJP arrogant? Hopefully they are arrogant when they compare themselves with Congress. They have a better record of dealing with corruption & have better development agenda/focus.

But, In reality Congress is more arrogant – Having ruled India for almost 60yrs, it thinks every other party in India doesn’t have a right to rule (sort of natural party of power). BJP never tasted power that long to feel superior (powerwise).

  10. harkol Says:

It appears the Citadel of BJP in Karnataka has finally fallen. The urban body elections across Karnataka shows Congress is on a revival path in Karnataka and the biggest surprise for BJP would be – Mangalore!

Mangalore has been consistently voting for BJP for 30 years now. In fact, it was the only district to have strong showing by BJP way back in 1983 on wards.

But, BJP seems to have taken DK for granted, and thought it is only the ‘lingayat’ votes that counted.

Mangalore voter has told BJP to take a hike, and perhaps BJP will be in trouble in state elections too.

Such is the mood of electorate vis-a-vis BJP. Yeddy must be smiling – his job is well done – Sonia will be pleased and perhaps CBI will go slow on him now!!

  11. sanjay Says:

oh lol. When Maun Mohan Singh breaks his silence these are the pearls of wisdom we get. Of course BJP has failed as an opposition party in the parliament trying to make issues out of non-issues and not taking congress to task when they should have. But MMS has been guilty of looking away when people in his party have stolen from the country with abandon. At best he has been a puppet

  12. Deepak Says:

@harkol W.r.t the ULB poll result it is interesting to note that BJP + JDS + BSR > Cong !!!

This could be a pointer for the assembly polls. If Cong fails to get 50% seats, we could have a JDS Govt supported from outside by BJP.

  13. I Repeat Says:

Fruits of NDA’s fiscal prudence played out during UPA I till the corruption scandals broke out during UPA 2 which halted the growth and reforms. <a href="“>Growth has been sliding back again to near stagnation of the economy.

  14. harkol Says:

    @Deepak:

ULB is not an indicator of true strengths. Even in 2007, BJP didn’t do too well, but did very well a year later in assembly elections.

JD(S) won’t hesitate to go with BJP is proven before, but only if BJP supports JD(S) forming govt. Where as JD(S) will be more comfortable supporting a govt. with Congress or a coalition with Congress. JD(S) won’t support BJP.

So, It is most likely to be the other way around. JD(S)-Congress doing hybrid ‘waltz’ & ‘break dance’ of some kind. Between Congress & JD(S) they most probably will have enough seats to form a govt.

Neverthless what JD(S) & BJP prove in Karnataka is indeed that Congress has become a weak force in Karnataka. There is indeed a larger Anti-congress base in Karnataka, but congress still gets the highest vote share in elections.

BJP messed it up in Karnataka. They had excellent opportunity to make a long term bastion in Karnataka by giving decent governance. Instead they focused on looting Karnataka.

  15. Simple Says:

Stastitics tell all. UPA has beaten NDA in all areas, GDP, foreign reserves, agrioculture, industry, virtually everything! Anita is lying her mouth off by saying NDA registered 9% growth. Which rock is she under? NDA did nothing in its 6 years and yet they had the temerity to spend on India Shining campaign. Under UPA, India is actually shining, outdoing NDA by miles, yet they don’t have the shrewdness to propagate this!

  16. harkol Says:

    Grullo:

  17. Sanjeeva Says:

@ Simple, UPA has beaten NDA in all areas. Are corruptions and scams included in that?

  18. harkol Says:

For those who felt my previous post was greek/latin and are interested to figure it out, an easy way would be – translate.google.com

  19. Parijataka Says:

Well, what is wrong in calling MMS as night watchman – isn’t that what he is until Rahul Gandhi/Priyanka Vadra/Robert Vadra take over the reins of Congress party. Sad to see an organization that had great men like Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Nehru, Patel, Maulana Azad and many more reduced to party of ND Tiwari, AM Singhvi, Digvijay Singh, etc.
